He was descended from an honorable line of Puritan ancestors, and in his life he was a true representative of their enterprise, integrity of character, and Christian benevolence. At the age Of eighteen he went South, where his active business life was spent. He was successful. At the close of the war he came North, leaving his business wholly in the hands of his business partner, Mr. G. W. Williams, who had protected the property against an attempt in the courts to confiscate it, and who in 1886 came North, and rendered to Mr. Hand his full share, amounting to nearly half a million dollars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Missionary, 1884, Vol. 38 I will not waste time upon an introduction. I will only say that I am glad to be among you glad that you are interested in the Chinese work, with which we have been connected so many years in California. We feel that we are greatly privileged in having these dark souls within our reach. We can obey our Saviour's last command, Disciple all nations, without having to go far from our homes and native land. They are with us and we have but to open our hearts and our churches to them and they will come in. They are coming in not in large numbers but one by one. In the church of which my husband has been the pastor for nearly ten years there are over seventy Chinese members - about one third of our whole membership. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Missionary, 1891, Vol. 45 The Annual Conference of the Board of Indian Commissioners with the representatives of the various religious bodies having charge of Indian Missions was held in the parlors of the Riggs House, January 8th. The pres ence of Senator Dawes, Representative Cutcheon, and other distinguished persons, gave weight to the deliberations, and special interest was added to the meeting by the troubles now prevailing in the Dakotas among the Sioux Indians. Commissioner Morgan, Captain Pratt of the Carlisle School, General Armstrong of Hampton, and the Secretaries of the Missionary Societies presented an array of facts and of recent information that gave a more favorable aspect to the situation than is generally entertained. The disturbance among the Indians is confined to at most among the and strong hopes are entertained that serious bloodshed may be avoided. And yet, so great rs the uncertainty hanging over this matter, that before these lines reach our readers, the daily press may give sad news of battle and disaster. The discussions of the Conference were ended with a series of resolu tions, the purport of which may thus be summed up The Dakota trouble is confined to a small number of Indians, and is due to the inevitable opposi tion of the chiefs and anti-progressive elements among the masses of the Indians. The removal of experienced Indian Agents for political reasons was deprecated, and the importance of permanence in the lines of policy pursued in the educational and Christianizing in uences was emphasized. Larger appropriations by the Government to establish an adequate system of common-school education, until every Indian child is enabled to attend school, compulsory education and the continued support to contract schools, and additional facilities for securing lands in severalty to the In dians, were endorsed. The decision which it was understood the Government had made, not to transfer the care of the Indians to the War Department, was warmly approbated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Missionary, 1887, Vol. 41 The american missionary wishes all its readers and friends a Happy New Year. The memory of the old year makes this salutation a hearty one. God has blessed our work in a signal manner both at the North and at the South. Our appeals have been heard and have met with generous responses. The religious press has rendered us most valuable aid. Friends have interested friends in our behalf. The debt has been almost wiped out. The year of 1886 stands conspicuous in its attestation. Of the favor God has given the Association in the eyes of the churches. Our greeting, therefore, is not merely formal. We have Occasion to be grateful. Will our friends then please be assured of our gratitude, as entering upon the work of 1887 we wish for them, one and all, a Happy New Year. This is the time to make resolutions. Good resolutions now formed and faithfully carried out will be certain to make the new year a happy one. We would suggest that the resolutions passed at the National Coun cil at Chicago and adopted as its own by our annual meeting at New Haven, asking for from the churches this year for our work, be approved by every reader of the missionary, with this One added, Re solved, that I will do my part as an individual to make these resolutions effectual. If this resolution is heartily adopted and lived up to, then cer tain results 'will follow: (1) The sixty per cent. Increase upon the contri butions of last year, that the amount called for necessitates, will be secured. (2) A larger number Of churches will be found among those contributing to the A. M. A. Than has ever yet been recorded. (3) Special appeals will not be heard. (4) Demanded enlargement of work at a number of points will be made, and new fields entered. (5) Our missionaries will be made happy in the knowledge that their work is to be sustained. We feel that we can ask God's blessing upon all who thus resolve with an assurance of faith that the blessing will be bestowed where the resolution is kept. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Missionary, Vol. 40: January, 1886 The region was so destitute, the property so valuable and the promised support so liberal, that our Executive Committee accepted the gift. Rev. J. H. Parr, of Chicago, who had been in our work the previous year, in Austin, Texas, was appointed principal, and three of our tried and efficient lady teachers were selected as his assistants. Rev. Mr. Parr went to Quitman, in August, to take the first steps in getting ready. A committee of citizens met him with the information that, owing to the location of the hotel in the very heart of the town, the feeling of the people was such that its use as a school had better not be under taken. There is a cotton factory in the suburbs of the town which for some time has been idle, located where there would be no objection to a colored school, and these gentlemen proposed to purchase it and offer it with twelve acres of land in exchange for the hotel. Accepting the judg ment of that committee that the exchange would be equitable, and only desiring to do what was best and wisest, with Mrs. Allen's full consent, we accepted the proposition and requested the committee to have the ex change made as quickly as possible, so that we could at once set about getting ready for Opening the school. Pending the negotiations, some other parties purchased the factory and so the scheme fell through. We were assured by prominent citizens that we had done everything that we could be reasonably or honorably expected to do, and that the citizens of Quit man could never make just complaint against the American Missionary Association. With such an assurance there was nothing left for us but to go forward. Mr. Parr, with this strong backing, took hold earnestly. Nevertheless he found himself subjected to insults and petty annoyances. He received anonymous and threatening letters. He was warned to de sist. The gates were carried away. Bullets were fired at his window one night when he was about to retire. The Mayor offered a reward for the apprehension and conviction of the criminals who had stolen the gates and fired the shots. Then the parties who had purchased the factory came forward and informed us that if we would give them the hotel and additional they would make the exchange. Subsequently another propo sition to give us ten acres of land and in exchange was received. This was far below the value of our property, and the location of the land was objectionable, lying between a cemetery and a swamp. These propo sitions, even if equitable, on account of the heavy debt upon our treasury we could not accept. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Mission Monthly, Vol. 33: May, 1919 Many Mexicans born within the United States, living under its flag and protected by its laws, are no part of the body politic and have no real conception of American ideals. An elderly business man living in the capital of New Mexico when asked why Santa Fe was so much an alien city said, What would we gain by adopting your American civilization? He then broke out into a bitter tirade against the United States for their treatment of Porto Rico and the Philippines. Our crime evidently was that we had shaken them out of the lethargy of ages and turned their eyes toward the new day.
