Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Biographical Sketch Book Andrew fuller once remarked that he would rather be like the moon, which, although full of spots and imperfections, lends a useful light to men, than a meteor, with its dazzling but transient glare, exciting only the wonder of mankind. It was in the spirit of this sentiment that we compiled the following pages, embracing brief sketches, for the most part, of the lives of men who, by unwearied perseverance, have triumphed over difficulties. Born in an humble sphere, which precluded the advantages of a liberal education, we resolved, that although unable to write a learned work, we would attempt to produce a useful one. Hence, the fastidious critic who shall search for faults, will be rewarded with an abundant harvest. If, however, this volume shall serve as a hint to those so well able to write a better, a valuable end will have been attained. But, in the absence of such, we flatter ourself that the biographical sketch Boox, with all its defects, will not be entirely unacceptable to a discerning public. The needle, although unpolished, may yet serve to point the way to the pole 5 and if the examples set forth shall cheer but one sufferer, and enable him to wait with patience for the bright dawning of to-morrow, the labor will not have been in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Portrait Gallery, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches It is, however, from the combination of portrait and biography that we reap the utmost degree of utility and pleasure which can be derived from them.' As, in contemplating the portrait of an eminent person, we long to be instructed in his history, so, in considering his actions, we are anxious to behold his countenance. So earnest is this desire, that the imagination is generally ready to coin a set of features, or to conceive a character, to supply the absence of one or the other. The babe grew to a child, and another friend came and kissed it. Her name was Memory. She said, Look behind thee, and tell me what thou seest. The child answered, I see a little book. Then Memory said, I will teach thee to get honey from thy book, that will be sweet to thee when thou art old. The youth became a man, and at length age found him. The old man laid down to die, and when his soul went from his body, Memory walked with it through the open gate of Heaven. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Artists of America: A Series of Biographical Sketches of American Artists; With Portraits and Designs on Steel The immediate object of this Series of Biographical Sketches, is to make Our Artists and their Works better known at home. Abroad, this is not necessary, for there they have always been better known, and better appreciated than in their own country. The names of such men as West, Allston, Durand, and Powers, are a sufficient pledge of the truth of this statement. While every American of taste, and of national feeling, is proud of Our Artists, he blushes when this fact is told. It does not reflect much credit upon us, it seems to me, to have it said, and with too much truth too, that no American Artist can get bread at home till he has won fame abroad. I have long believed that the insensibility of the nation to the claims of Art and Artists was more owing to a lack of information on these subjects, than to any, perhaps all other causes; and I have long desired to see this want supplied with some work, uniting beauty of execution and cheapness of price, with authenticity of facts, to secure for it general circulation. Artists themselves will not do it, although well qualified for the task; perhaps they could not do it without suffering, however unjustly, unkind imputations. No one else seems inclined to make an attempt, and I have resolved to try it myself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Preeminent Americans The selection of subjects was made after long and mature deliberation. With the single exception of Alexander Hamilton, they are all American by birth, and each of the varied walks of life has its representatives. A few names, chiefly belonging to the revolutionary, or pre-revolutionary period, although justly entitled to claim the honorable dis tinction of preeminent, have been reluctantly excluded, from the fact that a most diligent search has failed to 'dis cover any authentic portrait extant. The author has availed himself of every source of information possible, and has consulted authorities so numerous as to preclude detailed mention, and, at times, so varying as to call for very careful examination and comparison in order to arrive at a correct statement of facts. There has been an honest endeavor, on the part of both author and publishers, to prepare a work worthy of the confidence of the public; one that shall be of value to the student, and of interest to the general reader, whether the free institutions of the land we love be his by birthright, or whether he shall have come from a foreign shore to make them his own by adoption.
