A sequel, Mrs. Cliff's Yacht, was released in 1897. Stockton's tale of the adventures of Capt. Horn is a great read. It tells a gripping tale set in the world of the nineteenth century. The prejudices and unthinking harshness of man to man are mitigated by the author's subtle sarcasm towards these mores of his day. Early in the spring of the year 1884 the three-masted schooner Castor from San Francisco to Valparaiso was struck by a tornado off the coast of Peru. The storm which rose with frightful suddenness was of short duration but it left the Castor a helpless wreck. Her masts had snapped off and gone overboard her rudder-post had been shattered by falling wreckage and she was rolling in the trough of the sea with her floating masts and spars thumping and bumping her sides.

It begins: "Early in the spring of the year 1884, the three-masted schooner Castor, from San Francisco to Valparaiso, was struck by a tornado off the coast of Peru. The storm, which rose with frightful suddenness, was of short duration, but it left the Castor a helpless wreck. ... "The Castor was an American merchant-vessel, commanded by Captain Philip Horn, an experienced navigator of about thirty-five years of age. Besides a valuable cargo, she carried three passengers--two ladies and a boy. ... "But when the storm had passed, and the sky was clear, and the mad waves had subsided into a rolling swell, there seemed no reason to believe that any one on board the Castor would ever reach Valparaiso. The vessel had been badly strained by the wrenching of the masts, her sides had been battered by the floating wreckage, and she was taking in water rapidly. Fortunately, no one had been injured by the storm, ...." All of the row boats had been blown off of the ship, but the crew was able to retrieve two of them from the sea; and "...in less than three hours after the vessel had been struck, the two boats, containing all the crew and the passengers, besides a goodly quantity of provisions and water, and such valuables, clothing, rugs, and wraps as room could be found for, were pulling away from the wreck." The adventure thus begins, lost at sea somewhere off of the unsettled coast of Peru with only a vague idea of where they are. So don't wait! Scroll up and buy now.

In 1863, John Bozeman pioneered a route that connected Montana gold fields to the Oregon Trail. As the Civil War closed, the flow of emigrants turned into a flood, angering the Native Americans over this intrusion into their nomadic lands. The Lakota chief Red Cloud declared war. Here are the stories of the years when the dangerous Bozeman Trail was in use. From it's first wagon train to the closing of the forts that protected the route, some of the most storied pioneers of the west played a part. The legendary Jim Bridger and the Fetterman Fight are just part of the adventure. Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the migration that changed the country forever. Book excerpt: That Frank Grouard was an important figure in the history of the Indian wars of the Great Plains is beyond any doubt. Nor can there be the slightest doubt of Grouard's position among his fellows, including General George Crook, George Armstrong Custer, and Chicago Times correspondent, John Finerty. Six feet tall and 200 pounds of muscle, Grouard (also spelled Gruard) was well acquainted with Indian life. He knew Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and most of the Native American leaders. Having been captured by the Sioux, he spent years with them learning their language and ways, becoming accepted as one of their own. Returning to white society, he put what he knew to use as one of the greatest army scouts of the Old West. In the Great Sioux War of 1876, he was a scout for General Crook's Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition that was supposed to unite with Custer's Seventh Cavalry to bring the Sioux and Cheyenne into reservations. Grouard fought with Crook at the Battle of the Rosebud just eight days before Custer was wiped out by the same Indians under Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. By the time this book was written in 1894, Grouard was known all over the country. His exciting accounts of Indian life and the Indian Wars is a seminal contribution to our knowledge of the period. Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the events that changed the country forever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April, 1849, a little over six months before he was twenty-one, Kimball Webster caught the gold fever. Characteristic of his methodical ways, he kept a journal of his journey across the country and of his experiences as a miner in California and land surveyor in Oregon. His experiences in the Land of Gold is told in his own vivid language in these pages, and forms one of the most interesting narratives of the days of the gold-seekers of the Pacific Slope. Under trying circumstances that we can't fully appreciate today, the hardy men and women of the Gold Rush, the '49ers, faced danger from disease, accident, Native Americans, other miners, and most likely, poverty. Yet nearly 300,000 came to California to seek their fortune and tempt fate. Kimball Webster didn't strike it rich but went on to make a good life for himself. And he made us richer by leaving his account of those tumultuous years of the 1849 Gold Rush. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Don Quixote (illustrated & annotated) - The Unabridged Classic Ormsby" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. It is the version based on unabridged classic Ormsby translation, fully illustrated by Gustave Doré. Don Quixote, fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes, published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615. It follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, an hidalgo who reads so many chivalric novels that he decides to set out to revive chivalry, under the name Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthly wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood. Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra ( 1547 (assumed) – 22 April 1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright. His magnum opus, Don Quixote, considered to be the first modern European novel, is a classic of Western literature, and is regarded amongst the best works of fiction ever written. John Ormsby (1829–1895) was a nineteenth-century British translator. He is most famous for his 1885 English translation of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha, perhaps the most scholarly and accurate English translation of the novel up to that time. Ormsby's translation has seen more editions than any other nineteenth-century English version of the novel, having been included in the Heritage Book Club series of great novels, and in the famous Great Books of the Western World set.
