Download or read book West African Religious Traditions written by Robert B. Fisher and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West African Religious Traditions provides a unique and accessible way for readers to understand the dynamics and structures of traditional African religion, and to see its resonances in African-American religious life today. Focusing on the Akan of Ghana, this book is the result of the author's lifetime of close collaboration with Ghanaians at all levels of that West African nation. West African Religious Traditions is a remarkable entree into a fascinating world of African religion and culture. Fisher has lived and taught in Ghana and brings to his writing both love for Africa and the keen eye of a trained liturgist who knows the importance of grounding his statement of principles in concrete observations of song, dance, ceremonies, and recitations of mythic narratives. Ghanaians have been involved at every stage of the writing and re-writing of this book, helping to clarify the material. The result is an up-to-date, well researched, and student-ready volume, whose study questions and bibliography make it ideal for classroom use.

Book excerpt: The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices takes the reader through the ancestry of present-day Akan people - from the influence of ancient Egypt, through the ancient Empires of Western Sudan and into the forest belt of present-day Ghana. Comparative analysis of cultural practices (such as kingship and the royal setup, death, funeral rites, and family structures) between ancient Egypt and present-day Akan people are highlighted. The three elements that make up an Akan person - Blood, Soul, and Spirit - as well as the Akan family structure are elaborately treated, and a clear cultural distinction between an Akan family and clan is explained. Names and their appellations, signs and symbols, as well as some kente designs are highlighted in the appendices. Ultimately, cultural challenges of the Akan in the contemporary world are brought to the fore.

Book Synopsis The Akan Diaspora in the Americas by : Kwasi Konadu
Download or read book The Akan Diaspora in the Americas written by Kwasi Konadu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his groundbreaking study of the Akan diaspora, Konadu demonstrates how this cultural group originating in West Africa both engaged in and went beyond the familiar diasporic themes of maroonage, resistance, and freedom. Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Akan never formed a majority among other Africans in the Americas. But their leadership skills in war and political organization, efficacy in medicinal plant use and spiritual practice, and culture archived in the musical traditions, language, and patterns of African diasporic life far outweighed their sheer numbers. Konadu argues that a composite Akan culture calibrated between the Gold Coast and forest fringe made the contributions of the Akan diaspora possible. The book examines the Akan experience in Guyana, Jamaica, Antigua, Barbados, former Danish and Dutch colonies, and North America, and how those early experiences foreground the modern engagement and movement of diasporic Africans and Akan people between Ghana and North America. Locating the Akan variable in the African diasporic equation allows scholars and students of the Americas to better understand how the diasporic quilt came to be and is still evolving.

Book excerpt: The Akans are an ethnic group in West Africa, predominantly Ghana and Togo, of roughly 25 million people. From the twelfth century on, Akans created numerous states based largely on gold mining and trading of cash crops. This brought wealth to numerous Akan states, such as Akwamu, which stretched all the way to modern Benin, and ultimately led to the rise of the best known Akan empire, the Empire of Ashanti. Throughout history, Akans were a highly educated group; notable Akan people in modern times include Kwame Nkrumah and Kofi Annan. This volume features a new array of primary sources that provide fresh and nuanced perspectives. This collection is the first of its kind.

Book Synopsis The Making of an African King by : Anthony Ephirim-Donkor
Download or read book The Making of an African King written by Anthony Ephirim-Donkor and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kingship (chieftaincy) disputes are commonplace in Ghana. These disputes may begin as rivalries among eligible candidates, or when ineligible candidates are elected caretaker kings due to their invaluable services to a royal family. However, upon the demise of the caretaker rulers, sometimes their descendants refuse to cede power, thus creating protracted and sometimes violent power struggles. This is exactly what happened to the Ᾱwutu-ābe (Effutu) of Simpa. In 1898, twenty-seven years after the death of a caretaker ruler elected by the Otuano Royal Family for his invaluable service to the royal family, his nephew contested the throne plunging the Ᾱwutu into a cycle of contentious internecine struggle. The Making of an African King examines the source of the struggle as seen by colonial administrators, and the final court ruling in June 2013 between the patrilineal Otuano Royal Family against the non-royal Acquah faction that favors the matrilineal system of descent practiced by the Akan.
