Book excerpt: Three novels from a New York Times–bestselling author: an exhilarating adventure that follows a group of human castaways stranded on an icy alien planet. Icy, desolate, and sharply carved by hurricane-force winds, Tran-ky-ky is a terrible place to crash-land. But a botched kidnapping aboard the interstellar transport Antares sends Ethan Frome Fortune and a handful of his fellow travelers tumbling toward the stormy planet. Stranded and cut off from civilization, the castaways struggle to survive. In this page-turning trilogy, Fortune confronts vicious predators (even the plants want to make a meal of him) and forges an alliance with a native Tran. As he searches for a way off Tran-ky-ky, he helps the Tran gain admission to the Humanx Commonwealth and learns about their troubled history. Just as Fortune accepts that he’ll never escape the harsh planet and acclimates to its relentless winter, he learns that scientists have detected rising temperatures in the atmosphere. This sinister change leads Fortune to a thrilling and unexpected final adventure.

Book excerpt: This book explores in depth Ikpu-ala as a social justice value in the Igbo social justice system. The traditional social justice concept of ikpu-ala provides an important conceptual framework through which adult Igbo Christians can engage in a critical and conscious theological reflections upon how they can make the Igbo Christian community fully authentic and faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is a process that will highlight the total transformation of the Igbo society, which began with the arrival of the missionaries in 1885. This reflection is based on the Igbo experience and understanding of Omenala, the Igbo moral code, in which the world of the material and the spiritual, while occupying distinct domains, nonetheless remain deeply intertwined. In this book, the author explores that for the Igbo community, the reality of theology has evolved as a distinct from of experience that is deeply connected with tradition for the sake of praxis (Don Browning, 1995). Consequently, the author not only sees Ikpu-ala as authentic Igbo social justice value but also considers it as something that can be integrated into the Christian social values without either destroying Igbos longstanding cultures or traditions. The author highlights two key lessons from the Igbo integration of ikpu-ala into Christian social justice: (1) that the Igbo Catholic Church should engage the Igbo culture and traditions in a theological interactive reflections for the incarnation of the Word among the Igbo Catholics, and (2) that Ikpu-ala, with its theological values, can assist the Igbo Catholic Church in the sacrament of reconciliation and so transform the twenty- first century Igbo Catholic into an integrated and authentic Christian.

Book excerpt: In this triumphant return to Pern, Anne McCaffrey takes us on an adventure as surprising and unforgettable as any that has come before . . . It is a time of hope and regret, of endings and beginnings. The Red Star, that celestial curse whose eccentric orbit was responsible for Thread, has been shifted to a harmless orbit, and the current Threadfall will be the last. Technological marvels are changing the face of life on Pern. And the dragonriders, led by F'lessan, son of F'lar and Lessa and rider of bronze Golanth, and Tia, rider of green Zaranth, must forge a new place for themselves in a world that may no longer need them. But change is not easy for everyone. There are those who will stop at nothing—not even violence—to keep Pern and its people pure. And now a brand-new danger looms from the skies . . . and threatens a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions. Once again, the world looks to the dragons and their riders to solve the crisis and save the world. But now, as the friendship of F'lessan and Tia begins to bloom into something more, unforeseen tragedy strikes: a tragedy destined to forever change the future—not just of the two young lovers, but of every human and dragon on Pern . . .

We dont know what God and Christ desperately want us to know. The truth is in Scripture, and the keys to unlocking the secrets are available to this generation. This book will open your eyes to unbelievable truths. The story is so fantastic that it eclipses fiction, and much of what we have discovered flies in the face of inherited beliefs. We must be prepared to consider Scripture confirmed by history, current events, and new scientific discoveries. Gods holy day memorial commands and observances detail what has happened and what will surely happen again. The news is good for believers and those who are willing follow a simplified plan to understand what your Bible has to say about Gods purpose to save all mankind. Somehow, we have lost our way, and the secret is hidden in plain sight. It is in your Bible, but roadblocks have crept into our interpretations and our understanding that frustrate the efforts of what God and Christ have to say. Once you begin to challenge yourself to dig deeper, you will see and understand more of what God would have you know. There are signs and wonders in Scripture, in memorial observances, and in the heavens that will open your eyes to fantastic events around us right now.

Book excerpt: Jareth Sykr, President and technical lead of Sykrcorp, is a lone technological visionary in a galaxy of technological stagnation and industrial ruin. The Society for Ethical Development, led by anti-technology zealots since its inception following the past great galactic war, has ensured that the galactic infrastructure and will to conceive and implement technology has been lost to the past. Jareth Sykr has forsaken the ways of the Society and seeks to recover and understand lost ancient technology. He and his team of archeo-technologists and engineers uncover lost technologies from across the span of ages and space. Galactic clients increasingly see the benefits of his recovered and re-engineered technologies, and Sykrcorp grows as an increasing threat to the power of the Society. Society supported assassins and mercenaries seek to destroy Jareth and his corporation before they can further corrupt the galaxy. As the galaxy struggles with its stagnation, an overwhelming threat rains down upon it from across the extra-galactic void. A galactic emperor, unsatisfied with his domain, leads his armada of planet-ships to capture the ill-prepared galaxy, which is a realm he finds more to his liking.

Brueggemann discusses both the distinctiveness of the texts and their canonical relatedness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original work caps years of thought by Leonard Krieger about the crisis of the discipline of history. His mission is to restore history's autonomy while attacking the sources of its erosion in various "new histories," which borrow their principles and methods from disciplines outside of history. Krieger justifies the discipline through an analysis of the foundations on which various generations of historians have tried to establish the coherence of their subject matter and of the convergence of historical patterns. The heart of Krieger's narrative is an insightful analysis of theories of history from the classical period to the present, with a principal focus on the modern period. Krieger's exposition covers such figures as Ranke, Hegel, Comte, Marx, Acton, Troeltsch, Spengler, Braudel, and Foucault, among others, and his discussion involves him in subtle distinctions among terms such as historism, historicism, and historicity. He points to the impact on history of academic political radicalism and its results: the new social history. Krieger argues for the autonomy of historical principles and methods while tracing the importation in the modern period of external principles for historical coherence. Time's Reasons is a profound attempt to rejuvenate and restore integrity to the discipline of history by one of the leading masters of nineteenth- and twentieth-century historiography. As such, it will be required reading for all historiographers and intellectual historians of the modern period.
