These have been duly embodied in the five successive German editions that have appeared in the meantime. The work has accordingly been so altered and enlarged that in preparing a third English edition we have had entirely to rewrite the text, and to recast the bibliographical and other supplementary portions. The number of pathological papers and monographs to which reference might fitly be made is now so great that only the more recent and important can be dealt with. But the student of historical tastes will find ample references to the earlier literature in the previous English editions; and by omitting them in this much valuable space has been gained. The second volume, containing the sections on the alimentary tract with the liver and pancreas, the respiratory and genitourinary systems, the eye, and the ear, is already in the press and will shortly be published. We hope to follow it with a new version of the part on General Pathological Anatomy, prepared with the author's sanction and assistance from the latest German edition. Storage deposition, and hence pathological disease, occurs preferentially in renal glomerular and tubular epithelial cells, myocardial cells, heart valve fibrocytes, neurons of dorsal root ganglia, and in endothelial smooth muscle cells of blood vessels. Thus, Fabry disease is a multi-system disorder, albeit with considerable phenotypic heterogeneity in onset and in severity; however, it is progressive, exhibits extensive morbidity, and is life-threatening. Within the past two decades, there has been a radical change in the natural course Fabry disease by virtue of the availability of specific enzyme replacement therapy. Moreover, there has been a concerted effort to better understand the underlying pathology and equally to identify patients prior to the onset of irreversible end-organ damage. It is to be hoped that the future for patients with Fabry disease can be viewed with greater, albeit guarded, optimism. This state-of-the-art textbook attempts to bridge the span of pre-clinical studies, clinical finding, and management options in a readable but comprehensive manner for the medical practitioner as well as the interested non-medical reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is usually considered to be a compen satory adjustment of heart muscle to an inreased work load. LVH develops in the course of valvular or congenital heart disease, or when part of the myocardium is damaged by long-standing ischemia or infarction. In the hypertrophied heart the muscle fibers increase in size, not in number. The fibers are found to contain a larger number of myofibrils and the cell organelles are larger. From epidemiologic studies it is known that even mild LVH is associated with myocardial ischemia, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. Most cases of LVH show focal degenerative tissue changes including cellular atrophy, myofibrillar disorganization, interstitial fibrosis, and loss of intracellular connections. Myocardial dysfunction develops and, unlike the functional adaptive changes found in pure hypertrophy, is not reversible by surgical treatment of the valvular heart disease or medical correction of hypertension. Interstitial fibrosis, intracellular changes of musc Ie cells, and loss of contract ile tissue lead to poor mechanical function and undoubtedly increase the risk of ischemia, arrhythmias, or sudden death, a well-recognized problem in patients with a variety of heart diseases. Even When successfully treated, the patients may remain at risk if the compensatory hypertrophy is not fully reversed. Epidemiologic studies conducted in the Framingham population in the early 1950' s demonstrated LVH according to electrocardiographic criteria in 1. 5% of the population; 2% of the population had LVH according to chest X-ray criteria.

Planet by planet, House by House, this volume contains all the suggestions of the Author on the exorcism of symbols - a useful practice also in the case you do relocate your Solar and/or Lunar Returns: for example if you have willingly left some dissonant position in your map of Aimed SR or of Aimed LR, and you wish to lower the threshold of risk a little more. The volume also explains the philosophical and psychological roots justifying the practice of the exorcism of symbols.
