Download or read book The 54th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron written by George A. Larson and published by Schiffer Military History. This book was released on 2017 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the 54th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, including a brief history of its predecessor the 54th Fighter Squadron which was active in World War II. Because the mission of the 54th FIS involved nuclear weapons, even in 2015 the majority of the official Air Force unit records were still treated as classified, although they had been officially declassified in November 1978. The author's primary source of information for this history was from content provided directly to him by former members of the 54th FIS who wanted the story of their fighter unit told. Most of this material was previously determined non-existent.

Book Synopsis Alaska Warbird Survivors 2002 by : Harold A Skaarup
Download or read book Alaska Warbird Survivors 2002 written by Harold A Skaarup and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in the state of Alaska. The majority of the “Alaska Warbird Survivors” can be viewed at Elmendorf AFB; Eielson AFB; Kulis ANG Base; in the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum in Anchorage; in the Alaskaland Pioneer Air Museum in Fairbanks; Healy, Denali Wings; and at Palmer, in the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry. Various “gate guardians” are also listed. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations in Alaska have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of American combat veteran aircraft, illustrated here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites in the bush and restored, traded or brought back from private owners, that they too will be added to the record. The book lists the aircraft alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently on display within the state and a bit of its history in the US military.

This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Dakota Air National Guard's 114th Fighter Wing's history began during World War II with the 356th Fighter Group. It became a post-World War II Air Guard unit, initially flying the North American F-51D Mustang removed from storage as the active duty Air Force began transitioning to turbojet fighters. It was slowly upgraded to turbojet aircraft, first with the T-33 trainer to assist pilots into to the F-94 Starfighter. One of the most dramatic upgrades was with the F-89D Norhtrop Scorpion, which had onboard radar for all-weather interception, and the F-89J, armed with the nuclear warhead Genie rockets to shoot down Russian bombers. Its first supersonic fighter was the Convair F-102A Delta Dagger, a delta-wing fighter. The wing continued to transition through various turbojet fighters to the current General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon from 1992 to the present. The unit is fully integrated into the US Air Force's aerial defense of the United States and the Global War on Terrorism.
Book Synopsis We Have Capture by : Thomas P. Stafford
Download or read book We Have Capture written by Thomas P. Stafford and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What an amazing career. Tom Stafford attained the highest speed ever reached by a test pilot (28,547 mph), carried a cosmonaut’s coffin with Soviet Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, led the team that designed the sequence of missions leading to the original lunar landing, and drafted the original specifications for the B-2 stealth bomber on a piece of hotel stationery. But his crowning achievement was surely his role as America’s unofficial space ambassador to the Soviet Union during the darkest days of the Cold War. In this lively memoir written with Michael Cassutt, Stafford begins by recounting his early successes as a test pilot, Gemini and Apollo astronaut, and USAF general. As President Nixon's stand-in at the 1971 Soviet funeral for three cosmonauts, he opened the door to the possibility of cooperation in space between Russians and Americans. Stafford's Apollo-Soyuz team was the first group of Americans to work at the cosmonaut training center, and also the first to visit Baikonur, the top-secret Soviet launch center, in 1974. His 17 July 1975 “handshake in space” with Soviet commander Alexei Leonov (who became a lifelong friend) proved to the world that the two opposing countries could indeed work successfully together. Stafford has continued in this leadership role right up to the present, participating in designing and evaluating the Space Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space Station. He is truly an American hero who personifies the broadest spirit of exploration and cooperation.

Book excerpt: This project began several years ago as a simple family history and legacy to leave to my sons and grandchildren. Every family and generation has their unique stories to share. It’s sad but true that many of these stories are lost as the participants die. We have all heard about the same old stories from the family’s older folks many times and got bored with the reruns of some. I hope to preserve these tales and histories. Perhaps a harsher example is the loss of the Holocaust survivors’ oral histories and the World War II veterans’ stories in history.
