Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a largely ridiculous coming of age adventure book set in the 1980’s. It’s sure to make you chuckle and aggravate any idly standing authority figures. I apologize in advance for any counseling you may require after reading this work. Six Florida-based buddies struggle to maintain their youthful idealism as they travel to New York to stop a local mob boss from blackmailing their friend. During their quest they are guided by a talking tree; a partially invisible spirit-like substance; a hyper-galactic, Bee-ben-bobble playing number stealer; the evil corporate Zukes, and a semi-superhero called Barley Man. After navigating a series of moral dilemmas they stand ready to fight for life, love, and a big bucket of cash. A special note for “old” people: Sometimes parents forget to take their children seriously. Whether it be their emotional stability, their ideas on spirituality, or even something as simple as their tastes in music; somehow, some way, many kids get the feeling that you’re just shrugging them off. Sad really. Perhaps we should enhance the dialogue. After all, kids have so much to say, and so much to ask.So chill out already. Sure the book contains some off-color humor and a few wacky philosophies, but hey look on the bright side, your kid is literate. Way to go parent people! Besides, how badly can it warp their brains? I think the Internet has that covered. Loosen the reigns. Let them dream a little. Who knows, you might decide to join them.

Book excerpt: God and a nuclear fuel broker meet in a sports bar to discuss women, work, and other life mysteries… What sounds like the start of a classic political joke, is actually the beginning of a thought-provoking philosophical adventure. Set against the scandalous decline of the largest, privately-held business empire in the nuclear brokerage industry, Lunches With Larry follows a young, romantically-challenged, business misfit on his crusade to find true love, lasting friendship, and the answer to the oldest of questions. If you’ve ever felt confused, lost or all alone in a world you can’t quite figure out; if you’ve ever thrown up your hands in frustration and shouted, “I just don’t understand anything anymore,” pull up chair, settle in with a spot of tea, and have a look. You may find something you’ve never lost and loose something you’ve never needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking back, I’m amazed at how much of my youth was spent in an apathetic, egocentric daze. Sure, I did things, but mostly I just thought about doing things…someday when everything was just so. It never happened, of course. There was always a monkey in the wrench of life preventing me from making real that which I saw so clearly in my mind’s eye. And so I waited as my introverted childhood was slowly and completely encapsulated by fruitless daydreams. I never fought the bully. I never even raised my voice. Adolescence was easier I guess, but only because I knew the game. As a bumbling wealth of impotent romance, I never once acted on the yearnings in my heart. I practiced lines I never tried, wrote songs I never sang, and gazed endlessly into mirrors that could do nothing more than serve a bitter slice of truth. I missed the prom. I missed the point. And I missed the boat on a number of friendships that, like so many things, are now gone forever. Two minutes too late. It’s a small saying with a big price tag. If you’ve been there – and who hasn’t? – you know what it’s like to ache for a do over, knowing full well if the wish were somehow granted it would forever change the person you’ve become. Two Minutes Two Late is a collection of stories detailing the missteps of a hapless romantic. From career blunders and criminal exploits to dating debacles to goodbyes unsaid, it reminds us that while follies happen to the best of us, the future is unwritten and ours to explore.

The characters in this, the second of an intended five part series are wholly the product of my imagination. The newspapers and features cited in this work are also fictional, any non-fictional references are cited by source. It is alleged by various and sundry criminologists that there are over thirty Russian Crime Syndicates in the United States centered in every major city including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle. As crime festers in an environment where individual freedom is suppressed, only time will tell to what extent the Russian Mafyia will influence the American lifestyle and economy.

Book excerpt: Cody shyly averted her gaze downward after hearing Lance’s seemingly unbelievable compliment to her, but somehow she knew that his azure eyes were burning straight into her with an undeniably newfound fire. As an impoverished and shy teenager, Cody finds a married doctor quite alluring, including his sexy southern drawl. However, once he leaves for Texas, his wife’s life is suddenly ripped from him during a tragic auto accident; and he never fully recovers from her untimely death. The subsequent, everlasting shock waves would ultimately follow him for the remainder of his life, while Cody eagerly joins him for the ride... Thrust from a life of poverty into a life of privilege, Cody ultimately learns that, indeed, money certainly doesn’t buy happiness; although true love can eternally persevere... Southern Bloodlines is the first novel in a two-part series that explores the explosive saga of the Dallas family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book undertakes a detailed reading of Robert Kroetsch's The Studhorse Man, examining this Canadian novel in its transnational historical and socio-cultural context. Key subject headings are biology and culture, sex and gender, eugenics and contraception, writing and reading. The overarching theme is «disenchanted modernity» in the twentieth-century, the systematic displacement of the divine and natural order by a humanly ordained social regime, and by forms of social engineering that brought to bear the full force of modern science, invasively to alter the most fundamental conditions of human life. The more immediate literary frames of reference are Greek mythology, early Christian debates on the body and marriage, and the lore of the North American Aboriginal trickster, as these are deployed and alluded to in Kroetsch's novel. In establishing the sources and contexts of The Studhorse Man, this study examines Robert Kroetsch's early drafts of the novel, and his many notes taken and clippings assembled during its composition. An effort has been made to appeal to a wide range of general and academic readers alike by avoiding specialized jargon and adopting a cross-disciplinary approach. This book will be of interest to scholars of literature and literary theory, and of use in courses on literature and the novel, on masculinity and gender studies, and on cultural history in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: **NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER** An evocative, clear-eyed, and revealing memoir by Bernie Taupin, the lyrical master and long-time collaborator of Elton John “I loved writing, I loved chronicling life and every moment I was cogent, sober, or blitzed, I was forever feeding off my surroundings, making copious notes as ammunition for future compositions. . . . The thing is good, bad, or indifferent I never stopped writing, it was as addictive as any drug.” This is the memoir music fans have been waiting for. Half of one of the greatest creative partnerships in popular music, Bernie Taupin is the man who wrote the lyrics for Elton John, who conceived the ideas that spawned countless hits, and sold millions and millions of records. Together, they were a duo, a unit, an immovable object. Their extraordinary, half-century-and-counting creative relationship has been chronicled in biopics (like 2019's Rocketman) and even John's own autobiography, Me. But Taupin, a famously private person, has kept his own account of their adventures close to his chest, until now. Written with honesty and candor, Scattershot allows the reader to witness events unfolding from Taupin's singular perspective, sometimes front and center, sometimes from the edge, yet always described vibrantly, with an infectious energy that only a vivid songwriter's prose could offer. From his childhood in the East Midlands of England whose imagination was sparked and forever informed by the distinctly American mythopoetics of country music and cowboy culture, to the glittering, star-studded fishbowl of ’70s and ’80s Beverly Hills, Scattershot is simultaneously a Tom Jones-like picaresque journey across a landscape of unforgettable characters, as well as a striking, first-hand account of a creative era like no other and one man’s experience at the core of it. An exciting, multi-decade whirlwind told in a non-linear yet grounded narrative, Scattershot whizzes around the world as we ride shotgun with Bernie on his extraordinary life. We visit Los Angeles with him and Elton on the cusp of global fame. We spend time with him in Australia almost in residency at an infamous rock 'n' roll hotel in an endless blizzard of drugs. And we spend late, late night hours with John Lennon, with Bob Marley, and hanging with Frank Sinatra. And beyond the world of popular music, we witness memorable encounters with writers like Graham Greene, painters like Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali, and scores of notable misfits, miscreants, eccentrics, and geniuses, known and unknown. Even if they're not famous in their own right, they are stars on the page, and we discover how they inspired the indelible lyrics to songs such as “Tiny Dancer,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and The Jets,” and so many more. Unique and utterly compelling, Scattershot will transport the reader across the decades and around the globe, along the way meeting some of the greatest creative minds of the 20th century, and into the vivid imaginings of one of music's most legendary lyricists.
