Book excerpt: The "Index to Dance Periodicals," prepared by the staff of the Dance Division of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, indexes current periodical literature on dance and dance-related topics. This "Index" provides easy access for the scholar, student, performer and general interest researcher. From professional to artistic, from scholarly to popular, the articles represent a multitude of topics and issues illustrating the present diversity of the dance field, and are international in scope. Although most of the thousands of articles in each annual volume are in English, three foreign language periodicals have also been indexed. The "Index to Dance Periodicals" supplements the annual "Bibliographic Guide to Dance," which lists bibliographic citations to all forms of materials, including rare treatises and visual materials, cataloged each year by the Dance Division of New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The entire catalog of the Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is cumulated each year in G.K. Hall's annual CD-ROM, "Dance on Disc," which contains more than 200,000 catalog entries, representing all forms of materials. Also, "Dance on Disc" now contains the Dance Division authority file of 165,996 standardized forms of proper names for people, dance companies, titles of choreographic works and subjects. The authority file includes cross-references, clarifying notes, and first performance information for staged choreographed works, including location, date, choreographer, other credits and dance company. Periodicals indexed include: "American Journal of Dance Therapy Attitude: The Dancers? Magazine BalletReview Ballett International/Tanz Aktuell [English edition] Ballett-Journal/Das Tanzarchiv Brolga: an Australian Journal about Dance Choreography and dance Contact Quarterly Current Biography Yearbook" (Occasionally indexed for articles pertinent to the dance field) "Dance Australia Dance Chronicle Dance Europe Dance International Dance Magazine Dance Research (London) Dance Research Journal Dance Teacher (Formerly Dance Teacher Now) Dance Theatre Journal Dancing Times Danser Skating Tanzdrama Magazine "

Book excerpt: In the United States, broad study in an array of different disciplines â€"arts, humanities, science, mathematics, engineeringâ€" as well as an in-depth study within a special area of interest, have been defining characteristics of a higher education. But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century. Researchers in all academic disciplines have been able to delve more deeply into their areas of expertise, grappling with ever more specialized and fundamental problems. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary "silos". These "silos" represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time. The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education examines the evidence behind the assertion that educational programs that mutually integrate learning experiences in the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) lead to improved educational and career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students. It explores evidence regarding the value of integrating more STEMM curricula and labs into the academic programs of students majoring in the humanities and arts and evidence regarding the value of integrating curricula and experiences in the arts and humanities into college and university STEMM education programs.

Book excerpt: Since 2011, Watershed Cairns® artists Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan have collaborated to depict the bountiful land and water of the Mississippi River basin and to express the ways that we use or abuse these vital resources. They travel on roads near the rivers, stopping to place and photograph Reuter's sculptures, or cairns. Reuter's cairns are inspired by the rocks that hikers stack to mark a trail, or as a memorial. But, her material isn't rock. She assembles household glass from local thrift stores to make these fragile watershed markers. Each cairn is strategically positioned in some of the most compelling and unexpected sites along the great rivers. The locations are chosen to comment on the condition or history of the land and water at that place. The cairns also mark the watersheds metaphorically as fragile, beautiful, and deeply connected to everyday life. After Rowan photographs them, the location is recorded, and the cairns are removed and stored for later exhibits alongside the luminous large-scale, color photographs. Each image is identified by its physical address, its latitude and longitude, and details about the watershed at that location.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presentations of war and violence in museums generally oscillate between the fascination of terror and its instruments and the didactic urge to explain violence and, by analysing it, make it easier to handle and prevent. The museums concerned also have to face up to these basic issues about the social and institutional handling of war and violence. Does war really belong in museums? And if it does, what objectives and means are involved? Can museums avoid trivializing and aestheticising war, transforming violence, injury, death and trauma into tourist sights? What images of shock or identification does one generate - and what images would be desirable?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major book to consider the life and work of Robert Arneson, A Troublesome Subject tells the fascinating story of how a high school art teacher transformed himself into an artist of international stature and ambition. Representing the full scope of ArnesonÕs career in a rich survey of color reproductions, this book is at once a study of the trajectory of contemporary culture, the work of Robert Arneson, and the relationship between the two. It shows how ArnesonÕs work articulated the crisis of narcissism that has defined American culture since 1970. Jonathan Fineberg develops his ongoing work toward a psychosocial history of art as he proceeds through ArnesonÕs careerÑchronicling his early life, the formation of a personal style, and finding a unique subject matter in his famous post-1970 turn to self-portraiture.

Book excerpt: "The realization that children have their own type of childish creativity and the potential to express themselves through art was a crucial driving force in Paul Klee's own creative work: from pieces displaying the spontaneous texture of finger painting to his Dada-esque puppets made of found materials. Animated by Klee, after World War II painters from the group of artists known as CoBrA in turn lighted on the child's visual world as a source of inspiration for their new, revolutionary artistic departure. This publication sheds light on the little known history of the reception of Klee by CoBrA artists Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, and others. In a dialogue and confrontation with the eruptive works of the CoBrA artists, we see Klee's oeuvre from a new, surprisingly wild side. The visual exchange is marked by expressivity and divided into thematic fields, such as play and mischief, imaginary worlds of animals and plants, or grotesque faces and masks."--Publisher's website.
