Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated second edition of Notable Twentieth-Century Scientists provides biographies of approximately 1,600 scientist in the natural, physical, and applied sciences, including astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, medicine, physics, technology, zoology, computer science, ecology, engineering, and environmental science. Entries highlight name, birth/death dates, nationality, and primary specialization; run from 400- 2500 words; list publications; and feature a section of further reading. All five volumes of the set begin with a list of entries and a chronology of major advances, and volume five ends with several indexes based on the scientist's specialization, gender, nationality/ethnicity, and subject. Over 400 scientists garner photographs. Diversity and internationalism are hallmarks of the set. Suitable for high school and college. c. Book News Inc.

Book Synopsis Long Acting Injections and Implants by : Jeremy C. Wright
Download or read book Long Acting Injections and Implants written by Jeremy C. Wright and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-29 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long acting injections and implants improve therapy, enhance patient compliance, improve dosing convenience, and are the most appropriate formulation choice for drugs that undergo extensive first pass metabolism or that exhibit poor oral bioavailability. An intriguing variety of technologies have been developed to provide long acting injections and implants. Many considerations need to go into the design of these systems in order to translate a concept from the lab bench to actual therapy for a patient. This book surveys and summarizes the field. Topics covered in Long Acting Injections and Implants include the historical development of the field, drugs, diseases and clinical applications for long acting injections and implants, anatomy and physiology for these systems, specific injectable technologies (including lipophilic solutions, aqueous suspensions, microspheres, liposomes, in situ forming depots and self-assembling lipid formulations), specific implantable technologies (including osmotic implants, drug eluting stents and microfabricated systems), peptide, protein and vaccine delivery, sterilization, drug release testing and regulatory aspects of long acting injections and implants. This volume provides essential information for experienced development professionals but was also written to be useful for scientists just beginning work in the field and for others who need an understanding of long acting injections and implants. This book will also be ideal as a graduate textbook.

Book Synopsis Neuroparasitology and Tropical Neurology by : Oscar H. Del Brutto
Download or read book Neuroparasitology and Tropical Neurology written by Oscar H. Del Brutto and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cysticercosis, an infection caused by the cystic larvae of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium, is one of the most frequent parasitic infections of the human nervous system (neurocysticercosis). It is endemic in most of Latin America, the sub-Saharan Africa, and vast parts of Asia, including the Indian subcontinent. It has also been increasingly diagnosed in developed countries because of migration of people from endemic zones and exposure in travelers. The life cycle involves the development of the adult tapeworm in the human small intestine (after ingesting infected pork with cysts) and larval infection in pig tissues (after ingesting human stools containing the eggs of the tapeworm). Humans get infected by the fecal-oral route, most often from a direct contact with an asymptomatic Taenia carrier. Most common clinical presentations are seizures (particularly late-onset seizures), chronic headaches, and intracranial hypertension. However, cysticerci can locate anywhere in the human nervous system, thus potentially causing almost any neurological syndrome and making clinical diagnosis a difficult task. Neuroimaging is the main diagnostic tool, and specific serology confirms the diagnosis and helps to define the diagnosis when images are unclear. Factors such as location (extraparenchymal versus intraparenchymal), number, size and evolutive stage of the parasites determine the clinical manifestations, therapeutic approach, and prognosis. Management includes symptomatic drugs (analgesics, antiepileptic drugs, anti-inflammatory agents) and in many cases cysticidal drugs, either albendazole or praziquantel. In recent years, efforts have focused on transmission control and potential elimination in endemic regions.

Book Synopsis Molecular Allergy Diagnostics by : Jörg Kleine-Tebbe
Download or read book Molecular Allergy Diagnostics written by Jörg Kleine-Tebbe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on a recent German publication, offers an overview of basic data and recent developments in the groundbreaking field of molecular allergology. It comprehensively explores the origin and structure of single allergen molecules ("components") and their utility in improving the management of type I, IgE-mediated allergic reactions and disorders like allergic respiratory diseases, food allergies, and anaphylaxis. Highly specific testing, called component-resolved diagnostics, aims to identify and utilize single molecules. Over 200 single allergens from plant or animal sources have been applied to single or multiplex laboratory testing for the presence of allergen-specific IgE. This leap in assay sensitivity and specificity has led to three major advances in patient management: discrimination between primary allergic sensitization and complex cross-reactivity, recognition of IgE profiles for certain allergens and identification of patients most likely to benefit from allergen-specific immunotherapy. The book discusses in detail the benefits and limitations of this 21st century technology, and offers suggestions for the use of molecular allergology in routine clinical practice. It is a “must read” for physicians treating allergic patients as well as scientists interested in natural allergic molecules and their interactions with the human immune system.
