Download or read book Environmental Consequences of the Chernobyl Accident and Their Remediation written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2006 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the consequent reactor fire resulted in an unprecedented release of radioactive material from a nuclear reactor and adverse consequences for the public and the environment. Although the accident occurred nearly two decades ago, controversy still surrounds the real impact of the disaster. Therefore the IAEA, in cooperation with other UN bodies, the World Bank, as well as the competent authorities of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, established the Chernobyl Forum in 2003. The mission of the Forum was to generate 'authoritative consensual statements' on the environmental consequences and health effects attributable to radiation exposure arising from the accident as well as to provide advice on environmental remediation and special health care programmes, and to suggest areas in which further research is required. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Chernobyl Forum concerning the environmental effects of the Chernobyl accident.

This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This report comprises a report with two underpinning scientific annexes. The first annex recapitulates and clarifies the philosophy of science as well as the scientific knowledge for attributing observed health effects in individuals and populations to radiation exposure, and distinguishes between that and inferring risk to individuals and populations from an exposure. The second annex reviews the latest thinking and approaches to quantifying the uncertainties in assessments of risk from radiation exposure, and illustrates these approaches with application to examples that are highly pertinent to radiation protection.

Book Synopsis The Chernobyl Accident by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book The Chernobyl Accident written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The INIS Reference Series defines the rules, standards, formats, codes and authority lists on which the International Nuclear Information System is based. Over the years most manuals have been revised or merged, and further revisions will be issued in the future. The series consists of 10 current manuals, all of which are available in print, on microfiche and many in electronic form, as described below. The Thesaurus gives the Spanish translation of the controlled vocabulary to be used by INIS members to index the literature they report to INIS. This authority ensures consistent subject indexing. Revision 32 of the Spanish version contains 19 422 accepted terms (descriptors) and 6065 forbidden terms (non-descriptors). The terms are listed alphabetically in Spanish, followed by the English equivalent, and with each alphabetic entry a 'word block' containing all the terms associated with that particular entry is displayed.

Book Synopsis The Accident at Chernobyl and Its Implications for the Safety of CANDU Reactors by : Canada. Atomic Energy Control Board
Download or read book The Accident at Chernobyl and Its Implications for the Safety of CANDU Reactors written by Canada. Atomic Energy Control Board and published by The Board. This book was released on 1987 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atomic Energy Control Board is the agency of the Government of Canadawhich controls the development, application, and use of atomic energy, andparticipates on behalf of Canada in international measures of control. Immediately after the serious accident at the Chernobyl nuclear rectorcomplex in the Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic, the AECB attempted toobtain as much information as was available and to review the implications ofthe accident. A post-accident review meeting of nuclear power and radiationprotection specialists was convened by the International Atomic Energy Agencyin Vienna in August 1986. On the basis of the information presented at thatmeeting, the AECB carried out a study of the design of the Chernobyl reactor, the events which led to the accident, and its consequences. The causes ofthe accident were examined to ascertain whether they revealed anyshortcomings in the safety of CANDU reactors sequence. A list of errorsand violations of procedures at Chernobyl is included.

Book excerpt: The March 11, 2011, Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami sparked a humanitarian disaster in northeastern Japan. They were responsible for more than 15,900 deaths and 2,600 missing persons as well as physical infrastructure damages exceeding $200 billion. The earthquake and tsunami also initiated a severe nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Three of the six reactors at the plant sustained severe core damage and released hydrogen and radioactive materials. Explosion of the released hydrogen damaged three reactor buildings and impeded onsite emergency response efforts. The accident prompted widespread evacuations of local populations, large economic losses, and the eventual shutdown of all nuclear power plants in Japan. "Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for Improving Safety and Security of U.S. Nuclear Plants" is a study of the Fukushima Daiichi accident. This report examines the causes of the crisis, the performance of safety systems at the plant, and the responses of its operators following the earthquake and tsunami. The report then considers the lessons that can be learned and their implications for U.S. safety and storage of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste, commercial nuclear reactor safety and security regulations, and design improvements. "Lessons Learned" makes recommendations to improve plant systems, resources, and operator training to enable effective ad hoc responses to severe accidents. This report's recommendations to incorporate modern risk concepts into safety regulations and improve the nuclear safety culture will help the industry prepare for events that could challenge the design of plant structures and lead to a loss of critical safety functions. In providing a broad-scope, high-level examination of the accident, "Lessons Learned" is meant to complement earlier evaluations by industry and regulators. This in-depth review will be an essential resource for the nuclear power industry, policy makers, and anyone interested in the state of U.S. preparedness and response in the face of crisis situations.
