Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling memoir about identity, love and understanding. Now a major motion picture starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Lucas Hedges, directed by Joel Edgerton. "Every sentence of the story will stir your soul" (O Magazine). The son of a Baptist pastor and deeply embedded in church life in small town Arkansas, as a young man Garrard Conley was terrified and conflicted about his sexuality. When Garrard was a nineteen-year-old college student, he was outed to his parents, and was forced to make a life-changing decision: either agree to attend a church-supported conversion therapy program that promised to “cure” him of homosexuality; or risk losing family, friends, and the God he had prayed to every day of his life. Through an institutionalized Twelve-Step Program heavy on Bible study, he was supposed to emerge heterosexual, ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his faith in God for his brush with sin. Instead, even when faced with a harrowing and brutal journey, Garrard found the strength and understanding to break out in search of his true self and forgiveness. By confronting his buried past and the burden of a life lived in shadow, Garrard traces the complex relationships among family, faith, and community. At times heart-breaking, at times triumphant, this memoir is a testament to love that survives despite all odds.

Book excerpt: In the little town of Bethlehem, many years ago, a young boy lived with his mother. They lived in stables throughout the village, finding work with the innkeepers. Although they were poor and had to work hard to survive, the boy's mother had a strong faith in God. But the boy was afraid the coming Messiah she always spoke of would be unable to find them since they traveled from stable to stable. When the boy was just six years old, his mother became sick and passed away. The boy was very sad, and from that day on, he did not speak a word. For the next two years, he wandered the streets of Bethlehem, struggling to carry on. No one knew his name, so he became known simply as the Stable Boy. One evening, the Stable Boy overheard people talking about the Messiah his mother used to tell him about. He fell asleep dreaming of the King coming for him. Would the Messiah really come for The Stable Boy?

Excerpt: ... chapter V the infants' milk depots in great britain In the two preceding chapters we have traced in France and the United States during the last ten years of the nineteenth century the rise and development of special measures for the protection of infant life. In hoth countries, in the French Consultations de Nourrissons and Gouttes de Lait as in the American milk depots, these measures included the supply, either gratuitously or at reduced prices, of specially prepared infants' milk, which in most of the French institutions was supplied subject to the systematic medical supervision of the infants fed upon it. Some years elapsed before the work attracted the attention of public health workers in this country. It is doubtful if anything was known of Mr. Straus's depots until the publication in February, 1905, of my book Infantile Mortality and Infants' Milk Depots, in which an account of them is given. In the following summer Mr. Straus described his work in a paper he contributed to the discussion on infant mortality at the annual meeting of the British Medical Association at Leicester. The French methods, however, became known earlier, and, with modifications, were introduced into this country by the St. Helens Corporation on the advice of the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. F. Drew Harris. The attention of Dr. Drew Harris was first directed to the subject by a short leading article that appeared in the Journal of State Medicine of December, 1898, in which a description was given of Dr. Dufour's Goutte de Lait at Fecamp. He wrote to Dr. Dufour, who responded with the help he always readily gave to the many inquirers who applied to him for information and counsel. A small sub-committee of the corporation visited Fecamp, and on their...
