Book excerpt: While she is best remembered today as founder of the Philadelphia Ballet and the director and driving force behind the famous Littlefield School of Ballet, from which Balanchine drew the nucleus for his School of American Ballet, Catherine Littlefield (1905-51) and her oeuvre were in many ways emblematic of the full representation of dance throughout entertainments of the first half of the 20th century. From her early work as a teenager dancing for Florenz Ziegfeld to her later work in choreographing extravagant ice skating shows, a remarkable dance with 90 bicyclists for the 1940 World's Fair, and on television as resident choreographer for The Jimmy Durante Show, Littlefield was amongst the first choreographers to bring concert dance to broader venues, and her legacy lives on today in her enduring influence on generations of American ballet dancers. As the first biography of Littlefield, Catherine Littlefield: A Life in Dance traces her life in full from birth through childhood experiences dancing on the Academy of Music's grand stage, and from her foundation of the groundbreaking Philadelphia Ballet Company in 1935 to her later work in television and beyond. Littlefield counted among her many glamorous friends and colleagues writer Zelda Fitzgerald, conductor Leopold Stokowski, and composer Kurt Weill. This biography also provides an engrossing portrait of the remarkable Littlefield family, many of whom were instrumental to Catherine's success. With the unflagging support of her generous husband and indomitable mother, Littlefield gave shape to the course of American ballet in the 20th century long before Balanchine arrived in the United States.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur's Preceptor on Dancing Etiquette If a gentleman wishes to dance with any lady with whom he is unacquainted, it is proper for the gentle man to apply to the Master of Ceremonies for an introduction. It is highly indecorous in either lady or gentle man to give way to immoderate laughing, comment ing or sneering at those who are present. If you are not pleased with the company you may be in, better to withdraw at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays poses a series of questions revolving around nonsense, cacophony, queerness, race, and the dancing body. How can flamenco, as a diasporic complex of performance and communities of practice frictionally and critically bound to the complexities of Spanish history, illuminate theories of race and identity in performance? How can we posit, and argue for, genealogical relationships within and between genres across the vast expanses of the African—and Roma—diaspora? Neither are the essays presented here limited to flamenco, nor, consequently, are the responses to these questions reduced to this topic. What all the contributions here do share is the wish to come together, across disciplines and subject areas, within the academy and without, in the whirling, raucous, and messy spaces where the body is free—to celebrate its questioning, as well as the depths of the wisdom and knowledge it holds and sometimes reveals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur's Preceptor on Dancing Etiquette Professor D. L. Carpenter has been induced to publish the following selections on Dancing and Etiquette, with an easy explanation of the various figures of Quadrilles and Waltzes, at the solicitation of many of his pupils, subscribers, and friends, in the English language, so that all may readily understand it, and especially young beginners. He hopes that it will be found an excellent assistant in enabling them at pleasure to recall the following, which, though they may have been delightful in practice, and committed to memory with all precision, may yet, in connection with several different studies, which they must necessarily attend, have been forgotten. It was, indeed, the author's intention that this little work should be chiefly for the benefit of his own pupils, to bring before them those lessons which they have before practiced, and to enable them to study when and where they please. To render it of still more utility, he has been very careful to select those dances that are at the present time most admired at our assemblies, both public and private, in Philadelphia, and in Europe.
