Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amphibia and Reptilia of Colorado Comparatively little has been published concerning the reptiles and amphibians of Colorado. The limited literature consists of records of species scattered through a number of publications, some of which are inaccessible to the general public. Considerable unre corded material having accumulated, it seems opportune to publish this present report in order to place in the hands of naturalists and the general public such information as we have, bringing together into compact form the records heretofore published, and adding to them the unpublished material, so far as the same has come to our attention. Environmental Conditions. - Colorado has an area of about square miles, a latitudinal extent of about 276 miles and a longitudinal extent of about 375 miles. It is traversed from north to south, irregularly, by the continental divide - the backbone of the conti nent - its waters draining into two oceans. Its rock formations represent all the geological systems except possibly the Silurian. Though its average altitude is only approximately feet, it varies in altitude from less than feet to over feet above sea level, with consequent differences in climatic and other environmental conditions. The mean annual rainfall varies in a general way with altitude and topography, from less than 10 inches to 30 inches or more. Data as to temperatures in the larger and higher masses of mountains are as yet very meager, but it may be said that the temperature at elevations of from to feet drops to a point below freezing nightly even in summer time, while the mean temperature for the warmest months in some of the lower portions of the state is nearly eighty degrees. On the whole, the state is a cool one. The diurnal range of temperature is great over the entire state. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It was possible to diagnose practically all the recent genera; and this has been especially done in the Anura, in order to show how in an otherwise very homogeneous group almost any part of the body, internal or external, can be modified in kaleidoscopic variety. The same could not be done with the Reptilia. Their principal groups, - called sub-classes in the present work, in order to emphasise their taxonomic importance in comparison with the main groups of Birds and Mammals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Amphibians and the Reptiles Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own Opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reptiles, Amphibia, Fishes and Lower Chordata Having conceived the plan of recording, at any rate in broad outline, the history of the vertebrates from the evolutionist's point of View, I allotted to myself, as many already know, the task of writing the volume on Birds, and proposed to edit the remaining volumes. Rather than attempt to write them. And this because the day is now past when any single writer can hope to achieve such a task with even tolerable success, for this is the day of specialists. As a consequence, for the first time in the annals of natural history, the complete life-story of the reptiles, amphibia, and fishes, and those primitive creatures which lie at the foundations, so to 'speak, Of the great house of the vertebrates, is told as only specialists can tell it. The very existence of these primitive ani mals is unsuspected by most of us, but, as Professor Arthur Thomson shows, they present us with some most interesting and most important problems. The student of sociology will find in his chapters, no less than in those concerning more familiar creatures, much food for reflection bearing on the subjects of adaptation to environment, degeneration, and so on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Reptiles and Amphibians of Ohio The tadpoles or young of frogs, and probably also of salamanders live almost, or entirely, upon vegetable matter. However, in some cases they are said to have eaten decomposing animal matter, and even other tad poles. Prof. Baird states that this may be taken advantage of to clean skeletons by placing the two together in water. The larval Rana sylvatica he found to be the most effective, as these devoured the macerated flesh, leaving a ligamentous skeleton. Their food primarily is vegetable, and it is probable that they never attack their own Species unless driven by hunger or after they have attained a good degree of development.
