They are divided into two well-marked families: --The Schizomycetes, or Bacteriaceae, are extremely minute unicellular organisms, occurring in enormous quantities in all organic solutions where decay is going on, of which process they are the invariable accompaniment, if not tire cause. The number of distinct forms that have been described as belonging to the Schizomycetes is very large; but to what extent these are different conditions of development of the same organism is still in doubt. They may be conveniently arranged under the following heads, viz.: --1. Micrococcus. Globular and extremely minute. 2. Bacterium. Short straight rods. 3. Bacillus. Longer straight rods. 4. Vibrio. Curved rods. 5. Leptothrix. Straight filaments. 6. Spirillum. Curved filaments. 7. Zooglcea. Colonies of globular cells imbedded in mucilage. The rods and filaments are characterised by the ease with which they break up into Fig. 380.--Bacteria: separate segments as soon as they come Y "?& . into contact with the atmosphere, from TjUlcinus "uum, which circumstance the class has received d Kibrio Ru&ula, e the same, divid lts name. They multiply in this way, by ing: / spirillum simple division; but in the case of Bacillus, the formation of endogenous spores has also been observed. All the forms except Micrococcus and Zooglcea are endowed with rapid vibratory morions by means of cilia attached to the extremities, which can only be made out by the highest powers of the microscope, and with the assistance of staining reagents. The Schizomycetes usually grow in water, splitting up the nitrogenous compounds which are...

Book excerpt: Ecosystems and Human Well-Being is the first product of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a four-year international work program designed to meet the needs of decisionmakers for scientific information on the links between ecosystem change and human well-being. The book offers an overview of the project, describing the conceptual framework that is being used, defining its scope, and providing a baseline of understanding that all participants need to move forward. The Millennium Assessment focuses on how humans have altered ecosystems, and how changes in ecosystem services have affected human well-being, how ecosystem changes may affect people in future decades, and what types of responses can be adopted at local, national, or global scales to improve ecosystem management and thereby contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation. The program was launched by United National Secretary-General Kofi Annan in June 2001, and the primary assessment reports will be released by Island Press in 2005. Leading scientists from more than 100 nations are conducting the assessment, which can aid countries, regions, or companies by: providing a clear, scientific picture of the current sta

Book Synopsis Darwin-Inspired Learning by : Carolyn J. Boulter
Download or read book Darwin-Inspired Learning written by Carolyn J. Boulter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Darwin has been extensively analysed and written about as a scientist, Victorian, father and husband. However, this is the first book to present a carefully thought out pedagogical approach to learning that is centered on Darwin’s life and scientific practice. The ways in which Darwin developed his scientific ideas, and their far reaching effects, continue to challenge and provoke contemporary teachers and learners, inspiring them to consider both how scientists work and how individual humans ‘read nature’. Darwin-inspired learning, as proposed in this international collection of essays, is an enquiry-based pedagogy, that takes the professional practice of Charles Darwin as its source. Without seeking to idealise the man, Darwin-inspired learning places importance on: • active learning • hands-on enquiry • critical thinking • creativity • argumentation • interdisciplinarity. In an increasingly urbanised world, first-hand observations of living plants and animals are becoming rarer. Indeed, some commentators suggest that such encounters are under threat and children are living in a time of ‘nature-deficit’. Darwin-inspired learning, with its focus on close observation and hands-on enquiry, seeks to re-engage children and young people with the living world through critical and creative thinking modeled on Darwin’s life and science.
