Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Accoucheur's Vademecum, or Modern Guide to the Practice of Midwifery Really the author does not here speak from hyp0y thesis, for he has witnessed some very serious blun ders in the practice of Midwifery, evidently from the practitioner having adopted a partial code of notions capable of but limited application. In truth, it was the impression which such occurrences made on him that first led him to form a digest from various trust worthy authors of points but partially disposed of in books in common use. A hope that what he found of advantage to himself might prove beneficial to other practitioners has occasioned the present volume to appear in print. But it is unnecessary to enlarge further on this subject, for a cursory inspection will show that topics not afew are extensively treated of in the accoucheur's vadamecum, notwithstanding its limited price and size, which works on mid wifery of double its bulk, and far more than double its cost have either dismissed unnoticed, or in such a manner as to be productive of little satisfaction to the reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery Four years have passed since the last American edition was issued, and this period has worked a revolution in the results attained in sev eral forms of Obstetric surgery: notably is this the case in the Form Caesarean Operation; the conservative Caesarean operation; and the exsective method Of treating extra-uterine pregnancy where the foetus is alive and of Viable development. The Porro operation has fallen in its rate of mortality since 1884 from 58 to less than 20 per cent. And the Conservative or Improved Caesarean, from 45 per cent. To a general average of 20 per cent., and for Continental Europe of 12. The exsective Operation named had had but one case prior to 1885, but has now had five without the death of a mother. These facts are not mentioned in the last English edition. Laparo-elytrotomy, which was attracting considerable attention four years ago, has almost ceased to exist, by reason of the diminished death-rate under the improved Caesarean section, which in Germany has been one case lost In eight. Laparo-elytrotomy has therefore not been performed since September 18, 1887. The Editor has brought up the work to date upon these subjects, and their statistical records to the close of the year 1888. All Of the American additions, except the article upon the forceps, have been either rewritten or remodelled, and many new and short notes have been added where required. The work has been sufficientlv Americanized, upon the points Where English and American Obstetri cians differ in Opinion and practice, to fit it for the uses of American medical students and Obstetricians. All notes and additions have been distinguished by enclosure in brackets J. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Practice of Midwifery Contrary to the expectations of the Author, another edition of this work has been called for, and it has been thought expedient to compress it into one volume. Some corrections have of course been made, but not many additions, very few practical improvements having come to the khowledge of the Author since the publication of the former editions. It may be doubted whether any part of medicine has been more improved within the last sixty or seventy years than the practice of midwifery, by returning as it were from too much artifice to the sim plicity of nature, and by relying on the general efficacy of the powers of the constitution in overcoming the difficulties which occur in child-birth. I must, however, allow, that some improvements have been made in the treatment of women in child-birth after delivery, and perhaps in fixing with more precision the time when the interposition or assistance of art was required. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Art of Midwifery The third edition of this work, published in 1885, was intended to present to the reader a picture of the most advanced obstetrical teachings of that date. In the brief interval, however, that has elapsed since then the changes that have taken place in both the theory and practice of obstetrics have made it necessary for me to present to the profession what is essentially a new book. Thus many modifications in the theory have resulted from more careful observations in anatomy and pathology, and from fruitful physio logical investigations. It has been my endeavor to interweave aseptic precautions with all branches of obstetric art without, how ever, insisting upon pedantic measures which experience has shown to be needless. But the noblest conquests of the past years have been the result of the employment of modern surgery for the relief or removal of a host of complications formerly regarded as beyond the pale of human help. In making needed alterations I have not felt it obligatory when new discoveries have destroyed the value of former deductions to retain these in order to maintain a reputation for consistency. I thank the medical press and the medical profession of this country and Great Britain for the flattering welcome they have hitherto extended to this treatise, and trust that in its new form it may command a like degree of favor. For the preparation of the index special thanks are once more due to my friend Dr. W. H. Flint, whose painstaking accuracy will be evident to those who have occasion to consult these pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Midwifery, Vol. 1 There he began to study Midwifery under E. C. J. Von Siebold, and soon developed a strong liking for this department of Medicine. In 1852 he visited Vienna, and afterwards England, Scotland, and Ireland, in order to study the methods of procedure in the Lying-in Institutions of these countries. Shortly after his return to Gottingen he published(1858) an excellent Compendium of Midwifery, and in 1860 was appointed Professor Extraordinarius of Midvifery in the University. The following year he was called to Freiburg as Prof. Ordinarius, and two years afterwards(1864) removed to Konigsberg, which however he again quitted on being appointed(1865) Professor at Breslau. In 1870 in conjunction with Crede, S. started the Archiv fr Gynakologie, and throughout his life was a constant and valuable contributor. Meanwhile he was accumulating a large practice, which however did not prevent him from devoting much time to the great work with which his name is mainly associated, viz. the Lehrbuch der Geburtshulfe, of which the following pages are a translation. The Lehrbuch appeared in 1878, and became so popular that in 1880 and edition was called for, and S. was far advanced with its preparation at the time of his death. Symptoms of failing health appeared in the summer of 1880, but so great was S. 's enthusiasm for his work, that it was with difficulty that he could be persuaded to abandon it for a season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Theory and Practice of Midwifery These additions, together with the fact that the work has had the benefit of two revisions by the author since the publication of the last American edition, have caused a notable augmentation in the size of the volume, which at present contains fully one-half more matter than when last reprinted. This has rendered necessary the adoption of a smaller type, notwithstanding which the number of pages has been increased by nearly two hundred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery, Vol. 1 of 2 Many of the illustrations are copied from previous authors, while some are original. The following quotation from the preface to Tyler Smith's 'manual of Obstetrics will explain why the source of the copied woodcuts has not been in each instance acknowledged: 'when I began to publish, I determined to give the authority for every wood cut copied from other works. I soon found, however, that obstetric authors of all countries, from the time of Mauriceau downwards, had copied each other so freely without acknow ledgment as to render it difficult or impossible to trace the originals.' The Author has to express his acknowledgments to many friends for their kind assistance by the loan of illustra tions and otherwise, and more especially to his colleague. Dr. Hayes, for his valuable aid in passing the work through the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
