Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aesthetic Purpose of Byzantine Architecture: And Other Essays The Opening essay on Byzantine Architecture breathes that generous appreciation Of the value Of the Eastern Empire to civilization and Christen dom which the world is at last learning to recog nize. The incomparable majesty Of Santa Sophia, again, has never inspired a more full-throated paean. Byzantine art was the mingling Of East and West, the marriage of colour and form, and its glowing rays are traced Westwards to the shrines Of Venice and Monreale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aesthetic Purpose of Byzantine Architecture, and Other Essays Of the essays contained in this volume, that on Edward Munch appeared in the Fortnightly Review, while most of the others were published in the Contemporary Review, to which Count de Soissons has for many years been a valued contributor. Sir Percy Bunting entertained a high opinion of his work, and the Count has recorded his friendship for the late Editor in the dedication of his work, "My Sentimental Ancestress." As the successor of Sir Percy, I have been asked to write a few words of introduction. During his years of residence in England the author has built up a solid reputation as a critic of literature and art, and he combines in a rare degree the three essential qualifications of knowledge, insight, and expression. His wide acquaintance with many aspects of civilization is evidenced in all his writings, while his charming volumes on the nieces of Mazarin and the unruly daughters of the Regent exhibit his intimate familiarity with the history of his own country. Book Synopsis Hagia Sophia and the Byzantine Aesthetic Experience by : Nadine Schibille
Download or read book Hagia Sophia and the Byzantine Aesthetic Experience written by Nadine Schibille and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paramount in the shaping of early Byzantine identity was the construction of the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (532-537 CE). This book examines the edifice from the perspective of aesthetics to define the concept of beauty and the meaning of art in early Byzantium. Byzantine aesthetic thought is re-evaluated against late antique Neoplatonism and the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius that offer fundamental paradigms for the late antique attitude towards art and beauty. These metaphysical concepts of aesthetics are ultimately grounded in experiences of sensation and perception, and reflect the ways in which the world and reality were perceived and grasped, signifying the cultural identity of early Byzantium. There are different types of aesthetic data, those present in the aesthetic object and those found in aesthetic responses to the object. This study looks at the aesthetic data embodied in the sixth-century architectural structure and interior decoration of Hagia Sophia as well as in literary responses (ekphrasis) to the building. The purpose of the Byzantine ekphrasis was to convey by verbal means the same effects that the artefact itself would have caused. A literary analysis of these rhetorical descriptions recaptures the Byzantine perception and expectations, and at the same time reveals the cognitive processes triggered by the Great Church. The central aesthetic feature that emerges from sixth-century ekphraseis of Hagia Sophia is that of light. Light is described as the decisive element in the experience of the sacred space and light is simultaneously associated with the notion of wisdom. It is argued that the concepts of light and wisdom are interwoven programmatic elements that underlie the unique architecture and non-figurative decoration of Hagia Sophia. A similar concern for the phenomenon of light and its epistemological dimension is reflected in other contemporary monuments, testifying to the pervasiveness of these aesthetic values in early Byzantium.

Download or read book Byzantium/Modernism written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantium/Modernism features contributions by fourteen international scholars and brings together a diverse range of interdisciplinary essays on art, architecture, theatre, film, literature, and philosophy, which examine how and why Byzantine art and image theory can contribute to our understanding of modern and contemporary visual culture. Particular attention is given to intercultural dialogues between the former dominions of the Byzantine Empire, with a special focus on Greece, Turkey, and Russia, and the artistic production of Western Europe and America. Together, these essays invite the reader to think critically and theoretically about the dialogic interchange between Byzantium and modernism and to consider this cross-temporal encounter as an ongoing and historically deep narrative, rather than an ephemeral or localized trend. Contributors are Tulay Atak, Charles Barber, Elena Boeck, Anthony Cutler, Rico Franses, Dimitra Kotoula, Marie-José Mondzain, Myroslava M. Mudrak, Robert S. Nelson, Robert Ousterhout, Stratis Papaioannou, Glenn Peers, Jane A. Sharp and Devin Singh.

Download or read book Approaches to Byzantine Architecture and its Decoration written by Mark J. Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteen essays in this collection demonstrate a wide variety of approaches to the study of Byzantine architecture and its decoration, a reflection of both newer trends and traditional scholarship in the field. The variety is also a reflection of Professor Curcic’s wide interests, which he shares with his students. These include the analysis of recent archaeological discoveries; recovery of lost monuments through archival research and onsite examination of material remains; reconsidering traditional typological approaches often ignored in current scholarship; fresh interpretations of architectural features and designs; contextualization of monuments within the landscape; tracing historiographic trends; and mining neglected written sources for motives of patronage. The papers also range broadly in terms of chronology and geography, from the Early Christian through the post-Byzantine period and from Italy to Armenia. Three papers examine Early Christian monuments, and of these two expand the inquiry into their architectural afterlives. Others discuss later monuments in Byzantine territory and monuments in territories related to Byzantium such as Serbia, Armenia, and Norman Italy. No Orthodox church being complete without interior decoration, two papers discuss issues connected to frescoes in late medieval Balkan churches. Finally, one study investigates the continued influence of Byzantine palace architecture long after the fall of Constantinople.

Download or read book Eastern Medieval Architecture written by Robert Ousterhout and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich and diverse architectural traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and adjacent regions are the subject of this book. Representing the visual residues of a "forgotten" Middle Ages, the social and cultural developments of the Byzantine Empire, the Caucasus, the Balkans, Russia, and the Middle East parallel the more familiar architecture of Western Europe. The book offers an expansive view of the architectural developments of the Byzantine Empire and areas under its cultural influence, as well as the intellectual currents that lie behind their creation. The book alternates chapters that address chronological or regionally-based developments with thematic studies that focus on the larger cultural concerns, as they are expressed in architectural form.
