Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ames Demonstrations in Perception: A Guide to Their Construction and Use In this volume I have attempted to present some of the more im portant demonstrations in perception that have been developed by Adelbert Ames, Jr initially with the Dartmouth Eye Institute and later with the Institute for Associated Research at Hanover, New Hamp shire. Taken together, these demonstrations have over a period of time acquired for themselves a name, the Ames demonstrations; a name that is emphatically rejected by Ames himself, who insists on the coopera tive nature of the endeavor that produced them and generously over emphasizes the contributions of his coworkers. Nevertheless, the Ames demonstrations would not exist except for the unique combination of creative imagination and technical ingenuity of the man from whom they derive their name. Taken as a whole, the demonstrations make it possible to observe perceptual phenomena ranging from the simplest visual experiences to extremely complex situations involving action. It is increasingly be ing recognized that they offer a coherent and comprehensive series of observations of importance to psychology, psychiatry, philosophy, edu cation, art and architecture, and related fields. Increased use of the demonstrations in research and educational centers has been accompanied by increased demand for details of their construction and Operation. Although there are several manuscripts and publications describing one or more of the demonstrations, as yet there is no available source in which all the demonstrations are described or even listed and in which detailed information is presented from which they Can be constructed. The purpose of the present work is to fill this gap. With this end in View, each demonstration is treated separately as a physical piece of laboratory equipment, with the following information provided. Book excerpt: Handbook of Perception, Volume I: Historical and Philosophical Roots of Perception aims to bring together essential aspects of the very large, diverse, and widely scattered literature on human perception and to give a précis of the state of knowledge in every area of perception. This volume deals with the fundamentals of perceptual systems. The book begins with some philosophical problems of perception, of sense experience, of epistemology, and some questions on the philosophy of mind. It also considers the perceptual structure, association, attention, cognition and knowledge, consciousness and action. There are also chapters emphasizing several contemporary views of perception. Psychologists, biologists, and those interested in the study of human perception will find a book a good reference material.

Book excerpt: Because of the ease with which we perceive, many people see perception as something that "just happens." However, even seemingly simple perceptual experiences involve complex underlying mechanisms, which are often hidden from our conscious experience. These mechanisms are being investigated by researchers and theorists in fields such as psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, and philosophy. A few examples of the questions posed by these investigations are, What do infants perceive? How does perception develop? What do perceptual disorders reveal about normal functioning? How can information from one sense, such as hearing, be affected by information from another sense, such as vision? How is the information from all of our senses combined to result in our perception of a coherent environment? What are some practical outcomes of basic research in perception? These are just a few of the questions this encyclopedia will consider, as it presents a comprehensive overview of the field of perception for students, researchers, and professionals in psychology, the cognitive sciences, neuroscience, and related medical disciplines such as neurology and ophthalmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In attempting to understand and explain various behaviour, events, and phenomena in their field, psychologists have developed and enunciated an enormous number of 'best guesses' or theories concerning the phenomenon in question. Such theories involve speculations and statements that range on a potency continuum from 'strong' to 'weak'. The term theory, itself, has been conceived of in various ways in the psychological literature. In the present dictionary, the strategy of lumping together all the various traditional descriptive labels regarding psychologists 'best guesses' under the single descriptive term theory has been adopted. The descriptive labels of principle, law, theory, model, paradigm, effect, hypothesis and doctrine are attached to many of the entries, and all such descriptive labels are subsumed under the umbrella term theory. The title of this dictionary emphasizes the term theory (implying both strong and weak best guesses) and is a way of indication, overall, the contents of this comprehensive dictionary in a parsimonious and felicitous fashion. The dictionary will contain approximately 2,000 terms covering the origination, development, and evolution of various psychological concepts, as well as the historical definition, analysis, and criticisms of psychological concepts. Terms and definitions are in English.*Contains over 2,000 terms covering the origination, development and evolution of various psychological concepts*Covers a wide span of theories, from auditory, cognitive tactile and visual to humor and imagery*An essential resource for psychologists needing a single-source quick reference

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the quality and accessibility of computer graphics has provided new pictorial displays and the tools with which to control them. These new display technologies have focused interest on how to design the static and dynamic images they produce to ensure effective communication. This book, based on the conference on Spatial Displays and Spatial instruments held at the Asilomar Conference Centre in 1987, focuses on the geometry of this communication. It is intended to be a source book of theoretical analysis, experimental demonstrations and practical examples from a range of contributors interested in pictorial communication, from medical artists to astronauts. The book offers the theoretical background and practical guidance needed by designers of contemporary 2D and 3D graphical computer interfaces. Its major contribution lies in its outlining of the elements of human perception and motor control which underlie the geometric design of head-mounted graphics for virtual reality displays.
