Onward to the fourteenth century ad. It was a continuous source of inspiration to the Far East and proved an intermittent stimulus to Western art. India's power of artistic colonisation is equal to that of Greece. Almost simultaneously these two centres of civilisation which stand for the fusion of Aryan and non-aryan elements sent forth their traditions which mingled without any resistance with the indigenous arts and crafts of any country they came to. Greece, before its fatal end, had extended its artistic dominion over Asia Minor and Italy. After its death Rome became the heir and colonized the whole of Europe, the north of Africa, Minor and Central Asia and the Far East. The Indian and the Hellenistic tradition thus were for sixteen centuries rival missionaries promulgating their artistic creed over the surface of the whole world known to those ages. The equally great success of these antagonistic efforts is striking. The two mother countries India and Greece, both peninsular, both in the south of a continent had independently evolved their art, though their remote Aryan unity left traces in either. From these two roots art grew up in two Vigorous stems which got full, growth in their own soil and spread their branches heavy with fruits to sunrise and sunset and the twigs crossed each other and formed a bewilder ing thicket. But wherever their fruits dropped the new seedlings bore the unmistakable features of the mother stem and the profuse crop which thus grew on the ground of the multifarious traditions outside India and outside Greece is called Medieval art in Europe and Asiatic art in the East. Medieval European and Asiatic art, therefore, are the syncretistic periods and regions of art, while Greece and India and similarly Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Far East are the creative centres. I have never before spelled them according to the official system, but have been forced under various compulsions to submit more or less completely to it. On the present occasion. I have given up Sir Charles Napier's Scinde, but I have not been able to give up Moore's Cashmere. Whoever heard of the vale of Kashmir It has been very confusing to me to give up the Old oo's and ee's for the new a's and-i's, which latter render it impossible for common English people to understand anything like the 'true pronunciation of Indian names. It is impossible for English people to pronounce P-u-n-a as Poona, N-i-r-a as Neera, S-h-i-r-p-u-r as Shere pore, or D-a-m - D-a - m as dum-dum.' Even if the natives of India adopted the Roman alphabet we ought not to spell modern Indian geographical names as they naturally would, if our first object is to preserve the proper pronunciation of them: for let it be clearly understood that by the official system of spelling, we are degrad ing their pronunciation. I saw Kurnool the other day rhymed to skull, simply because the writer of the poem, himself an accomplished Orientalist, had been, in a heed less moment, misled by the official spelling of the word Karnul. English is English, and the spelling of English words should be left to be settled, by popular English usage, and no attempt should be made to regulate it by arbitrary resolutions of government. And yet, for the student of Far Eastern art - and particularly of Chinese Buddhist art, it possesses, apart from its intrinsic importance, all the significance of an art of origins. Unfortunately but little of the monu mental sculpture of India is to be found outside the limits of India itself Buddhist and even Hindu sculptures are rarely seen, while the great paintings of Aj anta, almost unique in India, being preserved on the rock walls of the elevated temples will always demand the pil grimage of the connoisseur who would become acquainted with them. All the more important, for these reasons, are the collections of Indian works of art which the great museums - Indian departments have lately been established in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and in Philadelphia - are now be ginning to bring together, and the exhibitions of collections, such as Mr. Kevorkian's. It is now perhaps for the first time that an exhibi tion of purely Indian art has been attempted in New York; and it is fortunate that this should include not merely a series of Mughal paintings, but also more than one unusually important example of religious sculpture, and a number of those paintings, called Rajput, in which the older tradition of Aj anta survives with surprising vitality. The recent developments of Western art have made possible a far more serious appreciation of these works than could have been ao corded twenty years ago. We have come to understand that art is an expression of the inner life of a race - that beauty is something more than taste and something higher than prettiness - and that the repre sentative element, the mere power of illustration, informing us of the appearance of things in a scientific manner, where it is present in great art is present only incidentally, and not essentially. Truth in art is truth of feeling, psychological truth, and not a truth of veri similitude. Behind a great traditional art are the ideas which con stitute its true necessity: beauty is revealed in the co-extension of form and content, and it matters not to the lover of beauty what those ideas may have been. And so, as we said, the way has been made easy for an appreciation of an intellectual and lyrical art - the sculp tured figure with its many arms, representing a synthetic and sym phonic personality, and the paintiglg that depends for its expressionon linear rhythms and essential symbols, to the exclusion of preoccu pation with the cast shadow and the modelling of masses. It is true that to fully understand the art of India, or any other art, we must place ourselves at the point of view of the artist, and this demands of the modern industrialist, whose sense of the immediacy of the spirit is all too faint, a considerable efiort: but it is also true that those that approach the unfamiliar art, even without an intellectual knowledge of its themes, if they will permit themselves to feel its moods, to yield to it as one yields to the moods of nature and of human and spiritual emotion, will find themselves at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddhist Art in India The first edition of Professor Albert Grunwedel's handbook on Buddhistische Kunst in Indien appeared in 1893, and the hope was expressed in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society that the work might appear in English, as "it ought to be in the hands of all antiquarians in India." Believing that so important a publication might, by a few additions, form a useful general guide to the Buddhist sculptures in the museums alike of India and Europe, I have prepared the present edition. Miss A. C. Gibson very kindly translated for me the first edition; but by the time it was ready for the press, Prof. Grunwedel had begun his second edition containing extensive additions and alterations. This involved delay and a revision of the whole MS. Considerable additions have also been made to this translation, which have, partly at least, been indicated, and about fifty illustrations are added. The difficulties in interpreting the Gandhara Buddhist sculptures arise chiefly from their fragmentary and unconnected condition. This has been lamentably increased by the ignorance or disregard of scientific methods on the part of the excavators of these remains. Monasteries and stupas were dug into and demolished without regard to what might be learnt in the process by modern methods; the more complete fragments only were saved, without note of their relative positions or any attempt to recover smaller portions and chips by which they might have been pieced together; and the spoils were sent to various museums, often without mention of the sites from which they emanated.
