Download or read book The A to Z of Slovakia written by Stanislav J. Kirschbaum and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The A to Z of Slovakia offers an up to date series of cross-referenced dictionary entries on Slovak political, social, and economic development since the creation of the second Slovak Republic in 1993 until its admission into the European Union in 2004. It includes all of the political actors: the presidents, prime ministers, and party leaders, and many leading academics and cultural personalities, including those from the national minorities. It also contains entries on the various institutions of the Slovak Republic like the judiciary, the armed forces, the media, and parliamentary committees as well as entries that explain Slovakia's position and role in international organizations like NATO and the European Union. The historical survey explains how Slovakia, in its post-Communist transformation, was almost excluded, but in the end became a full member of these two institutions.
Book Synopsis Svinia in Black and White by : David Z. Scheffel
Download or read book Svinia in Black and White written by David Z. Scheffel and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roma—or Gypsies as some people still call them—constitute Europe's largest, poorest, and most enigmatic minority. In spite of their centuries-long coexistence with mainstream Europeans, our picture of this people remains rooted in stereotypes and myths that have little in common with contemporary social reality. Full-fledged citizens of the European Union, and ostensibly protected by the world's most progressive human rights legislation, many Roma live under conditions that challenge our notions of Europe, modernity, and pluralism. This book is about a Romani settlement in eastern Slovakia. It is a community that has grown to become one of the largest and most problematic townships of rural Roma in the entire district. The dark-skinned squatters on the margins of Svinia are segregated from the surrounding society by means of physical and social barriers entrenched in local ideology and enforced by rules and conventions reminiscent of apartheid. David Scheffel offers a detailed ethnographic account of the social, cultural, and historical circumstances that have encouraged and supported inter-ethnic inequality in the region. In the process, he demonstrates the complexity of what is often referred to as Europe's "Gypsy problem" with passion and sensitivity.

Book Synopsis Poland and Slovakia: Bilateral Relations in a Multilateral Context (2004–2016) by : Joanna Dyduch
Download or read book Poland and Slovakia: Bilateral Relations in a Multilateral Context (2004–2016) written by Joanna Dyduch and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the complex relations between the Republic of Poland and the Slovak Republic in the context of ongoing processes in the European Union’s political and economic system. The basic assumption of the study is that Polish-Slovak relations are affected and shaped not only by the interaction between the two of them but also by the dynamics of the European and global international environment. The authors explore different aspects of the interconnectedness of Warsaw and Bratislava. This includes the analysis of political, economic, and social dimensions of bilateral relations in the multilateral context. One of the goals of this volume is to define areas and spheres of Poland’s and Slovakia’s common interest, as well as to point out those areas with the highest potential for development. It also defines and analyzes problematic issues in common relations that could be seen as obstacles in developing cooperation in specific areas and politically strategic areas like foreign and security policy. Moreover, the book seeks to measure the extent to which Polish-Slovak relations are affected by the European integration process.

Book Synopsis Green Roofs and Water Retention in Košice, Slovakia by : Zuzana Poórová
Download or read book Green Roofs and Water Retention in Košice, Slovakia written by Zuzana Poórová and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how climate change and heat islands are a main contributor to water related problems in urban areas in Košice, Slovakia. Green roofs are used as a tool to assist in solving these water related issues. The need to provide housing in urban areas is expected to rise to 66% in 2050, according to the United Nations. Many urban areas have seen natural permeable green areas replaced with concrete constructions and hard, non-permeable surfaces. The densification of existing built-up areas is responsible for the decreasing vegetation, which results in the lack of evapotranspiration cooling the air, thereby creating urban heat islands. Several studies, discussed in this book, have shown that natural and permeable surfaces, as in the case of green roofs, can play a crucial role in mitigating this negative climate phenomenon and providing higher efficiency for buildings, leading to savings such as water, one of the focal points of this research.

Book Synopsis Slovakian and Bulgarian Aces of World War 2 by : Jiri Rajlich
Download or read book Slovakian and Bulgarian Aces of World War 2 written by Jiri Rajlich and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, Slovakia signed a protection agreement with the German Reich and joined the attack on Poland, where its Avia B-534-equipped fighter squadrons claimed their first kills. In October 1942, having made do with obsolete aircraft, the Slovaks were equipped with Bf 109Es and eventually acquired 43 Messerschmitt fighters. The Slovaks would claim over 215 kills. Although it supported German efforts in Yugoslavia and Greece, Bulgaria did not declare war on Russia. First seeing action in August 1943, Bulgarian fighter pilots used their Bf 109Gs to good effect. From late 1943 through to mid-1944, the Bulgarian pilots attempted to defend the country from American bombers, and Stoyanov and Bochev made ace during this period.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Use of Soils and Water by : Fernando António Leal Pacheco
Download or read book Sustainable Use of Soils and Water written by Fernando António Leal Pacheco and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on the sustainable use of soils and water addressed a variety of issues related to the utopian desire for environmental sustainability and the deviations from this scene observed in the real world. Competing interests for land are frequently a factor in land degradation, especially where the adopted land uses do not conform with the land capability (the natural use of soil). The concerns of researchers about these matters are presented in the articles comprising this Special Issue book. Various approaches were used to assess the (im)balance between economic profit and environmental conservation in various regions, in addition to potential routes to bring landscapes back to a sustainable status being disclosed.
