Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) or tissue types are the products of a rapidly developing field of knowledge within the last 20 years. In the early stages of the research many investigators suspected the existence of a complex series of transplantation antigens, but it was widely believed that these antigens would not be well-defined even in this century. Yet in the last two decades as many as 124 different HLA antigens determined by at least 7 very closely linked genes located on the short arm of chromosome 6 have been identified and subsequently agreed upon by an international nomenclature committee. 1 Extensive international collaboration fueled by the potential clinical application of these antigens to clinical transplantation has advanced the field rapidly. There were nine inter national histocompatibility workshops held during this period. Although iden tification of HLA antigens was of primary clinical importance in transplantation 2 and of great basic interest in human genetics and anthropology, a rather un expected bonus has been the determination that HLA antigens are associated with disease susceptibility to a greater extent than any other known genetic marker in man. In the past, many genetic polymorphisms have been suspected to be associated with diseases. The most extensively studied markers are blood groups, enzymes, and serum proteins. A comprehensive account of published studies, totalling approximately 1,000, of these markers is available in a book by Mourant et al.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured to be a companion to the recently published Handbook of Transfusion Medicine, the Handbook of Pediatric Transfusion Medicine is dedicated to pediatric hematology-oncology and transfusion medicine, a field which remains ambiguous and which has generated few comprehensive texts. This book stands alone as one of the few texts that addresses transfusion issues specific to pediatric medicine. Written in an eminently readable style, this authoritative handbook is a requirement for any pediatric physician or caregiver. - Neonatal and fetal immune response and in utero development issues - Blood compatability and pre-transfusion testing issues specific to pediatric and neonatal transfusion - Therapeutic apheresis including red blood cell exchange and prophylactic chronic erythrocytapheresis for sickle cell patients - Also includes a section that concentrates on the consent, quality and legal issues of blood transfusion and donation

Book Synopsis Immunology of Human Papillomaviruses by : M.A. Stanley
Download or read book Immunology of Human Papillomaviruses written by M.A. Stanley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a series of papers presented at the Second International Workshop on HPV Immunology held at the University of Cambridge July 5-7 1993. This Workshop and its predecessor held in Amsterdam in May 1992 were two of the major activities of the European Concerted Action "Immunology of Human Papillomavirus and Vaccine Development". The Concerted Action (CA) was supported by grants from the Commission of the European Communities (EC), the French Association for Cancer Research (ARC) and the European Association for Medical Research (EAMR). Twenty two laboratories throughout Europe and Scandinavia were members of the CA, the objectives of which were to develop collaborations, implement scientific exchanges and co-operate in a collective effort to develop vaccination strategies for HPV. HPV's are ubiquitous pathogens and evidence which has been accumulated over the past decade leaves little doubt that infection with certain HPV types (the so called "oncogenic HPV's" 16, 18 and their relatives) is the major risk factor in the development of cancer of the uterine cervix in women. Since an infectious agent, a virus, is implicated as the main aetiologic factor in this disease, the possibility is raised that if one could prevent HPV infection or treat established infections this would be an effective anti-cancer strategy against what is the commonest cancer in women worldwide.
Book Synopsis Minor Histocompatibility Antigens by : Derry Roopenian
Download or read book Minor Histocompatibility Antigens written by Derry Roopenian and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the widespread application of solid tissue and bone marrow transplantation as a treatment for an array of life threatening disorders, there is a pressing need for clinicians and experimentalists to understand the basis of immunological rejection of tissue transplants. While much previous work focuses on characterization of antigens encoded by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in this process, the many histocompatibility (H) antigens encoded outside of the MHC, the so-called minor H antigens, have only recently been identified at the molecular level. This easily readable but comprehensive text is the first to put together insightful historic perspectives with up-to-date advances in the molecular genetics, biochemistry and immunobiology of minor H antigens from both experimental and clinical points of view. In doing so it provides a sourcebook particularly suited for clinicians and experimental immunologists engaged in tissue transplantation. The text recounts the progress being made on many fronts. Newer approaches have extracted molecular explanations finally allowing one to ascribe a rational molecular basis to minor H minor antigens both in rodents and humans. This understanding also paves the way to apply new genomic analyses to the problem of tissue transplantation.
