Download or read book Seward's Folly written by Lee A. Farrow and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Purchase—denounced at the time as “Seward’s Folly” but now seen as a masterstroke—is well known in American history. But few know the rest of the story. This book aims to correct that. Lee Farrow offers here a detailed account of just what the Alaska Purchase was, how it came about, its impact at the time, and more. Farrow shows why both America and Russia had plenty of good reasons to want the sale to occur, including Russia’s desire to let go of an unprofitable, hard-to-manage colony and the belief in the United States that securing Alaska could help the nation gain control of British Columbia and generate closer trade ties with Asia . Farrow also delves into the implications of the deal for foreign policy and international diplomacy far beyond Russia and the United States at a moment when the global balance of power was in question. A thorough, readable retelling of a story we only think we know, Seward’s Folly will become the standard book on the Alaska Purchase.

Download or read book The Alaska Purchase in American History written by David K. Fremon and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late on the night of March 29, 1867, Secretary of State William Seward met a Russian statesman to conclude an agreement they had been discussing, that the United States would buy the vast territory of Alaska from Russia. By 4:00 A.M. the next day, they had settled the terms of the sale. Then Seward had to convince Congress, and the American people, that the Alaska Territory was worth the price of 7.2 million dollars. Author David K. Fremon traces the exploration, settlement, and development of Alaska under the Russian government, and shows how the land deal that is often called Seward's Folly was, in fact, one of the best bargains in history.

Book excerpt: A compact, fast-moving social and political history that brings to vivid life the story of Alaska's early days. Its name was not Alaska until we bought it in 1867. Until then it was Russian America. Americans at large are apt to forget that our 49th state, Alaska, was first explored and settled by the Russians. They left a definite mark on the vast Northwest. -- Amazon.

Book Synopsis Russians in Alaska, 1732-1867 by : Lydia Black
Download or read book Russians in Alaska, 1732-1867 written by Lydia Black and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive work, the crown jewel in the distinguished career of Russian America scholar Lydia T. Black, presents a comprehensive overview of the Russian presence in Alaska. Drawing on extensive archival research and employing documents only recently made available to scholars, Black shows how Russian expansion was the culmination of centuries of social and economic change. Black s work challenges the standard perspective on the Russian period in Alaska as a time of unbridled exploitation of Native inhabitants and natural resources. Without glossing over the harsher aspects of the period, Black acknowledges the complexity of relations between Russians and Native peoples. She chronicles the lives of ordinary men and women the merchants and naval officers, laborers and clergy who established Russian outposts in Alaska. These early colonists carried with them the Orthodox faith and the Russian language; their legacy endures in architecture and place names from Baranof Island to the Pribilofs. This deluxe volume features fold-out maps and color illustrations of rare paintings and sketches from Russian, American, Japanese, and European sources many have never before been published. An invaluable source for historians and anthropologists, this accessible volume brings to life a dynamic period in Russian and Alaskan history. A tribute to Black s life as a scholar and educator, "Russians in Alaska" will become a classic in the field."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alaska-Canada Boundary Dispute, Under the Anglo-Russian Treaty of 1825, the Russian-American Alaska Treaty of 1867, and the Anglo-American Convention of 1892, 1894 and 1897: An Historical and Legal Review One or the other of two national neighbours claims that their boundary line should be defined or rectified. If this is questioned, a season of diplomatic untruthfulness and finesse sometimes inter venes, for the sake of appearances. Developments soon follow, how ever, that expose a grim determination. Behind fine phrases of diplomacy, and in the end the weaker nation frequently awakens to the fact that it must either accede to an ultimatum dictated by its stronger adversary, or look in the face of a despoliation of its terri tory; and, if such a stage is reached. Superior strength and fighting ability, instead of suggesting magnanimity. Are graspingly used to enforce extreme demands. If not to consumate extensive spoliation. Download or read book Alaska written by Claus M. Naske and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest by far of the fifty states, Alaska is also the state of greatest mystery and diversity. And, as Claus-M. Naske and Herman E. Slotnick show in this comprehensive survey, the history of Alaska’s peoples and the development of its economy have matched the diversity of its land- and seascapes. Alaska: A History begins by examining the region’s geography and the Native peoples who inhabited it for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. The Russians claimed northern North America by right of discovery in 1741. During their occupation of “Russian America” the region was little more than an outpost for fur hunters and traders. When the czar sold the territory to the United States in 1867, nobody knew what to do with “Seward’s Folly.” Mainland America paid little attention to the new acquisition until a rush of gold seekers flooded into the Yukon Territory. In 1906 Congress granted Alaska Territory a voteless delegate and in 1912 gave it a territorial legislature. Not until 1959, however, was Alaska’s long-sought goal of statehood realized. During World War II, Alaska’s place along the great circle route from the United States to Asia firmly established its military importance, which was underscored during the Cold War. The developing military garrison brought federal money and many new residents. Then the discovery of huge oil and natural-gas deposits gave a measure of economic security to the state. Alaska: A History provides a full chronological survey of the region’s and state’s history, including the precedent-setting Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, which compensated Native Americans for their losses; the effect of the oil industry and the trans-Alaska pipeline on the economy; the Exxon Valdez oil spill; and Alaska politics through the early 2000s.
