Book Synopsis The Last Cavalry Sword by : Anthony C. Burke
Download or read book The Last Cavalry Sword written by Anthony C. Burke and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the last sword ever designed by a major power for its army to use as a weapon, not as an article of a dress uniform. The sword was the U.S. Model 1913 Cavalry Saber; the designer was George S. Patton, then a lieutenant on the staff of the Army chief of staff. Patton participated in the modern pentathlon in Stockholm in 1912, which included fencing, coming fifth overall. No one in the U.S. Army could be better suited, therefore, to design its last major edged weapon. The Last Sword provides an illustrated overview of the history of cavalry swords and their employment on the battlefield from the end of the Renaissance, through the Napoleonic Era, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, culminating with the Patton cavalry saber, and includes descriptions of a number of the more famous cavalry charges. Patton’s unswerving belief in the value of horse-mounted cavalry, and in the value of those troopers and officers being equipped with the sword he designed, is described using his own words. He continued to advocate horse-mounted cavalry right up to the start of the Second World War. Though mechanized squadrons replaced the conventional cavalry, it was not quite the end of Patton’s sword as some Model 1913 Cavalry Sabers were converted to fighting knives carried by GIs during the war. The book is fully illustrated with images from the collections of the Smithsonian Institution Museum of American History, the Library of Congress, the General George S. Patton Museum, the National Museum of the U.S. Army, the Connecticut Historical Society, and from private collections, most of which have never been published before.

Book Synopsis From Under Iron Eyelids by : Thomas K. Tate
Download or read book From Under Iron Eyelids written by Thomas K. Tate and published by Author House. This book was released on 2005-05-11 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular belief the Minie ball was not used by either side during America’s Civil War. Instead infantry soldiers fired the Harpers Ferry bullet, a hollow based, cylindro-conical bullet designed by acting master armorer James Henry Burton. His reward was to be driven from his position by partisan politics and into the lap of Great Britain where he helped to establish the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. Based heavily on Burton’s own papers, this book explains the problems and solutions to the armory production of small arms. A complete inventory of machine tools used to manufacture the Springfield rifled musket is listed in an appendix along with details and diagrams of three patents awarded to Burton.

Download or read book Chicopee written by Michele Plourde-Barker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the town's incorporation, Chicopee traces the history of this Western Massachusetts community from its first settlement in the 1660s to the growth spurt of the post-World War II era. Much of the community's early built environment changed during Chicopee's transformation from town to city, and this fascinating new book reveals the lost elements of the landscape. From covered bridges over the Chicopee and Connecticut Rivers to early farms, readers will see much that has disappeared from Chicopee over time. The 200 vintage images displayed in this volume depict lost schools and churches, local businesses, shops, and factories, as well as the factory workers, entrepreneurs, farmers, recent immigrants, and other townspeople who populated these institutions. Longtime residents will find that the book conjures up many memories, and newer ones will see Chicopee as they've never seen it before.
