Under these circumstances, we of the twenty first century can read about them both, talk about them enthusiastically, but pretty much leave them both alone. Aquinas is one who regardless of your placement on your spiritual journey. Aquinas is the basis for so much of what we have come to regard as dogma. This work is essential to not only understanding Aquinas's other works, but also our own journey.
Book Synopsis The Sacred Writings of Archelaus (Annotated Edition) by : Archelaus
Download or read book The Sacred Writings of Archelaus (Annotated Edition) written by Archelaus and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Sacred Writings Of ..." provides you with the essential works among the Christian writings. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until medieval times. This volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life That the Acts of this Disputation constitute an authentic relic of antiquity seems well established by a variety of considerations. Epiphanius, for instance, writing about the year A.D. 376, makes certain excerpts from them which correspond satisfactorily with the extant Latin version. Socrates, again, whose Ecclesiastical History dates about 439, mentions these Acts, and acknowledges that he drew the materials for his account of the Manichaean heresy from them. The book itself, too, offers not a few evidences of its own antiquity and authenticity.
Book Synopsis The Early Church on Killing by : Ronald J. Sider
Download or read book The Early Church on Killing written by Ronald J. Sider and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the early church believe about killing? What was its view on abortion? How did it approach capital punishment and war? Noted theologian and bestselling author Ron Sider lets the testimony of the early church speak in the first of a three-volume series on biblical peacemaking. This book provides in English translation all extant data directly relevant to the witness of the early church until Constantine on killing. Primarily, it draws data from early church writings, but other evidence, such as archaeological finds and Roman writings, is included. Sider taps into current evangelical interest in how the early church informs contemporary life while presenting a thorough, comprehensive treatment on topics of perennial concern. The book includes brief introductions to every Christian writer cited and explanatory notes on many specific texts.

Book Synopsis The Rise of Bishops by : David W. T. Brattston
Download or read book The Rise of Bishops written by David W. T. Brattston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of Bishops reveals how Christian congregations, which were self-governing in the second and third centuries, became subject to the general supervision and direction of diocesan bishops and higher officeholders, thus ending their independence from outside the local parish. The New Testament says nothing about church government after the apostles. Thus, the question becomes “who replaced the apostles?” Local church congregations in the period between AD 100 to 300 appear to have been administered by bishops and deacons, and sometimes elders, all as congregational officeholders, with no superstructure above the congregation. Yet, the fourth century sees congregations governed in groups by a collective hierarchy, based on diocesan bishops. This book attributes most of the change to Constantine the Great and his immediate successors, motivated by desire for more efficient functioning and greater control by the emperors once the majority church was co-opted into the Roman state. Although bishops have long been key officials in the church, surprisingly little has been written in our time on how the framework for choosing and regulating them developed in early times. What little is available consists of journal articles rather than standalone publications. The Rise of Bishops helps close this gap.

Book Synopsis The Ante-Nicene Fathers by : Alexander Roberts
Download or read book The Ante-Nicene Fathers written by Alexander Roberts and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume VI of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find the writings of: Gregory Thaumaturgus Dionysius, pope of Alexandria Julius Africanus, a Christian historian who wrote a history of the world from Creation to 221 bishops Antolius of Constantinople, Archelaus of Carchar, and Peter of Alexandria Alexander of Cappadocia, bishop of Jerusalem until he was taken prisoner by the Romans Theognostus, Pierius, and Thenas of Alexandria Phileas, a philosopher from Thmuis Pamphilus, patron of the library at Caesarea Malchion, a rhetorician from Antioch Alexander, bishop of Alexandria, who drew up the Acts during the Council of Nicaea the martyr Methodius Arnobius, an early Christian apologist"

Book excerpt: Carl Sommer presents a popular study of the faith and life of the early Christians in the first two centuries after Christ. Using documentary evidence and archaeological records, Sommers reconstructs the lives of the early Christians in order to "introduce the treasures of early Christianity to a large number of modern readers". By studying how the early Christians believed and lived, we can learn many valuable lessons on what to avoid and what to strive for today. The Roman world had many facets that are strikingly similar to elements of modern life. Sommer's aim is to help the reader learn how to transform modern culture with the power of the Gospel as was first done in the centuries of the early Church.
