Book Synopsis Massive Star Birth (IAU S227) by : Riccardo Cesaroni
Download or read book Massive Star Birth (IAU S227) written by Riccardo Cesaroni and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive stars, those with between 10 and 100 times the mass of the Sun, are among the rarest stars of all. They live fast and die young, but during their short lives produce the most dramatic effects on the surrounding interstellar medium in terms of dynamics, ionization, and chemical enrichment. Until a few decades ago massive star birth was literally shrouded in mystery, since these stars are born deep inside dense clouds of swirling dust and gas that obscure our view. At IAU S227, more than 200 of the world's leading astronomers presented a cornucopia of new results concerning the birth and infancy of massive stars. These proceedings show the achievements reached in this field, due to observations in the radio at mm and sub-mm wavelengths and in the infrared, and to theoretical models that simulate what happens in the cradle of a massive star.
Book Synopsis The Lives and Death-Throes of Massive Stars (IAU S329) by : J.J. Eldridge
Download or read book The Lives and Death-Throes of Massive Stars (IAU S329) written by J.J. Eldridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on massive stars is undergoing a period of rapid progress, with long-held convictions being shown to be incomplete. While these stars are relatively few in number, they are the main driver of chemical and dynamical evolution in galaxies through their stellar winds and explosive deaths in core-collapse supernovae. Furthermore the impact of massive stars is widely recognized in many areas, as they are often used as tools to interpret the conditions and processes arising in different environments. In parallel, the development of new instrumentation, analysis techniques and dedicated surveys across all possible wavelengths have delivered large amounts of exquisite new data. These data are now providing a harsh test for the current state-of-the-art theoretical calculations of massive star birth, evolution and death. IAU Symposium 329 covers these topics and is therefore an invaluable resource for researchers in the field of massive stars and their evolution.
Book Synopsis Low-metallicity Star Formation (IAU S255) by : International Astronomical Union. Symposium
Download or read book Low-metallicity Star Formation (IAU S255) written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although low-mass metal-poor galaxies in the local universe have often been proposed as the 'primordial building blocks' in the hierarchical scenario of structure formation, several lines of evidence suggest that this may not be true. Moreover, it is not clear to what extent dwarf galaxies, because they are metal poor and because of their kinematics and structure, can tell us about how star formation proceeded in the early universe. This volume provides an overview and the most recent advances in this debate. IAU Symposium 255 presents the most up-to-date developments in six key areas, including: Population III and metal-free star formation; metal-enrichment, chemical evolution and feedback; explosive events in low-metallicity environments; dust and gas as seeds for metal-poor star formation; metal-poor initial mass functions, stellar evolution and star-formation histories; and low-metallicity star formation in the local universe. This overview is at a level suitable for research astronomers and graduate students.
Book Synopsis Young Stars and Planets Near the Sun (IAU S314) by : Joel H. Kastner
Download or read book Young Stars and Planets Near the Sun (IAU S314) written by Joel H. Kastner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, astronomers have discovered an abundance of young stars within ~100 parsecs of the Sun. Thanks to their proximity, these stars provide unique opportunities to investigate early stellar evolution, and they offer readily accessible targets for direct imaging and other measurements of dusty circumstellar disks, newly-formed brown dwarfs and, especially, young exoplanets. This volume highlights major advances in our understanding of the early evolution of stars and planetary systems flowing from investigations of nearby young stars. It features contributions that approach such studies from a wide variety of directions: the identification, ages, and origins of local young moving groups; early stellar evolution from theoretical and observational perspectives; and aspects of nascent or recently formed exoplanet systems. This up-to-date reference on local groups of young stars and their ability to aid the widening search for exoplanets addresses advanced students and researchers in the field.

This book was released on 2007-08-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 240, held in conjunction with the 26th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, highlights the latest advances in the field of binary and multiple stars, and was the first major meeting in recent years bringing together members of both the 'wide' and 'close' binary communities. Topics discussed ranged from common proper motion pairs and other 'fragile' binaries to contact binaries and star/brown-dwarf/planet systems, exploring the numerous interests common to all binary star researchers. Highlights included talks on observing binaries using high angular and spectral resolution techniques, the impacts of new and planned large-scale surveys, recent models for binary evolution, new methods for analyzing cataclysmic pairs and disentangling spectra, surveys of extragalactic eclipsing binaries, Doppler tomography and imaging, and binaries as probes of the Galaxy's chemical and dynamical evolution. This volume will be an important reference source for binary star researchers for many years to come.

Download or read book Astronomy in Focus XXX written by Maria Teresa Lago and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy in Focus presents the most relevant contributions from the Focus Meetings included during the XXX IAU General Assembly held in Vienna, Austria, from 20-31 August 2018. Focus meetings are proposed by groups of scientists with aims to promote cross-disciplinary interactions while maintaining a well-defined focus on a particular topic. They usually address a new scientific area or an emerging field that is not well, or in some cases not at all, represented under the IAU's existing Commission structure. The XXX IAU General Assembly included six scientific symposia, a special symposium focused on the IAU's centenary and fifteen Focus Meetings. The latter comprised twelve scientific Focus Meetings plus two on the mission and activities of the IAU Offices of Astronomy Outreach and Astronomy for Development and the final one promoted by the Working Group on Global Coordination of Ground and Space Astrophysics.

Book Synopsis The History of Modern Astronomy in Japan by : Tomokazu Kogure
Download or read book The History of Modern Astronomy in Japan written by Tomokazu Kogure and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the history of modern astronomy and astrophysics in Japan by comparing with the development of astrophysics in western countries. Astrophysics essentially arose in three separate fields: astronomical spectroscopy, stellar structure, and survey of celestial objects. This book introduces readers to the state of astronomy back to the Tokugawa era (18th – 19th centuries), when the chief task of astronomers was limited to the calendar making. With the so-called Meiji revolution (1868), the situation drastically changed. The Meiji Government promoted the modernization of Japan by hiring numbers of foreign instructors in political, social, and cultural affairs, including Construction of Observatory and University. Then the foreign studies of Japanese researchers lasted for many years. After the Second World War, Japan experienced great social and economical growth allowing the constructions of large optical, radio, and space instruments. With this background astrophysics progressed and eventually flourished. The book ends by highlighting Japanese contributions to international collaboration up to the early 21st century. Readers of this book will understand how astrophysics has grown into one of the major sciences in Japan, and how the works of individual astronomers are contributing to the global advancement of knowledge of the universe.

Book Synopsis History of the IAU by : Adriaan Blaauw
Download or read book History of the IAU written by Adriaan Blaauw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This History has its origin in a suggestion, made in September 1990 by former IAU General Secretary Derek McNally, who felt "that a 75 year history of the Union was needed before the col lective memory of those who knew the Union before the Second World War vanished. It would then be a preparatory volume to a centennial history in 2019. " Indeed, of those who knew the Union that long ago, few are still with us. Six years ago, at Baltimore on August 2, 1988, listening and reminiscing at the Inaugural Ceremonies of the Union's 20th General Assembly, I realized that it was almost exactly half a century ago that, at the age of 24, I attended the Inaugurations at my "first" Assembly: on August 3, 1938 in Stockholm. Now, in 1994, this is almost 56 years ago, three quarters of the Union's age. Only vague recollections - no better than that -lead me back to this event, just before World War II. And so, this is not a history based on recollection, far from it. Recollection was helpful in that it allowed me, better perhaps than a younger author, to appreciate circumstances under which the letters and reports which form the basis for this History were written. The account is largely based on archival documents, collected from a wide variety of sources.
