Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur J. Raffles is a character created in the 1890s by E. W. Hornung, brother-in-law to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Raffles is, in many ways, a deliberate inversion of Holmes - he is a ""gentleman thief,"" living at the Albany, a prestigious address in London, playing cricket for the Gentlemen of England and supporting himself by carrying out ingenious burglaries. He is called the ""Amateur Cracksman,"" and often, at first, differentiates between himself and the ""professors"" - professional criminals from the lower classes. As Holmes has Dr. Watson to chronicle his adventures, Raffles has Harry ""Bunny"" Manders - a former schoolmate saved from disgrace and suicide by Raffles, whom Raffles persuaded to accompany him on a burglary. While Raffles often takes advantage of Manders' relative innocence, and sometimes treats him with a certain amount of contempt, he knows that Manders' bravery and loyalty are to be relied on utterly.

Just as classical training lays a foundation for the performance of other kinds of music, the basics of stage presence outlines here may be adopted to all kinds of performances, by all kinds of musicians." - page xiii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable guide to the traditions and best practices of the professional stage actor, from first rehearsal to final curtain. Professional stage actors are expected to have ready knowledge of a multitude of unwritten yet well-established protocols. Traditionally, this knowledge was passed along from one generation of stage actors to the next via word of mouth, or were learned by having one’s missteps corrected—until now. In The Stage Actor’s Handbook, these protocols have finally been assembled into one volume, allowing theatre artists to know in advance what is expected of them. A definitive guide for professionals and aspiring professionals alike, this book details best practices on everything from rehearsal demeanor to backstage etiquette. It also shares the theatre’s unique vernacular and revered superstitions, as well as field-tested guidelines on touring, interactions with the public, and more. Written by established theatre pros Michael Kostroff (The Producers, Les Misérables)and Julie Garnyé (Cats, Come From Away), The Stage Actor’s Handbook features bits of wisdom contributed by legendary stage actors, including Bebe Neuwirth, John Lithgow, Chita Rivera, Alfred Molina, Billy Porter, Betty Buckley, Harvey Fierstein, Sam Waterston, Jason Alexander, Cynthia Nixon, and Sir Patrick Stewart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: A group of Boys and Girls assemble, guided by the Boy and Girl Narrators, to choose the parts they will portray in the play about to be presented. They can be anything they want to be-a procedure which is objected to by the Interrupter, who breaks in on them. When he is overruled, however, he elects to be a gangster, and takes everyone's money. Soon the others, perhaps affected by his actions, begin to bicker and disagree, until the Producer's Son appears and implores them to stop. But they are soon in open challenge, and it is decided that the Producer's Son, who stands in the way of their selfish interests, must be removed. He is roughly dragged off, but not before warning all the Boys and Girls that they must not allow the pressure of a few to destroy what is best for the many. After his departure, however, it is the worst, not the best, which emerges, and the Narrators are hard pressed to explain that only by allowing free choice could the Professor know who deserved credit for doing well. Then, quietly, the Producer's Son returns, to reassure them that as long as even one good actor remains on stage the play can be saved-no matter how hopeless it may seem. For the play is as long as the world, all of us are the actors and actresses, it is our play.
