Our secretary sometimes reminds us that the sun never sets upon the alumnae Of this College. My reply is, Fine; then at least some of us' are wide awake all the time! And we are watching you with the same joy and pride with which a young grandmother watches her first grandchild. We are wishing for each of you happiness and success in your Chosen course. We know that you will do much to make the dream of the Founder of this great institution come true in a larger and finer way. I count this one of the great moments of my life - to be privileged even to at tempt to pay tribute to a man whom I consider one of the greatest of the great. She chose the Uni versity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and after a year of graduate study there, received the ma. Degree in Sociology, in 1926. For two years thereafter, Miss Bridgers taught history in the Greens boro High School. Followed another year Of study at the New York School of Social Work. This additional training led her into four fascinating years as visiting teacher in the Norwich, Con necticut, city-schools. Going from there to Houston, Texas, she did social service work in connection with Faith Home; but this year finds her back in the state of Connecticut, as visiting teacher for the Hartford public schools. Many of these women were active in professional academic circles, published in academic journals, and contributed to important philosophical discussions of the day: the question of free will, the nature of God in relation to self, and how to establish a just society. The most successful women earned their degrees at women-friendly institutions, yet a handful of them achieved professional distinction at institutions that refused to recognize their achievements at the time; John Hopkins and Harvard are notable examples. The women who did not develop careers in academic philosophy often moved to careers in social welfare or education. Thus, whilst looking at the academic success of some, this book also examines the policies and practices that made it difficult or impossible for others to succeed.
