Book Synopsis The 28th Signal Company in World War II by : Robert W. Cronenweth
Download or read book The 28th Signal Company in World War II written by Robert W. Cronenweth and published by Trafford. This book was released on 2004 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the 28th Signal Company covers the activities of the unit from 1936 through 1945. It contains personal anecdotes, recollections and photographs of Company veterans from the World War II period, as well as reports from a wide range of military and civilian sources. Because the Signal Company moved with the Division Headquarters, this account also includes much information about the 28th Infantry Division itself. Of particular interest to historians and researchers is a highly original examination of the events that led to The Battle of the Bulge. Based on declassifi ed secret information as well as personal accounts, this controversial and compelling analysis explains how The Bulge was not a "surprise attack" - but rather the springing of a carefully laid trap by Generals Eisenhower and Bradley to draw the Germans out from behind the heavily fortified Sigfried Line and engage them in the open. Also published here for the first time are the personal experiences of individual Bulge survivors recounting the opening days of the battle. With orders TO HOLD AT ALL COSTS, the men of the 28th Infantry Division stalled an overwhelmingly superior German force for three days, enabling the 101st Airborne Division to move into Bastogne. The author, Robert W. Cronenweth, served over a period of twenty-eight years in the 28th Signal Company and 28th Signal Battalion in grades from Private to Lieutenant Colonel.

Book Synopsis American Signal Intelligence in Northwest Africa and Western Europe by : George Howe
Download or read book American Signal Intelligence in Northwest Africa and Western Europe written by George Howe and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume at hand, Dr. George F. Howe's American Signals Intelligence in Northwest Africa and Western Europe is important professional reading for those interested in cryptologic history or in World War II. Dr. Howe's book deals primarily with organizational matters for providing SIGINT support in combat. Thus, the reader will not find stories of high-level cryptanalysis underlying big decisions by famous leaders. In my estimation, by concentrating on the less flashy aspects of wartime support in favor of the background work, Dr. Howe has again added a dimension of great worth to our knowledge of SIGINT and of the war. The study of World War II SIGINT has concentrated, by and large, on ULTRA, the exploitation of high-grade cryptographic systems used by Germany and Japan, and the use of ULTRA material by senior wartime decision makers. This effort unquestionably is important for understanding the decisions and events of that terrible era, but the overwhelming focus on this aspect has resulted in a slightly skewed understanding. The production of ULTRA and its effective use depended on a strong and well-organized structure working in conjunction with now-legendary cryptanalysts. Since the distribution of ULTRA was limited to a small number of officers and civilian leaders, the bulk of SIGINT support to the warfighter cam from tactical SIGINT units working at or near the front lines. This is an important subject for understanding what happened in World War II and for studying the principles of SIGINT organization today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this volume Dr. Thompson and Mrs. Harris conclude the story of U.S. Army Signal Corps operations in World War II. The Outcome is largely a success story, as it picks up in 1943 and carries on past V-J Day. Of all the technical services, the Signal Corps was least prepared for war in 1941. But by mid-war the Corps was operating efficiently at home and all over the world. Even so, there were always difficulties to be overcome. Further, other agencies conducted feuds and raids. The Army Air Forces, though using Signal Corps equipment through the end of the war, was never satisfied with it. The authors have told the story with candor. The point of view is that of the Signal Corps, but the range of subject matter should prove interesting and instructive to military men and to students of both technology and public administration.

This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 53 photos/illustrations and 11 maps] The defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II is one of the supreme achievements of American arms. Bastogne is deservedly identified with the finest characteristics of the American soldier, and the name Bastogne symbolizes a heroic battle. Bastogne has long held the attention of students of war, yet the battle offers new insights for soldiers with modern concerns. Colonel Ralph M. Mitchell’s study, The 101st Airborne Division’s Defense of Bastogne, reveals how a light infantry division, complemented by key attachments, stopped an armor-heavy German corps. Using original documents and reports, Colonel Mitchell traces the fight at Bastogne with emphasis on the organization, movement and, employment of the 101st Airborne Division. Although a variety of factors influenced the outcome at Bastogne, the flexibility of the 101st to reconfigure for sustained operations and to defeat strong opposition forces even when surrounded shows how properly augmented light infantry can fight and win.
