In a vertical cylindrical sewage tank, the apparatus takes the form Of a vertical rotating shaft carrying a pair of arms at its lower end. The shaft is hollow and compressed air is supplied through it to the arms, which are made Of perforated pipes or Of plain metal pipes carrying earthenware pipes. (these earthenware pipes are arranged concentrically around the metal pipes and spaced from them by distance pieces to provide an air passage. The earthenware pipe is porous prefer ably along one section Of its length only. In a rectangular tank the air diffusing pipes are supported at each end on wheels running along rails on the bottom Of the tank, or are suspended from arms supported on wheels on rails on the top Of the walls of the tank.
