Book Synopsis Continuous Monitoring and Partial Water Softening for Cooling Tower Water Treatment by :
Download or read book Continuous Monitoring and Partial Water Softening for Cooling Tower Water Treatment written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooling towers are an integral component of many refrigeration systems, providing comfort or process cooling across a broad range of applications. They are the point in the system where heat is dissipated to the atmosphere through the evaporative cooling process. Cooling towers are commonly found in industrial applications and are also often applied to water-cooled chilled water plants in medium to large commercial buildings. Cooling towers used in medium to large commercial buildings are the focus of this paper. While there are many vendors of AWT systems, this project assesses the effectiveness of one technology provided by Aqualogix. This system is a chilled water plant monitoring and control system optimizing system performance by reducing the blowdown occurrences used to remove mineral build-up. The technology consists of two components - continuous programmable logic control (PLC) monitoring and side-stream filtration with partial water softening. PLC monitoring calculates cycles of concentration and determines the optimum amount of blowdown water required to satisfy all water chemistry limits. Side-stream filtration removes suspended matter and improves biocide efficacy while precisely dispensing softened water to achieve optimal makeup water hardness. Unlike other AWT systems evaluated by GSA to date, this system does not replace the legacy treatment system but is used in addition to chemical water treatment. The vendor claims their technology will reduce water consumption, water discharge, and maintenance costs. This project assesses the effectiveness of this technology at lowering GSA's operating costs and reducing cooling tower blowdown while maintaining proper water treatment. The GPG program selected the Lloyd D. George Courthouse, located in Las Vegas, NV, as the test bed for evaluating the Continuous Monitoring and Side Stream Filtration for Cooling Towers technology provide by Aqualogix. The AWT system consists of a PLC controller and side stream filtration system that are mounted on a skid is approximately 91 inches tall, 40 inches long and 40 inches wide.

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of Three Water Treatment Programs for Cooling Tower Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the cost and effectiveness of three cooling tower water treatment programs. The programs studied were an acid program developed at WPAFB, a commercial solubilizer program manufactured by Lombardi, Inc, and a crystal modifier program developed by Dias, Inc. The experiment ran for 60 days at which time cost and effectiveness data were collected. Cost comparison was evaluated on the basis of tower performance in MBtu. The costs considered in this experiment were water costs, sewer costs, and chemical costs. All costs were recorded and totaled, then divided by the tower's performance. The effectiveness of each treatment method was evaluated on its ability to control scale, inhibit corrosion, and prevent microorganism growth.

Book Synopsis Management of Legionella in Water Systems by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Management of Legionella in Water Systems written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.
