Book excerpt: It's another beautiful day in St. Petersburg, Missouri, but Tom Sawyer certainly isn't going to enjoy it.He's got a big bucket of whitewash with him, and big fence to whitewash.Tom attempts to get Jim to do some of his work for him, promising to fetch water from the well in return. When Jim looks skeptical - he doesn't want to get punished - Tom promises to trade him a "white ally" marble, marbles apparently being a hot commodity in St. Petersburg, and, when that fails, to show him his sore toe - sore toes apparently being similarly sought after.Jim tricks the trickster: he takes a look at Tom's toe, and runs away, laughing. So, Tom actually sets to work whitewashing the fence, but it's not too long before he gets bored out of his mind and sets about concocting a scheme. He takes his "stash" out from his pockets - toys, marbles, garbage - and puts it by his side; then he puts on his happiest face and goes back to painting.Tom's buddy Ben Rogers, a notorious teaser, comes by.Ben's enjoying his Saturday, pretending to be a big ol' steamboat, but when he finally stops and tries to call attention to Tom's troubles, to his work, Tom pretends that he'd rather be painting fences than anything else, even playing or swimming. This makes Ben very interested indeed and in no time - by pretending that fence-painting really is an art - he's got Ben painting the fence and Ben's prized apple in his hands.By the time Ben's tired out, Tom's already got a new mark lined up, and the process continues - Tom taking payment for the "privilege" of whitewashing - until, before too long, the fence is completely painted.Tom, well rested and considerably wealthier - wealthier, that is, if broken glass, old keys and one-eyed kittens constitute wealth. He heads back to report his good work to Aunt Polly.

The author considers generations of criticism spanning the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, along with new textual evidence showing how Twain's richly evocative style dissects Huck's conscience to propose humane amorality as a corrective to moral absolutes. Jim and Huck emerge as archetypal twins--biracial brothers who prefigure America's color-blind ideals.

Book excerpt: “This affectionate if somewhat irreverent homage would probably win a chuckle from Twain himself” as pals tumble into Tom Sawyer (School Library Journal). Sixth graders Devin and Frankie—short for Francine—are the greatest goof-offs in the history of their school. When their teacher tells them to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, they skip it. When there’s a surprise test on the novel, they hide. But when they accidentally drop the school’s prized Mark Twain autograph through the library’s magic metal detector, they find themselves transported to the world of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Soon these modern middle schoolers learn that being a troublemaker is timeless, as they whitewash a fence, run away from home, solve a murder mystery, become pirates, and search for hidden treasure along with Tom and Huck, the original slackers. “Reminiscent of Mary Pope Osborne’s ‘Magic Tree House’ series, but for an older audience,” the second book in Tony Abbott’s Cracked Classics series is a perfect introduction to Mark Twain for reluctant readers (School Library Journal).

Book excerpt: Tom Sawyer is a young boy living with his Aunt Polly on the banks of the Mississippi River. He seems to most enjoy getting into trouble. After missing school one day (and getting into a fight), Tom is punished with the task of whitewashing a fence. However, he turns the punishment into a bit of entertainment and tricks other boys to finish the work for him. He convinces the boys that the chore is a great honor, so he receives small, precious objects in payment. Around this time, Tom falls in love with a young girl, Becky Thatcher. He suffers under a whirlwind romance and engagement to her before she shuns him after she hears of Tom's previous engagement to Amy Lawrence. He tries to win Becky back, but it doesn't go well. She refuses a gift he tries to give her. Humiliated, Tom runs off and dreams up a plan to run away. It's around this time that Tom runs into Huckleberry Finn, who would be the titular character in Twain's next and most acclaimed novel. Huck and Tom agree to meet in the graveyard at midnight to test a scheme to cure warts involving a dead cat. The boys meet at the graveyard, which brings the novel to its pivotal scene when they witness a murder. Injun Joe kills Dr. Robinson and tries to blame it on the drunken Muff Porter. Injun Joe is unaware that the boys have seen what he's done.

Book excerpt: o Includes the authoritative texts for eleven pieces written between 1868 and 1902 o Publishes, for the first time, the complete text of "Villagers of 1840-3," Mark Twain's astounding feat of memory o Features a biographical directory and notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri Throughout his career, Mark Twain frequently turned for inspiration to memories of his youth in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. What has come to be known as the Matter of Hannibal inspired two of his most famous books, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and provided the basis for the eleven pieces reprinted here. Most of these selections (eight of them fiction and three of them autobiographical) were never completed, and all were left unpublished. Written between 1868 and 1902, they include a diverse assortment of adventures, satires, and reminiscences in which the characters of his own childhood and of his best-loved fiction, particularly Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, come alive again. The autobiographical recollections culminate in an astounding feat of memory titled "Villagers of 1840-3" in which the author, writing for himself alone at the age of sixty-one, recalls with humor and pathos the characters of some one hundred and fifty people from his childhood. Accompanied by notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri, the selections in this volume offer a revealing view of Mark Twain's varied and repeated attempts to give literary expression to the Matter of Hannibal.
