Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas Beekeeping, Vol. 24 An old and good rule is that, where success is desired, it is well to take the advice of the successful. It can be applied in this instance with certainty of excellent results. Mr. Scholl is Consulting Apicultural Expert of the Texas Depart ment of Agriculture, and, as such, will answer any question, addressed to this Department, that readers may wish further light on, after reading the bulletin. There is not a farmer in Texas to whose interest it would not be to have an apiary on his place, and comparatively few, who, on account of location, could not have one at small initial expense and maintain it in paying condition without consuming time needed for other farm operations. To have for the home table an abundance of choice honey - the most delicious and wholesome sweet - is an item that would, alone, compensate for money and labor invested. Added to this, under proper management, there would be sure to be a surplus of honey and considerable beeswax that could be sold at good prices, and, under some circumstances, there could be made every year a barrel or two of superior vinegar that there would be no difficulty in find ing purchasers for. Furthermore, an apiary situated in the right place, would result in larger crop yields than if there were invested in fertilizers many times the money and the value of the labor put into it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee-Keeper, Vol. 6: January, 1896 For myself, I can honestly say that after keeping bees under many varied conditions, sometimes wasting the whole season and practically wasting stocks in carrying out some, perhaps, useless fad or crank of my own, I am perfectly satisfied that there is no business, hobby, pastime, or pursuit that gives so much profit for the out lay, to say nothing of the pleasure and the health-giving side of the matter, as a few well-managed hives of bees in careful and thoughtful hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Bee Journal, Vol. 9: July, 1873 How much interest was felt in relation to the cause which occasioned the disastrous losses of our bees in the winter of 1871 - 2, and yet but few, if any of us, were prepared for the fact that, the winter which has just closed, (that of '72 and would far surpass the previous one in point of fatality, even, in many instances, devastating entire apiaries; and I greatly regret to state that, in a radius of fifty miles from the point at which I write, that from one-half to two-thirds of our colonies have perished. I feared last fall that, in the absence of proper management, this loss would occur, and so I predicted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the A.& M. College Apiary: Together With Practical Suggestions in Modern Methods of Bee Keeping as Applied to Texas Conditions Dear Sir: Herewith I beg to submit a report upon the work accomplished with the Apiary at the College the past six months, since the establishment of the same this season. The year thus far has been a most unfavorable one for surplus honey production and the colonies have been brought in and established and bred up to a strong working force under the greatest difficulties. Mr. Wilmon Newell was selected as Assistant Entomologist in February and was given the immediate charge of the Apiary and its care and development preparatory to experimental work. Much preliminary work has been done under my direction and the basis for much valuable work in the future prepared. Some important suggestions have already developed from the work upon honey plants and the studies made concerning them the past season. Then, too, it has been found that there is a pressing demand for some kind of ready reference and guide for the farmers, truck growers, and fruit growers, who have a few colonies, but who are not familiar with up-to-date methods. For all of these reasons I have asked Mr. Newell to prepare a complete report covering many of the serious difficulties encountered. This will be of great value to the rural bee keepers of the State. His report has been prepared with great care, and I take pleasure in submitting the same herewith and recommending it for publication as a portion of my annual report. Dear Sir: In compliance with your instructions, I beg to submit herewith a report upon the Experimental Apiary, located at the Agricultural and Mechanical College, which was created by act of the Twenty-seventh Legislature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Bee Culture, Vol. 30: A Journal Devoted to Bees, Honey, and Home Interests; January 1, 1902 Foul-brood inspection is practiced to quite an extent in Central California. Every county that is noted for bee-keeping has its inspector. Mr. Bowen is inspector for Fres no Co.; and when he has a real hard case of foul brood on hand he calls in the prom imcnt bee-men of the vicinity and allows them to inspect with him; and, having their indorsement, he goes ahead to destroy. While Mr. Bowen is independent enough to take the most severe measures, these wit nesses he calls in give him such a backing that there can be no cause for complaint. Hayhurst, at the late meeting of the Western B. K. Association at Independence, Mo. The reason these precautions are needed is well stated by him (see gleanings, p. If the bees are disturbed before the queen begins to lay she will become frightened, running and piping, and the bees will chase and kill her. He says, Before she begins to lay. I had one balled this summer after she had been laying, because of the bees being disturbed by my search to see if she was all right. I have never failed with the plan I have given. J. T. Goddard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hive Bee: A Manual of Beekeeping for Hawaii The hive bee is a familiar example of an insect under domestication. The history of its domestication is lost in antiquity; for the art of bee culture has been known since the earliest times. In the wild state bees range the woods, nesting in hollow trees, in crevices in rocks or in any place that will afford them protection, often in the most inaccessible places. Searching for these nests in order to plunder their stores of honey constitutes a favorite pastime in the countryside. This method of procuring the bees products, however, is wasteful and uncertain. The bee has small place in human economy until its cultivation as a domestic animal insures a lively and continued interest. Under domestication the bee has received considerable attention. Its cultivation among the historical peoples dwelling on the shores of the Mediterranean has led to the recognition of well-marked races, from different characteristics of size, color, behavior, etc., and some improvement in quality of the different races has been made through the application of well known principles of breeding. As a domestic animal also it has been carried with the stream of human migration to practically all parts of the earth. The German or black race of bees was the one commonly propagated by the early beekeepers and received a wide distribution; but more recently the superiority of the Italian or golden race has become recognized and it is now largely replacing the German bee. The early spread of the black bee is deplored by many beekeepers on account of the trouble it gives when they attempt to maintain pure breeds of the golden races. The principal characteristics of the Italian bee are its high color, great energy and peculiar gentleness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bee-Keeper's Handy Book: Or Twenty-Two Years' Experience, in Queen-Rearing, Containing the Only Scientific and Practical Method of Rearing Queen Bees, and the Latest and Best Methods for the General Management of the Apiary It may not be out of place for me to give tho reasons that induced me to assume the position of author and give to the bee-keeping fraternity a work of this kind. 1 had been engaged in queen-rearing but a few years when I became convinced that the system then in vogue was faulty and that a much better method was needed and might be devised. With this object in view I at once instituted a series of experiments which, I am happy to say, have been crowned with success, even beyond my most sanguine expectations, and I am now able to present to my fellow bee-keepers a system which is both scientific and practical. After so many years of arduous toil and study in perfecting this method, I felt that it was no more than just that I be reasonably remunerated for my labors and for the knowledge that I had gleaned from my long experience in queen-rearing; consequently I decided to publish my method in book-form, trusting to the hearty response of the bee-keeping fraternity for remuneration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in the South: A Handbook on Seasons, Methods and Honey Flora of the Fifteen Southern States An impression gained is that beekeeping operations differ but little in the South from those in vogue elsewhere, except mainly in the time of their application. We have little criticism of methods in vogue in the South, except the lack of winter protection of any sort in too much of this region. Box hives are too prevalent in many areas of the South, but so they are in the North. An impression of southern beekeepers is their eagerness to learn modern methods, where they happen to be unknown, and to put them into practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location.
