Book Synopsis Missionary Spaces by : Thomas Coomans
Download or read book Missionary Spaces written by Thomas Coomans and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘spatial turn’ of missionary places Situated at the crossroads of missionary history, imperial history and colonial architecture, this volume examines the architectural staging and spatial implications of the worldwide expansion of Christianity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By focusing on specific architectural fragments, analysing the intersection of Christian edifices in colonial and traditional urban settings or unravelling the social understanding of missionary places, each chapter strives to understand the agency of missionary spaces. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and fields, this book aims to centre those missionary spaces by approaching them not merely as décor around and within which the missionary encounter was acted, but by making them part and parcel of it. Through its approach, Missionary Spaces provides a new paradigm for scrutinising the ‘spatial turn’ for missionary histories and contributes to the increased attention across the humanities to space, place, and location since the late 1990s. Space does not occur as an historical given, but as a social construction to be analysed, while at the same time having explanatory value of its own. This book focuses on Africa and the Chinese Region with contributions on Burundi, China, Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and Taiwan.
Book Synopsis Life Lessons of an Immigrant by : John Makilya
Download or read book Life Lessons of an Immigrant written by John Makilya and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Makilya reveals an in-depth look of Kenya, its people, and its traditions in this memoir about growing up there and starting a family before immigrating to the United States of America. He traces his roots, including how his father became a pioneer educator and was selected to lead a Kenyan delegation on a pilgrimage to Rome during the 1950 Catholic Jubilee. Upon his return to Kenya, he acquired land for the establishment of a Catholic church and later ventured into parliamentary politics. Makilya also recalls his own career in various sectors, including savings and credit cooperatives, ranching and the beef industry, sustainable community-owned water projects, horticultural production and marketing, community-owned fishing enterprises, and wildlife conservation. In doing so, he shares an intimate account of his work as a consultant making socioeconomic assessments of the World Bankfunded El Nio Emergency Project, his role in the enterprise development component of a USAID COBRA project, and his work as chairman of the board of governors of the Misyani Girls Schoolwhere he insisted girls were as talented in math and science as boys. Join the author on an inspiring journey from Kenya to the United States in Life Lessons of an Immigrant.
Book Synopsis Witchcraft and Colonial Rule in Kenya, 1900–1955 by : Katherine Luongo
Download or read book Witchcraft and Colonial Rule in Kenya, 1900–1955 written by Katherine Luongo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on colonial Kenya, this book shows how conflicts between state authorities and Africans over witchcraft-related crimes provided an important space in which the meanings of justice, law and order in the empire were debated. Katherine Luongo discusses the emergence of imperial networks of knowledge about witchcraft. She then demonstrates how colonial concerns about witchcraft produced an elaborate body of jurisprudence about capital crimes. The book analyzes the legal wrangling that produced the Witchcraft Ordinances in the 1910s, the birth of an anthro-administrative complex surrounding witchcraft in the 1920s, the hotly contested Wakamba Witch Trials of the 1930s, the explosive growth of legal opinion on witch-murder in the 1940s, and the unprecedented state-sponsored cleansings of witches and Mau Mau adherents during the 1950s. A work of anthropological history, this book develops an ethnography of Kamba witchcraft or uoi.

Book Synopsis Science, Theology, and Ethics by : Ted Peters
Download or read book Science, Theology, and Ethics written by Ted Peters and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science challenges faith to seek fuller understanding, and faith challenges science to be socially and ethically responsible. This book begins with faith in God the Creator of the world, and then expands our understanding of creation in light of Big Bang cosmology and new discoveries in physics. Examining the expanding frontier of genetic research, Ted Peters draws out implications for theological understandings of human nature and human freedom. Issues discussed include: methodology in science and theology; eschatology in cosmology and theology; freedom and responsibility in evolution and theology; and genetic determinism, genetic engineering, and cloning in relation to freedom, the comodification of human life, and equitable distribution of the fruits of genetic technology. The dialogue model of relationship between science and religion, proposed in this book, provides a common ground for the disparate voices among theologians, scientists, and world religions. This common ground has the potential to breathe new life into current debates about the world in which we live, move, and have our being.
