Book excerpt: Surveys the wide range of meters and techniques for calibrating and intercomparing the power of radio frequencies and microwaves in the range 1MHz to 200 GHz, a procedure necessary in many branches of science and technology. The reader is assumed to be at least a graduate level electrical engineer or physicist. Considers the fundamentals; calorimetry, which is the basis for most measurement; the various types of non-calorimeter power meters, including thermistor, thermoelectric, and diode types, and force-operated and other types; calibration and intercomparison methods; pulsed power measurements; related voltage and current measurement; and the international intercomparison of standards. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first isotope-shift measurement of bound-electron g-factors of highly charged ions and determines the most precise value of the electron mass in atomic mass units, which exceeds the value in the literature by a factor of 13. As the lightest fundamental massive particle, the electron is one of nature’s few central building blocks. A precise knowledge of its intrinsic properties, such as its mass, is mandatory for the most accurate tests in physics - the Quantum Electrodynamics tests that describe one of the four established fundamental interactions in the universe. The underlying measurement principle combines a high-precision measurement of the Larmor-to-cyclotron frequency ratio on a single hydrogen-like carbon ion studied in a Penning trap with very accurate calculations of the so-called bound-electron g-factor. For the isotope-shift measurement, the bound-electron g-factors of two lithium-like calcium isotopes have been measured with relative uncertainties of a few 10^{-10}, constituting an as yet unrivaled level of precision for lithium-like ions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the realities of unexplained natural phenomenon and provides explanations that push the boundaries of science. • Looks at animal telepathy and the ability of pigeons to home. • Proves the point that "big questions don't need big science". • Noted scientist Rupert Sheldrake is a former research fellow of the Royal Society. • New Edition with an Update on Results. How does your pet "know" when you are coming home? How do pigeons "home"? Can people really feel a "phantom" amputated arm? These questions and more form the basis of Sheldrake's look at the world of contemporary science as he puts some of the most cherished assumptions of established science to the test. What Sheldrake discovers is that certain scientific beliefs are so widely taken for granted that they are no longer regarded as theories but are seen as scientific common sense. In the true spirit of science, Sheldrake examines seven of these beliefs. Refusing to let intellectual dogmatism influence his search for the truth, Sheldrake presents simple experiments that allow the curious and the skeptical to join in his journey of discovery. His experiments look at how scientific research is often biased against unexpected patterns that emerge and how a researcher's expectations can influence the results. He also examines the taboo of taking pets seriously and explores the question of human extrasensory perception. Perhaps most important, he questions the notion that science must be expensive in order to achieve important results, showing that inexpensive methods can indeed shake the very foundations of science as we know it. In this compelling and intelligent book, Sheldrake offers no preconceived wisdom or easy answers--just an open invitation to explore the unknown, create new science, and perhaps, even change the world.

Book excerpt: This handbook on basic nuclear properties and particle decay modes is the result of new theoretical and experimental data on nuclear properties; its aim is to combine the newest developments from advanced research laboratories with background information on such topics as masses, deformations, and energy conversion factors. These findings, along with the most recently updated tables, make this a valuable reference for researchers, practitioners, and students of nuclear and particle physics who are interested in basic nuclear properties.

Book excerpt: The object of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was to pre sent a tutorial 'introduction both to the basic physics of recent spectacular advances achieved in the field of metrology and to the determination of fundamental physical constants. When humans began to qualify their description of natural phenomena, metrology, the science of measurement, developed along side geometry and mathematics. However, flam antiquity to modern times, the role of metrology was mostly restricted to the need of commercial, social or scientific transactions of local or at most national scope. Beginning with the Renaissance, and particularly in western Europe during the last century, metrology rapidly developed an international character as a result of growing needs for more accurate measurements and common standards in the emerging indus trial society. Although the concerns of metrology are deeply rooted to fundamental sciences, it was, until recently, perceived by much of the scientific community as mostly custodial in character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectroscopy of trapped ions or laser-cooled atoms offers the prospect of visible frequency standards to match or even exceed the accuracy of the caesium standard. The development of satellite methods for time comparisons has improved by more than an order of magnitude the accuracy with which national laboratories can routinely compare their clocks. Mechanical metrology has not been left behind. Driven by the need to improve manufacturing technology, major advances have taken place in computer control machining and mechanical measuring systems. These, and many other fascinating developments in the field of metrology are presented in this book.
