Book excerpt: The Alpha Parchments is a new translation of the first five books of the Holy Bible, also referred to as The Torah. This work represents over 30 years of studying and comparing Bible translations but uses a new approach to making the Bible both very readable and accurate to the original Hebrew at the same time. The King James Version and Young’s Literal Translation have been employed as the "base text". For many this version will retain much of the literary style of those time honored works but all archaic language has been replaced with modern English. More importantly however, this version endeavors to be extremely accurate to the Hebrew definitions that comprise the original text. As a result new discoveries and a greater detail to the Biblical story has now been obtained. [author bio]Dallas James was born in 1950 in Sacramento, California and has lived most of his life in Seattle, Washington. He is a Christian who has spent over thirty years studying and comparing Bible translations.

"You must fulfill your duty as my Luna. you are no longer a church maid, Rosaria." He grabbed my legs as he spread them apart. "You will be rewarded with my seed, and you will reach ecstasy just to be filled." "But I didn't want this! I only wanted to be pure!" "You were never pure to begin with. Not as long as you are born in this accursed pack." *** All of her life, Rosaria devoted herself to the Hatiist Church. Hati, the Sun God and one of the sons of the Great Wolf, Fenrir, who attempted to eat the Moon Goddess and a threat to the werewolf race. But was he truly a danger despite his genuine love for them? So, she stayed at the covenant and prayed for their god's return. However, just before her ordination, the Alpha King of the Skollist pack came to the scene and declared her his fated mate. "Bear me a child who can rule over the pack," he said. Lord Varick despised Hati for bringing damnation to their pack and forced Rosaria to be his Luna - and her life changed for the worse.

Book excerpt: Footprints in Parchment Rome Versus Christianity 30-313 AD masterfully tackles the question: How did a group of Christians with no homeland and no standing army defeat the juggernaut of ancient Rome? Using hundreds of first-hand accounts of events, Silver guides the reader through the rise and the reach of Imperial Rome to its eventual ruin and rescue by the infant Christian Church. Over a three hundred year period Rome killed tens of thousands of Christians in an attempt to eradicate this new religion that it correctly intuited would bring Rome to its knees. Tertullian had said in the early 200's, "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." Why did Rome kill all those people just because they believed in a Jewish carpenter from an obscure part of her Empire and why did so many Christians willingly die? The martyrs died for the religious freedom to publicly say the words "Christianus sum." "I am a Christian." They won that right. Rome Versus Christianity leads the reader down the road of Rome's decline and Christianity's rise. There are many fascinating sights along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Amulets Christian: Artefacts, Scribes, and Contexts examines Greek amulets with Christian elements from late antique Egypt in order to discern the processes whereby a customary practice--the writing of incantations on amulets--changed in an increasingly Christian context. It considers how the formulation of incantations and amulets changed as the Christian church became the prevailing religious institution in Egypt in the last centuries of the Roman empire. Theodore de Bruyn investigates what we can learn from incantations and amulets containing Christian elements about the cultural and social location of the people who wrote them. He shows how incantations and amulets were indebted to rituals or ritualizing behavior of Christians. This study analyzes different types of amulets and the ways in which they incorporate Christian elements. By comparing the formulation and writing of individual amulets that are similar to one another, one can observe differences in the culture of the scribes of these materials. It argues for 'conditioned individuality' in the production of amulets. On the one hand, amulets manifest qualities that reflect the training and culture of the individual writer. On the other hand, amulets reveal that individual writers were shaped, whether consciously or inadvertently, by the resources they drew upon-by what is called 'tradition' in the field of religious studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring medical writing in England in the 100+ years after the advent of the “Great Mortality”, this book examines the storytelling practices of poets, patients, and physicians in the midst of a medieval public health crisis and demonstrates how literary narratives enable us to see a kinship between poetry and the healing arts. Looking at how we can learn to diagnose a text as if we were diagnosing a body, Salisbury provides new insights into how we can recuperate the voices of those afflicted by illness in medieval texts when we have no direct testimony. She considers how we interpret stories told by patients in narratives mediated by others, ways that women factor into the shaping of a medical canon, how medical writing intersects with religious belief and memorial practices governed by the Church, and ways that regimens of health benefit a population in the throes of an epidemic.
