Book excerpt: This book focuses on using and implementing Circulation Control (CC) - an active flow control method used to produce increased lift over the traditionally used systems, like flaps, slats, etc. - to design a new type of fixed-wing unmanned aircraft that are endowed with improved aerodynamic efficiency, enhanced endurance, increased useful payload (fuel capacity, battery cells, on-board sensors) during cruise flight, delayed stall, and reduced runway during takeoff and landing. It presents the foundations of a step-by-step comprehensive methodology from design to implementation and experimental testing of Coandǎ based Circulation Control Wings (CCWs) and CC system, both integral components of the new type of aircraft, called Unmanned Circulation Control Air Vehicle. The methodology is composed of seven coupled phases: theoretical and mathematical analysis, design, simulation, 3-D printing/prototyping, wind tunnel testing, wing implementation and integration, and flight testing. The theoretical analysis focuses on understanding the physics of the flow and on defining the design parameters of the geometry restrictions of the wing and the plenum. The design phase centers on: designs of Coandǎ surfaces based on wing geometry specifications; designing and modifying airfoils from well-known ones (NACA series, Clark-Y, etc.); plenum designs for flow uniformity; dual radius flap designs to delay flow separation and reduce cruise drag. The simulation phase focuses on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and simulations, and on calculating lift and drag coefficients of the designed CCWs in a simulation environment. 3-D printing and prototyping focuses on the actual construction of the CCWs. Wind tunnel testing centers on experimental studies in a laboratory environment. One step before flight testing is implementation of the qualified CCW and integration on the UAV platform, along with the CC system. Flight testing is the final phase, where design validation is performed. This book is the first of its kind, and it is suitable for students and researchers interested in the design and development of CCWs for small-scale aircraft. Background knowledge on fundamental Aerodynamics is required.

Book excerpt: The prime goal of the investigations has been the evaluation of the unsteady aerodynamics, and in particular the transfer functions, applicable to the Circulation Control Airfoil (CCA) for the situation of harmonic blowing perturbations superimposed upon a mean cavity pressure. Circulation control was achieved upon the relatively thick (t/c = 0.214) elliptically shaped two-dimensional air foil by tangential jet injection at an upper surface slot just ahead of the rounded trailing edge. The experiments were conducted in the Naval Postgraduate School unsteady flow 2 x 2 foot wind tunnel. Preliminary results were obtained disclosing the nature of unsteady surface pressures over the airfoil, both amplitude and phase, relative to the oscillating cavity pressures for a range of reduced frequencies, k=0 to 0.46, at a model attitude approximating the zero lift condition (blowing-off) at a moderate value of momentum blowing coefficient. Positive results were obtained towards identifying the behavior of the Coanda sheet dynamics, airfoil lift transfer function and airfoil damping moment.

Book excerpt: Based on the potential flow theory calculation, the capacity of the air supply, the limitation of the internal pressure of the model and the limitation due to the compressibility effect of the jet stream at high velocities, the elliptical airfoils of 18- and 12-percent-thickness ratios were designed and constructed. Experimental investigations for both models with trailing edge jets include force (lift and drag) and pitching moment measurements. In addition, static pressure measurements were made in both spanwise and chordwise directions. These results were used to compare with available theories. Circulation control with dual jets for the elliptical airfoil of 18-percent-thickness ratio was tested with very satisfactory results. Tests were also made to determine the practicality of circulation control using a jet issuing from the leading edge region of the airfoil. The determination of the aerodynamic response of the airfoil model to cyclic changes in jet mass flow was also made. The cyclic results were very satisfactory and are presented in the form of pulsating lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and pressure coefficient as a function of pulsating jet coefficient. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do aircraft fly? How do their wings support them? In the early years of aviation, there was an intense dispute between British and German experts over the question of why and how an aircraft wing provides lift. The British, under the leadership of the great Cambridge mathematical physicist Lord Rayleigh, produced highly elaborate investigations of the nature of discontinuous flow, while the Germans, following Ludwig Prandtl in Göttingen, relied on the tradition called “technical mechanics” to explain the flow of air around a wing. Much of the basis of modern aerodynamics emerged from this remarkable episode, yet it has never been subject to a detailed historical and sociological analysis. In The Enigma of the Aerofoil, David Bloor probes a neglected aspect of this important period in the history of aviation. Bloor draws upon papers by the participants—their restricted technical reports, meeting minutes, and personal correspondence, much of which has never before been published—and reveals the impact that the divergent mathematical traditions of Cambridge and Göttingen had on this great debate. Bloor also addresses why the British, even after discovering the failings of their own theory, remained resistant to the German circulation theory for more than a decade. The result is essential reading for anyone studying the history, philosophy, or sociology of science or technology—and for all those intrigued by flight.

Book excerpt: A concept of a cross-flow fan (CFF) embedded near the leading edge of an airfoil to actively control the boundary layer for lift and thrust enhancement has been proposed. The design places a cross-flow fan near the leading edge of an airfoil and flow is drawn in from the pressure side of the airfoil, energized and expelled out to the suction side near the leading edge. This CFF system simulates the active boundary layer control by blowing commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code ANSYS Fluent is employed to perform 2-D calculations based on various parameters of the CFF and compared the data with an experimental baseline case found in literature. The effect of number of blades, pressure side slat opening, suction side slat angle, hub-to-shroud ratio and blade pitch angle have on aerodynamic parameters have been investigated. Regression models are established using the acquired data to find combination of parameters for achieving higher circulation control. Unsteady sliding mesh method is used to carry out the numerical simulation. The fan geometry is developed and housed in a NACA 651-212 airfoil. The of the CFD work show that the jet leaving the fan replaces the boundary layer of the upstream flow with a flow of very high velocity. This high velocity flow causes a higher pressure difference between the suction and the pressure side generating higher lift in the process. The drag of the airfoil is overcame and a net thrust is observed by CFF blowing phenomenon.

Book excerpt: A circulation control (CC) elliptic airfoil section with a thickness- to-chord ratio of 0.17 and 1- percent circular arc camber, was experimentally evaluated to determine its low speed aerodynamic characteristics. The model profile is that of a previously tested single upper surface trailing edge slot airfoil, modified to incorporate an additional blowing slot on the lower surface. The main objective of this initial test was to determine if the control range, that is the range of lift coefficient available at a given angle-of- attack and momentum coefficient, could be increased without compromising the performance previously obtained with the single slot version. Test results show that the control range is more than doubled and there is no impact on upper surface only blowing performance. The range of lift coefficient produced at alpha equals zero degrees, using a combination of upper and lower slot only blowing is C1 from +3.6 to -4.0. Blowing efficiency when using the lower slot was found to be higher than that obtained when using the upper slot. This finding was somewhat unexpected, since lower surface blowing is equivalent to using CC on a negatively cambered airfoil. Data was acquired using either only the upper or lower surface slot or with dual blowing, that is simultaneous upper and lower slot blowing.

Book excerpt: Calculating the lift, drag, and pitching moment coefficients for an airfoil from the static pressure distribution obtained from wind tunnel tests is routine task when steady flow is considered, but it is much more complicated when the airfoil is operating in an unsteady flow field, similar to that experienced by a helicopter rotor blade, produced by an oscillating wind tunnel. A data reduction routine capable of condensing the large numbers of data associated with the unsteady investigation, as well as a numerical integration algorithm for the unsteady aerodynamic coefficients, were developed; however, no unsteady data were collected due to hardware failures. The ability of the program was demonstrated on previously obtained steady and quasi-steady data and sample results were presented. (Author).

This book was released on 1981 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excellent high-lift and cruise performance of a small, round, fixed circulation control wing (CCW) trailing edge fitted to a supercritical airfoil has been confirmed by subsonic wind tunnel investigations. This fixed-trailing- edge blown high-lift airfoil generates a negligible subsonic cruise drag penalty, but can generate a section lift coefficient near 7.0. This configuration is a significant improvement over the flight-proven A-6/CCW airfoil that had similar lift performance, but had a large trailing edge requiring mechanization for transition to cruise flight. Further, the large leading edge radius of the supercritical airfoil allows operating at high lift over a moderate angle-of-attack range. These results imply the feasibility of a mono-element airfoil with no moving components required for high lift; the transition from the cruise to the high-lift configuration is accomplished by blowing from a fixed slot. The favorable characteristics of both the cruise and high-lift airfoils are retained without compromise to either. (Author).
