To indicate where omissions may be made without interfering with continuity, two sizes of type have been used; the large type alone gives a coherent briefer course, to which may be added such portions of the smaller type as may seem best suited to individual needs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the basic physics of semiconductors, including the hierarchy of transport models, and connects the theory with the functioning of actual semiconductor devices. Details are worked out carefully and derived from the basic physical concepts, while keeping the internal coherence of the analysis and explaining the different levels of approximation. Coverage includes the main steps used in the fabrication process of integrated circuits: diffusion, thermal oxidation, epitaxy, and ion implantation. Examples are based on silicon due to its industrial importance. Several chapters are included that provide the reader with the quantum-mechanical concepts necessary for understanding the transport properties of crystals. The behavior of crystals incorporating a position-dependent impurity distribution is described, and the different hierarchical transport models for semiconductor devices are derived (from the Boltzmann transport equation to the hydrodynamic and drift-diffusion models). The transport models are then applied to a detailed description of the main semiconductor-device architectures (bipolar, MOS, CMOS), including a number of solid-state sensors. The final chapters are devoted to the measuring methods for semiconductor-device parameters, and to a brief illustration of the scaling rules and numerical methods applied to the design of semiconductor devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Physics In offering this work to my fellow teachers, a word of explana tion is due. The book was undertaken some years ago when the writer felt the want of a text-book adapted to the needs of students taking the general first year course in college. As the work has slowly progressed several text-books of very similar aim have appeared, and it must be admitted that the call is not so impera tive now as formerly; and yet it is hoped that the treatment here presented may meet some still existing demand and so justify its existence. What may be called the physical rather than the mathematical method has been preferred in giving definitions and explana tions, because it is believed that the ideas presented are more easily grasped and more tenaciously held when the mind forms for itself a sort of picture of the conditions, instead of merely associating them with the symbols of a formula. There are many minds that do not easily grasp mathematical reasoning even of a simple sort; and it is often the case also that a student who may be able to follow an algebraic deduction step by step has very little idea of the significance of the whole when he reaches the end. Algebra is not his native tongue and it takes considerable time and experience for him to learn to think in it. And while all will agree that for the more advanced study of physics, mathematics is quite indispensable, many will grant that in a general course, which is to furnish to most of those taking it all that they will ever know of physics as a science, the ideas and reasonings should be presented as directly as possible and in the most simple and familiar terms. This then has been the central aim in the preparation of this book; to give the student clear and distinct conceptions Of the various ideas and phenomena of physics, and to aid him in think ing through the relations between them, to the end that he may see something of the underlying unity of the subject; and to carry out this aim in such a manner that students may not be repelled by any unnecessary prominence of symbolic methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems presents a modern and reasonably complete account of the classical mechanics of particles, systems of particles, and rigid bodies for physics students at the advanced undergraduate level. The book aims to present a modern treatment of classical mechanical systems in such a way that the transition to the quantum theory of physics can be made with the least possible difficulty; to acquaint the student with new mathematical techniques and provide sufficient practice in solving problems; and to impart to the student some degree of sophistication in handling both the formalism of the theory and the operational technique of problem solving. Vector methods are developed in the first two chapters and are used throughout the book. Other chapters cover the fundamentals of Newtonian mechanics, the special theory of relativity, gravitational attraction and potentials, oscillatory motion, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, central-force motion, two-particle collisions, and the wave equation.

Book excerpt: This textbook is specifically designed to meet the needs of students taking the two-semester calculus-based introductory physics courses now favored in many countries around the world. Accordingly, it is more concise than the extremely long standard textbooks, but offers the same modern approach and format. All core topics in classical physics are covered using straightforward language, including mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and optics. The necessary mathematics is developed along the way, rigorously and clearly. The book also features a wealth of solved examples, which will deepen readers’ conceptual comprehension and hone their problem-solving skills. In addition, some 430 problems and 400 multiple-choice questions serve to review key concepts and assess readers’ progress. The material in the book has been successfully employed in classroom teaching for the past decade, during which time it has been successively refined. Given its scope, format and approach, the book is the ideal choice for all science, engineering, and medical students embarking on an introductory physics course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking text and reference book on twenty-first-century classical physics and its applications This first-year graduate-level text and reference book covers the fundamental concepts and twenty-first-century applications of six major areas of classical physics that every masters- or PhD-level physicist should be exposed to, but often isn't: statistical physics, optics (waves of all sorts), elastodynamics, fluid mechanics, plasma physics, and special and general relativity and cosmology. Growing out of a full-year course that the eminent researchers Kip Thorne and Roger Blandford taught at Caltech for almost three decades, this book is designed to broaden the training of physicists. Its six main topical sections are also designed so they can be used in separate courses, and the book provides an invaluable reference for researchers. Presents all the major fields of classical physics except three prerequisites: classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and elementary thermodynamics Elucidates the interconnections between diverse fields and explains their shared concepts and tools Focuses on fundamental concepts and modern, real-world applications Takes applications from fundamental, experimental, and applied physics; astrophysics and cosmology; geophysics, oceanography, and meteorology; biophysics and chemical physics; engineering and optical science and technology; and information science and technology Emphasizes the quantum roots of classical physics and how to use quantum techniques to elucidate classical concepts or simplify classical calculations Features hundreds of color figures, some five hundred exercises, extensive cross-references, and a detailed index An online illustration package is available

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Physics, Designed for Use as a Textbook of General Physics When a man exerts his muscles in moving a body or in pushing or pulling a body which he cannot move, he is con scious of the exertion of force. In many cases, as when he bends a spring or sustains a weight, he interprets his sensa tion by saying, that the body against which he acts exerts a force in the opposite direction to the one which he is exerting and of equal magnitude. He further believes that the body, when in the same position or condition, is still exerting a force, even though he does not directly perceive the counter acting force. He thus feels willing to use bodies in certain conditions or positions as the means by which forces may be exerted. When a body is sustained in the air by the hand, the force exerted by the hand, as is shown by universal experience, is directed vertically upwards. The force which the body is assumed to exert in the opposite direction or vertically down wards, is called its weight. Universal experience has shown that the weight of a body depends on its size and on the material of which it is composed. If different bodies com posed of the same material and of equal volume are tested by A the hand, or.in any other way, it is found that their weights are equal. Two of these bodies will have the same weight as a body of the same material and of a volume double that of either one of them. By suitable. Combinations of equal weights, any one of which is selected as a unit, a scale of forces can be constructed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Text-Book of Physics This book is primarily intended as a text-book for elementary classes of Physics. It aims at presenting, in brief space, those portions of Theoretical Physics which are most essential as a foundation for subsequent advances, while at the same time most fitted for exercising the learner in logical and consecutive thought. It does not give minute directions for manipulation; but, avoiding details as much as possible, presents a connected outline of the main points of theory. In order to place science upon an equal footing with the more established studies of ancient languages and mathematics, as a means of practically training the bulk of our youth to vigorous thought, it seems necessary that science text-books should be constructed upon such lines as these. It is not practicable to make the bulk of the boys in our public schools expert scientific manipulators; but it is practicable to ground them well in the main lines of scientific theory. The aim must be not so much to teach them many facts, as to teach them rightly to connect a few great facts together. Science must be taught them from a liberal, not from a technical stand-point.
