Book Synopsis The US-Thai Alliance and Asian International Relations by : Gregory Raymond
Download or read book The US-Thai Alliance and Asian International Relations written by Gregory Raymond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand, a long-standing defence partner of the United States and ASEAN’s second largest economy, occupies a geostrategically important position as a land bridge between China and maritime Southeast Asia. This book, based on extensive original research, explores the current state of US-Thai relations, paying particular attention to how the United States is perceived by a wide range of people in the Thai defence establishment and highlighting the importance of historical memory. The book outlines how the US-Thai relationship has been complicated and at times turbulent, discusses how Thailand is deeply embedded in multi-faceted relationships with many Asian states, not just China, and examines how far the United States is blind to the complexities of Asian international relations by focusing too much on China. The book concludes by assessing how US-Thai relations are likely to develop going forward. Additionally, the work contributes to alliance theory by showing how domestic politics shapes memory, which in turn affects perceptions of other states.

Download or read book Educational Research and Innovation Fostering Students' Creativity and Critical Thinking What it Means in School written by Vincent-Lancrin Stéphan and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity and critical thinking are key skills for complex, globalised and increasingly digitalised economies and societies. While teachers and education policy makers consider creativity and critical thinking as important learning goals, it is still unclear to many what it means to develop these skills in a school setting. To make it more visible and tangible to practitioners, the OECD worked with networks of schools and teachers in 11 countries to develop and trial a set of pedagogical resources that exemplify what it means to teach, learn and make progress in creativity and critical thinking in primary and secondary education.

Book Synopsis A Critical Study of Thailand's Higher Education Reforms by : Rattana Lao
Download or read book A Critical Study of Thailand's Higher Education Reforms written by Rattana Lao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical examination of contemporary higher education reforms in Thailand situated in the broader historical, socio-economic and political changes. Through a qualitative case study with three methods of inquiry, this book explores why different 'global education policies' such quasi-privatisation, internationalization, as quality assessment (QA) have resonated in Thailand higher education sector. Grounded in policy borrowing and lending, this book uses the politics, economics and culture of borrowing to analyse major reforms in Thailand for the past one hundred years. It is argued that historical legacy, policy contexts and belief systems of policy elites play pivotal roles in facilitating policy changes or the lack thereof. While historical analysis elucidates that the Thai state has always been an active borrower of western ideas, the perseverance of the 'Thai-ness' discourse has often been used to suggest its so-called independence and idiosyncrasy. This in-depth analysis of the Thai case aims to contribute to the critical studies in Asian education, comparative higher education, policy borrowing and lending and Thai studies. The Culture of Borrowing intensively studies the policy appropriation in the Thai education system by analysing: • Selective Borrowing and the Historical Development of Thai Higher Education • The Asian Economic Crisis as Window of Opportunity: Autonomous University • Internationalization of Teaching: Quantitative and Qualitative Challenges • The Emergence of Quality Policies and their Rationales • The Intended and Unintended Consequences of Quality Policies This book will appeal to researchers in Education, particularly to scholars studying educational policies within the context of tertiary education. It will also interest scholars specialising in Asian and South-east Asian Studies.

Download or read book Thailand written by Benjamin Zawacki and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand was a key ally of the United States after WWII, serving as a bulwark against communism in Southeast Asia and as a base for US troops during the Vietnam War. In return, the US provided it with millions of dollars in military and economic aid, and staunchly supported the country's various despotic regimes. And yet, the twenty-first century has witnessed a striking reversal in Thailand's foreign relations: China, once a sworn enemy, is becoming a valued ally to the military government. In this authoritative modern history, Benjamin Zawacki tells the story of Thailand's changing role in the world order. Featuring major interviews with high ranking sources in Thailand and the US, including deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand is a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the Thai elite and their dealings with the US and China.

Download or read book Thais in Los Angeles written by Chanchanit Martorell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Angeles is home to the largest Thai population outside of Thailand. With a relatively recent history of immigration to the United States dating to 1965, reports estimate that 80,000 Thais make their home in Southern California. In spite of its brief history in the United States, the Thai community in Los Angeles has already left its mark on the city. While the proliferation of Thai-owned businesses and shops has converted East Hollywood and some San Fernando Valley neighborhoods to destinations for cultural tourism, the Thai community in Los Angeles County reverberates still from global attention over the 1995 El Monte human trafficking case. The great popularity of Thai cuisine, textiles, and cultural festivals continues to preserve, enrich, and showcase one of Asias most distinctive cultures.
Book Synopsis The Prince and I - Miss Olive by : William A. Stricklin
Download or read book The Prince and I - Miss Olive written by William A. Stricklin and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prince and I: Miss Olive By: William A. Stricklin William A. Stricklin’s governess from 1938 to 1946, Miss Olive, was previously one of the servants for the daughter and two sons of her widowed friend Sangwan. The oldest son, at nine-years-old, was proclaimed King of Siam Ananda Mahidol Rama VIII in 1935. On June 9, 1946 King Ananda was found shot in the head four days before returning to Switzerland to finish his doctorate degree. His younger brother, Bhumi Adulyadej then ascended the throne as King of Siam Rama IX. As Miss Olive left Siam in 1937, she was not one of the three servants who were falsely executed for King Ananda’s murder. Miss Olive feared telling her side of the story until the passing of King Rama IX in 2016. Respectful of the terms of the “non-fiction contract,” where facts have been forever lost to history,Stricklin presents The Prince and I - Miss Olive as a historical novel. Readers will observe that the book is almost entirely non-fiction and, in any event, remains a fascinating unsolved murder mystery
