Book excerpt: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc (AKA) is an organization of service, scholarship, and sisterhood built around the premise of making life better for all mankind. The Sorority was the brainchild of a courageous African American college educated woman, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. Forging ahead with the strength of her belief and desire that the college experience should provide a meaningful and purposeful road map that positively impacts the community, Soror Lyde sought out like-minded women that shared in the manifestation of her vision. In 1908, their efforts led to the establishment of AKA on the campus of Howard University.

Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “This book is more than a memoir—it also serves as a call to action to create a more equitable healthcare system for patients of color, particularly Black women.” —Essence One of NPR’s 11 Books to Look Forward to in 2024 One of Good Morning America’s 15 New Books to Read for the New Year “Legacy is both a compelling memoir and an edifying analysis of the inequities in the way we deliver healthcare in America. Uché Blackstock is a force of nature.” —Abraham Verghese, MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Covenant of Water “[An] extraordinary family story.” —Dr. Damon Tweedy, The New York Times Book Review “This book should be required reading for all medical students.” —Gayle King, CBS Mornings The rousing, captivating story of a Black physician, her career in medicine, and the deep inequities that still exist in the U.S. healthcare system Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, it never occurred to Uché Blackstock and her twin sister, Oni, that they would be anything but physicians. In the 1980s, their mother headed an organization of Black women physicians, and for years the girls watched these fiercely intelligent women in white coats tend to their patients and neighbors, host community health fairs, cure ills, and save lives. What Dr. Uché Blackstock did not understand as a child—or learn about at Harvard Medical School, where she and her sister had followed in their mother’s footsteps, making them the first Black mother-daughter legacies from the school—were the profound and long-standing systemic inequities that mean just 2 percent of all U.S. physicians today are Black women; the racist practices and policies that ensure Black Americans have far worse health outcomes than any other group in the country; and the flawed system that endangers the well-being of communities like theirs. As an ER physician, and later as a professor in academic medicine, Dr. Blackstock became profoundly aware of the systemic barriers that Black patients and physicians continue to face. Legacy is a journey through the critical intersection of racism and healthcare. At once a searing indictment of our healthcare system, a generational family memoir, and a call to action, Legacy is Dr. Blackstock’s odyssey from child to medical student to practicing physician—to finally seizing her own power as a health equity advocate against the backdrop of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Legacy comes full circle in the final installment, proving that love conquers all, and that fate truly cannot be denied. An epic ending that ensures The Legacy will stay with readers and fans, long after the final page. Anna's ability to weave both the real and unreal worlds of her story together is quite masterful. For those readers committed to tales of vampires and werewolves or other exotic themes, her manner of incorporating that realm with the contemporary world and life will likely satisfy as much as for those readers testing the waters of fantasy for the first time. - Grady Harp, Top Shelf Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the chronological history of one of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sororitys graduate chapters, Phi Eta Omega of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, from its chartering in 1999 through 2013. Ten inactive members (sorors) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., rekindling a desire to be of service to others, assembled at a sorors home in Plainfield, New Jersey, in the early winter of 1998. Soon this small group grew to fourteen and, ultimately, to seventeen women. These seventeen inactive sorors became an official interest group of the sorority later that year. With the mission to promote harmony and friendship among members, to develop and implement programs to enhance the self-esteem of youth, and to assist others wherever needed in their communities, these women, full of energy and enthusiasm, ventured into unknown waters. Becoming the first Greek letter organization to affiliate with the New Jersey Orators, the Scotch Plains/Union County Interest Group helped foster the development of confidence and public speaking skills in youth ages seven to seventeen. TAG, a weekly tutorial program, was also established. Since its chartering on June 6, 1999, Phi Eta Omega Chapter continues to institute and participate in other altruistic programs: the Angel Network; collection of coats and other winter clothing during local coat drives; donation of suits for Dress Barns Dress for Success; financial support to two Kenyan students in Africa; donation of duffel bags filled with pajamas, clothing, books, and other sundries to Union County Division of Child Protection and Permanency; and the replacement of the headstone of Caesar, a Revolutionary Warfreed slave, at Scotch Plains Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

The alpha is the chance to begin and the omega is the legacy you were born to leave behind. First the dream and then the persistence to see that dream be realised. I encourage you to dream big and to plan for endless abundance in your life. When you exhale love and belief into your dreams, you give them the vital power to evolve and touch the lives of countless people. Delaying your dreams is pressing the pause button on your true potential and your pursuit of excellence. So what is it you truly desire? When will you start to live the life of your dreams? As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it: boldness has genius, power and magic in it." If we were born to inspire and be inspired, why wait for happiness to happen? Happiness happens to those who know what they want and who will do what it takes to attain all they desire (provided what they desire is within the laws of humanity). I begin to write this book knowing that life is about keeping true to your inner light. The alpha is the chance to begin and the omega is the legacy you were born to leave behind.

Book excerpt: I. DEATH After a long, frightening journey, a Seeker of Truth reaches the top of a mountain and finds the cave of the Wise One. He says, O, Wise One, I have come many miles and suffered many hardships, to ask you one question. Ask, says the Wise One. What is the meaning of life? says the pilgrim. The Wise One pauses, smiles slightly, and replies. You have come far and seem to me worthy, so I shall give you what you seekthe truth. The answer is in your question and this journey is your life. Go back down the mountain. When you arrive, you will know how much time you have wasted, and you will have no more time left. So, give me your watch. Why is life so mysterious, and why is its purpose so elusive to us? It may be that we have looked for the meaning of life in the wrong places as though in a nightmarish scavenger hunt arranged by the Prince of Darkness himself. From one moment to another, we thought it was money or power or fame or honor or comfort or some other pleasure of the flesh, only to see them, finally, as false clues leading to a mountain we shouldnt have climbed. This book records an inquiry that found the meaning of life by discovering the meaning of death. This is reflected in the words and behavior of those who decide to die: the suicides. These poor souls have much to teach us, for they have measured out for us the value of death, from which we can calculate the value of life. So a study of suicide leads to the truth about lifeyours and mine. This book guides you to that revelation. The surprise of the book is that you will discover that you knew it all along. The promise of the book is that you will know that you know. II. LIFE The relationships that a person has with other people are the central core of that persons existence. The people you meet, the members of your family, those whom you love, and even your sworn enemy are the motivating forces behind everything you do and the reason for your stay on this planet. In short, the meaning of life is relationship. What if life were relationship, pure and simple, the end and the beginning? If life is relationship, it is not wealth or fame. It is not winning or acquiring or what you accomplish or where you live or how much education you have or the honors you have been given. It is not how law-abiding you are or how devout you are in your religious faith. Your worth is measured not by your bank account, the property in your name, or the trust you established for your child or children. Your worth is measured by the relationships you have formed in your lifetime and the care with which you have conducted them and the way that you treated those other persons. This view of people as enmeshed in relationships with others living in, by, and for them rejects the Cult of Self and the selfishness nourishing that demon. Your lifes meaning is before your eyes each day. In every encounter that you have with another person, every word or glance or touch, life reaches out and embraces you and fulfills your purpose for being here.
