Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book excerpt: Siege Warfare and Military Organization in the Successor States is the first study to comprehensively treat an aspect of Byzantine, Western, early Islamic, Slavic and Steppe military history within the framework of common descent from Roman military organization to 800 AD. This not only encompassed the army proper, but also a greater complex of client management, private military retinues, labor obligations and civilian conscription in urban defense that were systematically developed by the Romans around 400, and survived to be adopted and adapted by all successors. The result was a common post-Roman military culture suitable for more restrained economic circumstances but still able to maintain, defend and attack city walls with skills rivalling those of their Roman forebears.

Book excerpt: American Military History, first published in 1956 as a one-volume textbook for ROTC courses and updated by countless historians through the years, intends to provide the United States Army with a fully comprehensive but brief account of its past in support of the military history education of young officers, NCOs, and cadets. Just as the history of an active organization inevitably expands, so too has this new edition under the oversight of general editor Richard W. Stewart. Revised to reflect the challenging period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational change in the Army during the post-Vietnam years through the Global War on Terrorism, the resulting two volumes are highly readable and graphically handsome with many colorful maps and illustrations of period artwork and military artifacts that enhance the narrative. Those with an interest in learning about the Army and its campaigns will enjoy having and reading these visually pleasing and instructive volumes. The second volume continues the saga, finding the Army facing complex challenges of creating, equipping, transporting, and supplying huge citizen armies across the globe during World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Then in the post-Vietnam years the Army transformed itself into a smaller all-volunteer professional force that has deployed for dozens of contingencies throughout the world, undertaking missions as diverse as humanitarian assistance/intervention, peace operations, nation building, and reconstruction. Now committed to prosecuting the Global War on Terrorism while fulfilling its essential homeland security responsibilities, the Army serves as an instrument of American power in the defense of freedom?a story that is still unfolding.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...of the War of the Rebellion, vol. 1, pp. xxxvii-xl. CHAPTER XVIII. MILITARY POLICY OF THE UNITED STATES DURING THE REBELLION (CONTINUED). MILITARY LEGISLATION IN 1861. The military system under which, in two campaigns of seven weeks each, Prussia humiliated Austria, in 1866, and subverted the French Empire in 1870, was the joint product of soldiers and statesmen, who began their laborers (in 1806) immediately after the disastrous battle of Jena. The military system under which we subdued the Rebellion was established by Congress in less than four weeks. The energy and haste with which the new Congress set to work to repair the neglect of its predecessors, may be inferred from the number and character of the bills and the joint resolution introduced in the Senate on the 6th of July, two days after the opening of the session, which bills were as follows: A bill to authorize the employment of volunteers to aid in enforcing the laws and protecting public property; a bill to increase the present military establishment of the United States; a bill providing for the better organization of the military establishment; a bill for the organization of a volunteer militia force, to be called the National Guardof the United States; also a joint resolution to ratify and confirm certain acts of the President for the suppression of insurrection and rebellion." In providing for the national defense, no false notions of economy--a political virtue paraded only in time of peace--were permitted to delay Congressional action. The first bill, in conformity with the recommendation of the President, proposed to authorize a force of 400,000 volunteers, and to appropriate $400,000,000, a sum greater than the total cost of the wars of the Revolution and 1812....

Contains a series of activities developed during the USAWC resident elective program over the previous four years that allows students or participants to identify, develop, plan, and implement change efforts in large, bureaucratic organizations. It eschews the simplistic approaches used in common business literature about change and presents tools derived from organizational development literature that embraces the complexity and paradoxes associated with real change. An activity book with the change practitioner in mind. Includes an appendix describing the Leading Change elective in the USAWC resident program and offers ways for adapting the course materials for use in educational, developmental, or practical settings.
