Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of Great Britain as a world power was the result of long-term economic change and two world wars. Except in a few areas, American authorities did not set out to supplant Britain: indeed until the Second World War they were hesitant about the use of power. But when they embraced it, a variety of factors ensured that it was Britain's place that was taken. This book offers an authoritative analysis of the stages of displacement and the complex feelings aroused by the process on both sides of the Atlantic. As such it describes a transfer of power which will surely be seen as one of the most fundamentally important events of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Walter Gropius associated standardisation with promoting civilisation in 1935, yet Andrew Carnegie’s influence on the proliferation of pattern book public library plans internationally predated these observations by 50 years. Through the first twenty years of his programme, he supported the erection of almost three thousand public buildings across Britain and America. Though better acknowledged in the US than the UK, this philanthropic contribution radically extended the scope of public provision and remains incomparable in its scale and scope in both nations. Frequently engraved with the self-deifying slogan Let there be Light , open access to navigate these new interior public spaces after work coincided with the first provision of electric light. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, professional groups had sought to specify minimum standards of natural light and air for schools and hospitals. However, the commercial quantification of electricity accelerated the development of a readily comparable vocabulary to prescribe adequate quantities of light for all tasks regardless of their location or orientation. Seeking to gauge the extent of universal values, this book concentrates on the design and performance of a handful of early Carnegie library buildings in Britain and America, identifying their response to contemporary design theory, but also by contrast to their respective local environmental contexts. It examines whether their standards of provision were equitable and if these privately financed public buildings were the first roots of generically standardised public environments to be shared transatlantically. The book also argues that the public library building type can provide a datum for acknowledging the twentieth century legacy of shared international environmental standards for public spaces more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Invasion All careers are said to be overcrowded. I do not believe it. If there are more workers, there is more work to do. If there are more earners there is more money to earn and more opportunities to earn it. These Opportunities grow with the increase of population throughout the Empire. No power can prevent the young, educated man from achieving some kind of success, but persistent work and effort are essential. The young must learn, and the middle-aged and old must encourage and help them, must have open minds, receptive to new ideas and to the spirit of the age - Progress. Improvements must be fearlessly carried out; individual enterprise assisted. All our advantages, natural, physical, mental, political and commercial must be thoroughly utilised. All our weaknesses and errors fearlessly discussed, and corrected. On these lines only can the American Invasion be triumphantly defeated, and England's commercial and industrial position maintained.
