"Most managers," author Stephen C. Harper writes, "do not understand what is involved in transforming organizations." His book, The Ever-Evolving Enterprise: Guidelines for Creating Your Company's Future, is intended to remedy that, focusing on ten areas proactive business leaders must address as they guide their companies through everyday activities and into the future. The book stresses the need for firms to evolve to remain in sync with an ever-changing marketplace. It explores the multifaceted nature of transformational leadership and offers specific guidelines, ideas, and techniques leaders can institute to seize new opportunities and develop innovative products and services that offer sustainable competitive advantages. But it also invites executives to take a closer look at how they lead their firms, promoting a fresh psychological framework that will keep business leaders—and their companies—anticipatory, perceptive, agile, innovative, results-oriented, and able to execute so that their visions become realities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Ancient Skies brings together the methods of archaeology and the insights of modern astronomy to explore the science of astronomy as it was practiced in various cultures prior to the invention of the telescope. The book reviews an enormous and growing body of literature on the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean, the Far East, and the New World (particularly Mesoamerica), putting the ancient astronomical materials into their archaeological and cultural contexts. The authors begin with an overview of the field and proceed to essential aspects of naked-eye astronomy, followed by an examination of specific cultures. The book concludes by taking into account the purposes of ancient astronomy: astrology, navigation, calendar regulation, and (not least) the understanding of our place and role in the universe. Skies are recreated to display critical events as they would have appeared to ancient observers - events such as the supernova of 1054, the 'lion horoscope' or the 'Star of Bethlehem.' Exploring Ancient Skies provides a comprehensive overview of the relationships between astronomy and other areas of human investigation. It will be useful as a reference for scholars and students in both astronomy and archaeology, and will be of compelling interest to readers who seek a broad understanding of our collective intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bella Abzug’s promotion of women’s and gay rights, universal childcare, green energy, and more provoked not only fierce opposition from Republicans but a split within her own party. The story of this notorious, galvanizing force in the Democrats’ “New Politics” insurgency is a biography for our times. Before Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, or Hillary Clinton, there was New York’s Bella Abzug. With a fiery rhetorical style forged in the 1960s antiwar movement, Abzug vigorously promoted gender parity, economic justice, and the need to “bring Congress back to the people.” The 1970 congressional election season saw Abzug, in her trademark broad-brimmed hats, campaigning on the slogan “This Woman’s Place Is in the House—the House of Representatives.” Having won her seat, she advanced the feminist agenda in ways big and small, from gaining full access for congresswomen to the House swimming pool to cofounding the National Women’s Political Caucus to putting the title “Ms.” into the political lexicon. Beyond women’s rights, “Sister Bella” promoted gay rights, privacy rights, and human rights, and pushed legislation relating to urban, environmental, and foreign affairs. Her stint in Congress lasted just six years—it ended when she decided to seek the Democrats’ 1976 New York Senate nomination, a race she lost to Daniel Patrick Moynihan by less than 1 percent. Their primary contest, while gendered, was also an ideological struggle for the heart of the Democratic Party. Abzug’s protest politics had helped for a time to shift the center of politics to the left, but her progressive positions also fueled a backlash from conservatives who thought change was going too far. This deeply researched political biography highlights how, as 1960s radicalism moved protest into electoral politics, Abzug drew fire from establishment politicians across the political spectrum—but also inspired a generation of women.

Book excerpt: Step into the dark, seamy world of drug addiction, distrust, disloyalty, and greed and witness firsthand its destructive and tragic effects. Robert and Teresa Gilcriss, an upscale suburban couple, have all that life has to offer including two sons, Godfrey and Reginald, and are the envy of their peers. However, their lives tragically fall apart despite their good looks, material possessions, wealth, social status, and prominence. Robert, a successful attorney in a nationally known law firm who is diagnosed with acute depression, and Teresa, a socialite, terminate their marriage due to irreconcilable differences. Robert's downward spiral begins immediately after with the loss of his powerful position to a fellow attorney, Tony Gonzo, for whom he develops an intense hatred and is followed by his abrupt resignation. Robert and Teresa develop other relationships and eventually marry their newfound partners, whom they summarily divorce. Following an extraordinary string of events, Teresa marries Tony Gonzo, whom she divorces upon Robert's instigation, and graduates from law school. Years later, the Gilcrisses gradually bring their lives back on track by remarrying and settling into a successful law firm owned by Teresa. Robert suddenly and shockingly confesses to Teresa that he is a drug addict and has no love for her despite their remarriage. A physical scuffle ensues, Robert threatens her life, and the unthinkable occurs leaving Teresa no other choice but to murder him in self-defense. Teresa is defended by Tony Gonzo, but is found guilty and incarcerated for her crime. Tony Gonzo's mistress visits Teresa in prison and makes known his evil strategy to destroy her due to his psychopathic jealousies. Her case is retried, and she is eventually freed from prison, while Tony Gonzo is convicted for the death of his mistress, but is later released from prison in a second trial based upon new evidence. Teresa is suddenly found dead in her home. Tony Gonzo flees to France and is the main suspect. While living on the French Riviera, he believes she is sitting opposite him at breakfast. He is stunned by her beauty, and she suddenly disappears. He returns to his villa. He only wants to be with her and nothing more. He ends his life. This novel deals with the devastating consequences of rage, jealousy, hostility, and revenge. It graphically features an exciting series of complex emotions and unique twists that create a gripping, riveting, and suspenseful plot.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her remarkable first book, God Dwells With Us: Temple Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel, Mary L. Coloe, P.B.V.M., explored the profound insight of John's Gospel expressed in Jesus ' invitation to his disciples: Make your home in me, as I make mine in you (John 15:4). For the gospel's author and audience, the dwelling of God among humans was, above al, the Jerusalem Temple. The gospel traces how 'after the trauma of the destruction of the Temple 'the Johannine community came to expand and deepen its knowledge of God's dwelling among humans, finding it now in the person of Jesus and in the community of believers. Dwelling in the Household of God moves us from seeing God's dwelling place as the Temple to seeing God's dwelling place within the community of believers. The starting point now is an image in John 14:2: my Father's house, which is given its Old Testament meaning of my father's household. Our awareness thus moves, like that of the first Christians, from understanding My father's house as the Temple (John 2:16) to My Father's Household as a community of believers drawn into Jesus ' own divine filiation. Coloe invites us to re-read the gospel from the post-Easter perspective of those who have become brothers and sisters of Jesus and living Temples of God's presence. What emerges is nothing less than a profound mysticism of the mutual indwelling of God and believers. Mary Coloe, PBVM, DTh, holds a joint teaching position at the Australian Catholic University and St Paul's Seminary, Brisbane. Her publications include numerous articles and God Dwells With Us: Temple Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel (Liturgical Press, 2001).
