Book excerpt: The book's central focus explores several "myths" associated with American entrepreneurship: the idea that small business owners are "job creators"; that entrepreneurs are the "backbone" or "engine" of the economy; that entrepreneurship provides a path of economic mobility for immigrants, ethnic and racial minorities, and women; that the Horatio Algiers "rags to riches" story is possible for anyone willing to work hard. Instead, I provide a critical perspective that challenges these myths of American enterprise, arguing that successful entrepreneurship requires access to social and economic capital resources and support that are often distributed along the lines of race, class, and gender in the highly stratified American economy and society.

Few studies have examined how immigrant entrepreneurs contribute to total U.S. business ownership, formation, and income. This book examines the contributions of immigrant business owners and their businesses to the U.S. economy. The role of immigrants in high-tech entrepreneurship in the U.S. is also quantified. Among other findings, it was determined that nearly 1.5 million immigrant business owners in the U.S. represent 12.5 percent of all business owners. Moreover, the total business income generated by immigrant business owners is $67 billion, 11.6 percent of all business income in the U.S. In addition, although business owners from Mexico constitute the largest share of immigrant business owners, immigrants from around the world are sources of U.S. business formation, ownership and income. These findings indicate that immigrants make large and important contributions to business ownership, formation, and income in the U.S., particularly in some states and economic sectors. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

From the techies who created icons of the new economy-Intel, Google, eBay and Sun Microsystems-to the young engineers tinkering with solar power and next-generation car batteries, immigrants have proven themselves to be America's competitive advantage. With a focus on legal immigrants and their odyssey from homeland to start-up, this unique book Explores the psyche, cultural nuances, skills, and business strategies that help immigrants achieve remarkable success Explains how immigrants will create the American jobs of the future-if we let them Whether you are a CEO, a civic leader, or an entrepreneur yourself, Immigrant, Inc. warns of the peril of anti-immigrant attitudes and a hostile immigration process. It also explains how any American can tap their "inner immigrant" to transform their lives and their companies. Written by an immigration lawyer who represents immigrant entrepreneurs and a journalist who specializes in international culture, the authors have a front-row seat to this phenomenon, offering a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of the most persistent entrepreneurs of the era.

What is the true price she must pay to remain in the United States? JULISSA ARCE knows firsthand that the most common, preconceived answers to those questions are sometimes far too simple-and often just plain wrong. On the surface, Arce's story reads like a how-to manual for achieving the American dream: growing up in an apartment on the outskirts of San Antonio, she worked tirelessly, achieved academic excellence, and landed a coveted job on Wall Street, complete with a six-figure salary. The level of professional and financial success that she achieved was the very definition of the American dream. But in this brave new memoir, Arce digs deep to reveal the physical, financial, and emotional costs of the stunning secret that she, like many other high-achieving, successful individuals in the United States, had been forced to keep not only from her bosses, but even from her closest friends. From the time she was brought to this country by her hardworking parents as a child, Arce-the scholarship winner, the honors college graduate, the young woman who climbed the ladder to become a vice president at Goldman Sachs-had secretly lived as an undocumented immigrant. In this surprising, at times heart-wrenching, but always inspirational personal story of struggle, grief, and ultimate redemption, Arce takes readers deep into the little-understood world of a generation of undocumented immigrants in the United States today- people who live next door, sit in your classrooms, work in the same office, and may very well be your boss. By opening up about the story of her successes, her heartbreaks, and her long-fought journey to emerge from the shadows and become an American citizen, Arce shows us the true cost of achieving the American dream-from the perspective of a woman who had to scale unseen and unimaginable walls to get there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IS THE AMERICAN DREAM STILL ALIVE? Bob Russell wrote this book to celebrate our free market economy and to honor those who have achieved The American Dream. This book includes the inspirational life stories of 17 of his friends who achieved their dreams and financial independence through owning a small business. These life stories are the pride and hope of America. The hardships and difficulties that some people had to overcome in order to become successful is amazing. These entrepreneurs had the vision, determination and intelligence to succeed and provide products or services which created jobs. This free market competition results in improved products or services and reduced prices, thus improving all our lives. Everyone seems to have their own idea of exactly what The American Dream is, but most believe it is the ability to achieve their goals and do as well or better financially than their parents. There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether The American Dream is dead or achievable. In this book, the author shows that The Dream is not dead even though government regulations and taxes have made it more difficult to achieve. Russell feels that by turning the free market loose our national economy will expand resulting in more people realizing The American Dream. "...a consummate account of entrepreneurial financial success obtained through free market capitalism. ...a remarkable gallery of seventeen life stories-heroic, tragic, moving... The American Dream is a tribute to the spirit of entrepreneurial success and is highly recommended to interested readers." -Robert J. Smat, M.S., Ph.D., Organic Research Chemist and Patent Agent, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. (retired) "Bob Russell reminds us that the great American success story has been achieved by many families. ...it is worthwhile to read, as it is a reflection of American culture." -Gary W. Rodgers Ph.D, Professor, Florida Southwestern State College Colorado State University-Global Campus "Bob Russell"s book is a resounding endorsement of free market capitalism as told through 17 life stories of entrepreneurs who have achieved significant financial success. This book will no doubt give readers confirmation that free market capitalism. ...is the supreme economic system..." -Tim Allen, Ph.D., CCIM, Professor, Eminent Scholar and Alico Chair in Finance Lutgert College of Business, Florida Gulf Coast University

Book excerpt: WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM? Is opportunity still available for those who work hard and play by the rules? Guardians of the Dream offers an inspiring view of our nation's promise, which for the past two centuries has been championed by the legion of America's immigrants. Paul Hsu, a business leader and entrepreneur who has built several successful companies, counters the negative narratives by recalling his own journey and those of others who have found the path to opportunity in a country that is like no other. Born in Taiwan, Hsu came to the United States as a young man and found a land where anything was possible. He writes movingly of his family's experience, recalling that "our lives were often hard, but we didn't feel put upon. We didn't think our struggle was unfair, because my wife and I knew that it was only one step along the road. It took some time, but we succeeded. We had a belief that America had great opportunities and that if we made sacrifices and stayed

Book excerpt: IS THE AMERICAN DREAM STILL ALIVE? THE STORIES IN THIS BOOK OFFER A RESOUNDING "YES!" This collection of interviews with 50 successful immigrant entrepreneurs from all over the world provides proof that the American dream is not only alive and well, but thriving. Furthermore, these stories show the great wealth - financial and cultural - that immigrants can offer the United States. This country was founded by immigrants who set off to make a better life for themselves. Similarly, many of these innovators left behind war-torn countries, failing economies, and political unrest to find financial and personal security for themselves and their families. Along with them, they brought the wisdom and insight of their cultures, the sobriety of their perspectives on life, and an unending passion for innovation and hard-work. On top of almost unanimously coming to the country without speaking the language, these enterprising business owners were jailed, took bullets, and overcame incurable diseases, all on their journey to becoming successful entrepreneurs. They hail from Mexico, Russia, Somalia, Afghanistan, China, Argentina, Lebanon, France, India, Kenya, Haiti, and several other countries, and they represent a wide swath of industries including healthcare, finance, cosmetics, fashion, food & beverage, technology and more. Whether you're in need of motivation to start your own business, or you're wondering if the US is still a great place to do business, you'll find this book full of actionable and inspiring advice that will help save you time and money on your path to becoming an entrepreneur in America.
