Book excerpt: Arizona Rattlesnake Tales takes the reader back in time to experience the unimaginable hardships cowboys and pioneers faced while living amongst the dreaded “rattler,” in a time when antivenom was nonexistent and a rattlesnake bite was often a death sentence. The book includes vintage clippings—unedited reports from 1866–1923 newspapers that paint a clear picture of the extreme adversity and tragedy early settlers dealt with. The tales are scary, exciting, humorous, and oftentimes sad, and they all help to illuminate this fascinating time and place in U.S. history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2020 National Outdoor Book Award, Nature and the Environment Snakes inspire extreme reactions. Love or hate these limbless reptiles, almost everyone is fascinated by them. Although snakes are widespread and frequently encountered, they may be more misunderstood than any other group of animals. From giant rattlesnakes to mating dances, there are dozens of myths and misconceptions about snakes. In Secrets of Snakes: The Science beyond the Myths, wildlife biologist David Steen tackles the most frequently asked questions and clears up prevailing myths. In a conversational style with a bit of humor, Steen presents the relevant biology and natural history of snakes, making the latest scientific research accessible to a general audience. When addressing myths about snakes, he explains how researchers use the scientific method to explain which parts of the myth are biologically plausible and which are not. Steen also takes a close look at conventional wisdom and common advice about snakes. For example, people are told they can distinguish coralsnakes from non-venomous mimics by remembering the rhyme, “red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, kill a fellow,” but this tip is only relevant to coralsnakes and two mimics living in the southeastern United States, and it does not always work with other species or in other countries. Enhanced by more than 100 stunning color photographs and three original drawings, Secrets of Snakes: The Science beyond the Myths encourages readers to learn about the snakes around them and introduces them to how scientists use the scientific method and critical thinking to learn about the natural world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covered by Wide World of Sports, National Public Radio, and National Geographic, Texas rattlesnake roundups like those in Sweetwater, Texas, draw both fascinated tourists and irate protesters. Begun as an organized form of predator control in the 1920s, for many years rattlesnake roundups have been promoted as community events and civic fundraisers. The western diamond-backed rattlesnake is the main attraction, with pits full of thousands of writhing rattlesnakes serving as the featured spectacle. Often taking advantage of the animals' denning behavior to capture large numbers at a time, hunters deliver live snakes to commercial dealers who are contracted by event organizers to supply the animals as a source of entertainment: from snake handling and snake races to snake sacking, snake skinning, snake milking, and snake education activities. Rattlesnake products of various types are also sold and consumed at the events. In this close-up look at rattlesnake roundups in Texas, Clark E. Adams and John K. Thomas present perhaps the first full description of this social and environmental phenomenon, tracking its popularity, its participants, its opponents, its impact on the communities where it occurs, and, as much as is possible, its effects on the rattlesnake itself. In recent years, the commercial trade in Texas animals has emerged as a serious and controversial issue, and the number of roundups has declined sharply. Texas Rattlesnake Roundups promises to provide a balanced starting point for all those interested in knowing more about this curious custom.

Book excerpt: Snakes are very enigmatic creatures. They are feared, hated, and maligned. Yet probably less than fifteen percent of the world's approximately 3,000 snake species, are venomous. Further breaking these percentages down, in North America there are approximately 150 species of snakes. Of these, only some 20 species are venomous. These venomous snakes can be broken down into four groups: Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Water Moccasin/Cottonmouths, and Coral Snakes. Texas has all four of these groups of venomous snakes. Hernán Moreno Hinojosa is a retired Law Enforcement Officer and Author. Hernán became interested in collecting folk stories when he was only 16 and still living in Hebbronville, Texas. Hernán would frequently accompany his father to La Florida Ranch, which was leased for cattle production at the time. While out on the ranch, he became greatly interested in snakes and began writing stores about them. Some were true and some were folklore. Hernán retired from the Metro Police in 2008. He currently divides his time between their Houston home and their South Texas ranch with his wife, Herlinda Garza. They recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. They are blessed with four children; three girls, one son, and one grandson. He is still collecting ghost stories and writing. His newest books, Lechuza and The Deceiver are available in all bookstores.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed naturalist offers an in-depth profile of the timber rattlesnake, from its unique biological adaptations to its role in American history. The ominous rattle of the timber rattlesnake is one of the most famous—and terrifying—sounds in nature. Today, they are found in thirty-one states and many major cities. Yet most Americans have never seen a timber rattler, and only know them from movies or our frightened imaginations. Ted Levin aims to change that with America’s Snake. This portrait of the timber rattler explores its significance in American frontier history, and sheds light on the heroic efforts to protect the species against habitat loss, climate change, and the human tendency to kill what we fear. Taking us from labs where the secrets of the snake’s evolutionary adaptations are being unlocked to far-flung habitats that are protected by dedicated herpetologists, Levin paints a picture of a fascinating creature: peaceable, social, long-lived, and, despite our phobias, not inclined to bite. The timber rattler emerges here as an emblem of America, but also of the struggles involved in protecting the natural world. A wonderful mix of natural history, travel writing, and exemplary journalism, America’s Snake is loaded with remarkable characters—none more so than the snake itself: frightening, fascinating, and unforgettable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinker, writer, diplomat, feminist Rosario Castellanos was emerging as one of Mexico's major literary figures before her untimely death in 1974. This sampler of her work brings together her major poems, short fiction, essays, and a three-act play, The Eternal Feminine. Translated with fidelity to language and cultural nuance, many of these works appear here in English for the first time, allowing English-speaking readers to see the depth and range of Castellanos' work. In her introductory essay, "Reading Rosario Castellanos: Contexts, Voices, and Signs," Maureen Ahern presents the first comprehensive study of Castellanos' work as a sign or signifying system. This approach through contemporary semiotic theory unites literary criticism and translation as an integral semiotic process. Ahern reveals how Castellanos integrated women's images, bodies, voices, and texts to feminize her discourse and create a plurality of new signs/messages about women in Mexico. Describing this process in The Eternal Feminine, Castellanos observes, "...it's not good enough to imitate the models proposed for us that are answers to circumstances other than our own. It isn't even enough to discover who we are. We have to invent ourselves."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respected raconteur Joe Hayes is built for tall tales—he’s got the world’s longest legs! And Joe—who travels all over the United States telling stories to kids—says that The Gum-Chewing Rattler is the perfect tall tale for kids because it combines so many familiar experiences—chewing lots of bubblegum, getting in trouble in school, driving your mom crazy—with the wild, impossible claim that a certain rattlesnake chewed gum and blew a bubble with it. Couple that with kids’ natural fascination with poisonous snakes, and The Gum-Chewing Rattler turns out to be one of Joe’s most requested stories. Joe’s been telling this wild story for years, since before 1980, when he took those long legs of his out on the road. But now, that old gum-chewer is here for the first time in a picture book with full-color illustrations by Antonio Castro L. Here’s how Joe’s story goes: When Joe was a boy, he chewed lots of bubblegum, his mom got so mad because the gum in his shirt pocket made a terrible mess in the wash! But this wad of bubblegum just happened to save Joe from a rattlesnake’s fangs! Really!! Don’t worry—his mother didn’t believe the story either.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book written with a genuine love and concern for these often maligned animals-and with a knowledge of their role in the ecosystem. There are eleven chapters with sixty-three photographs, more than half of these in color. Written about a time not so long ago when collecting and releasing these reptiles was not as restricted as it is now. The stories are of capturing snakes in the wild. From forests to swamps from backyard to desert. Sometimes with danger sometimes not. But always with excitement. There is a section on the identification of venomous snakes of the United States including precautions and advice on first aid. A chapter on rattlesnake round-ups and their effects on snake populations is discussed. Diagrams explain how a rattle works, how the venom delivery system operates and the efficacy of a striking coil. Fallacies and folklore are examined and set straight. The stories are real. The snakes are exciting. The excitement is real. E.C.O. 915 Seymour, Lansing, MI 48906, (517)487-5595, Fax (517) 371-2709, email; ecoorders@hotmail, website; www.ecouniverse.com.
