Download or read book I Never Had to Duck written by C. A. Peters and published by . This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging memoir, retired Pittsburgh public servant C.A. (Chuck) Peters tells the captivating story of his ardent, lifelong love of and undistinguished service in the United States Marine Corps. His affair started when he was a Junior Marine during World War Two in a little Ohio River town, continued through his commissioning as a second lieutenant in March of 1956 and discharge as a reserve captain in 1969. While attending Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, Peters endeavored to enlist in the Corps' Platoon Leaders Course only to be rejected for poor eyesight. A year later he tried again, and through a combination of chart memorization and lowered standards, he was accepted. After surviving the grueling twelve-week PLC selection process, Peters, in March 1956, reported to the Corps' six-month-long Basic School at Quantico, Virginia. Once there he muddled through and in October of 1956 joined the famed First Marine Division in California where he experienced peacetime active service with the Marines. He met his future wife and love of his life, Georgina Chamberlain, at Thiel College. They were wed in July of 1957, over the strenuous objections of both families, and remained happily married until her untimely death in December of 1999. I NEVER HAD TO DUCK reveals Peters' love of the Marine Corps through true stories of his adventures in the storied Corps. But he also weaves tales of friends and acquaintances who served as Marines who did have to duck.
Download or read book Moby-Duck written by Donovan Hohn and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by The New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of the Year A revelatory tale of science, adventure, and modern myth. When the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn's accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive world of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories. Moby-Duck is a journey into the heart of the sea and an adventure through science, myth, the global economy, and some of the worst weather imaginable. With each new discovery, Hohn learns of another loose thread, and with each successive chase, he comes closer to understanding where his castaway quarry comes from and where it goes. In the grand tradition of Tony Horwitz and David Quammen, Moby-Duck is a compulsively readable narrative of whimsy and curiosity.

Book Synopsis Buffalo Wings by : Charles A. Hobbie
Download or read book Buffalo Wings written by Charles A. Hobbie and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As World War II comes to an end in 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies in office. Throughout the country, the greatest generation mourns its leader. A spring snowstorm in Western New York inaugurates the cold war. Chuck Hobbie is just a boy, born on unlucky Friday, April 13th, but fortunate to be a child in Buffalo. As all Buffalonians know, it is not a dazzling city, unless the sparkle of winter snow and the shimmer of reflected summer lights from Erie and Niagara count. Likewise, the city's citizens, families, and teachers are unremarkable, unless resilience, friendships, and quiet, day-to-day hard work matter. Buffalo's children are not special at all, except that they were raised in Buffalo, amid the history of the Niagara Frontier, by people who cared for them and institutions that prepared them to fly. Buffalo's west side is where Chuck comes of age, but his childhood experiences range from there to New Hampshire's White Mountains, a farm in Lewiston, N.Y., Holloway Bay in Ontario, and Alaska's Brooks Range. Join Chuck as he recalls in Buffalo Wings the childhood family, friends, teachers, and experiences that shaped his life in the decades before the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
