Book Synopsis Assembling Early Christianity by : Cavan W. Concannon
Download or read book Assembling Early Christianity written by Cavan W. Concannon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Cavan W. Concannon explores the growth and development of Christianity in the second century. He focuses on Dionysios of Corinth, an early Christian bishop who worked to build a network of churches along trade routes in the eastern Mediterranean. Using archaeological evidence, and analysing Dionysios' fragmentary letter collection, Concannon shows how various networks and collectives assembled together, and how various Christianities emerged and coexisted as a result of tenuous and shifting networks. Dionysios' story also overlaps with key early Christian debates, notably issues of celibacy, marriage, re-admission of sinners, Roman persecution, and the economic and political interdependence of churches, which are also explored in this study. Concannon's volume thus offers new insights into a fluid, emergent Christianity at a pivotal moment of its evolution.
Book Synopsis Apuleius' Florida by : Benjamin Todd Lee
Download or read book Apuleius' Florida written by Benjamin Todd Lee and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Florida, an anthology of 23 orations that Apuleius of Madauros delivered primarily in Carthage during the 160’s A.D., offers a rich store of evidence about epideictic rhetoric, Middle Platonism, and the civic and intellectual life of the North African provincial metropolis. In addition to locating the work in its historical and cultural context, this commentary investigates Apuleius’ remarkable language and style. Full attention is given to the rich and complex intertextual relationship of the Florida to earlier Greek and Roman literature, as well as to the work’s extensive links to Middle Platonism, the Second Sophistic, and the rest of the Apuleian corpus, particularly his philosophical works.
Book Synopsis The Greek World of Apuleius by : Gerald Sandy
Download or read book The Greek World of Apuleius written by Gerald Sandy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three chapters of this book elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage in these chapters with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by the major Latin writer of the second half of the second century.
Book Synopsis Roman Patrons of Greek Cities by : Claude Eilers
Download or read book Roman Patrons of Greek Cities written by Claude Eilers and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-09-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patronage has long been an important topic of interest to ancient historians. It remains unclear what patronage entailed, however, and how it worked. Is it a universal phenomenon embracing all, or most, relationships between unequals? Or is it an especially Roman practice? In previous discussions of patronage, one crucial body of evidence has been under-exploited: inscriptions from the Greek East that borrow the Latin term 'patron' and use it to honour their Roman officials. The fact that the Greeks borrow the term patron suggests that there was something uniquely Roman about the patron-client relationship. Moreover, this epigraphic evidence implies that patronage was not only a part of Rome's history, but had a history of its own. The rise and fall of city patrons in the Greek East is linked to the fundamental changes that took place during the fall of the Republic and the transition to the Principate. Senatorial patrons appear in the Greek inscriptions of the Roman province of Asia towards the end of the second century BC and are widely attested in the region and elsewhere for the following century. In the early principate, however, they become less common and soon more or less disappear. Eilers's discursive treatment of the origins, nature, and decline of this type of patronage, and its place in Roman practice as a whole, is supplemented by a reference catalogue of Roman patrons of Greek communities.

Book Synopsis The Latin Poems of Manilius Cabacius Rallus of Sparta. On Longing, Fortune, and Displacement by : Han Lamers
Download or read book The Latin Poems of Manilius Cabacius Rallus of Sparta. On Longing, Fortune, and Displacement written by Han Lamers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin Poems of Manilius Cabacius Rallus of Sparta presents the poetic oeuvre of a forgotten poet of Renaissance Rome. A Greek by birth, Manilius Cabacius Rallus (c. 1447–c. 1523) spent most of his life far from his motherland, unable to return. Through his poems, composed in a range of metres and genres, Rallus engaged with some major events and personalities of his time, including Angelo Poliziano, Ianus Lascaris, and Pope Leo X. His poems also reflect on timeless human experiences such as helplessness in the face of fortune and nostalgia for what is lost. Han Lamers edited the Latin text of Rallus’ poems (most of them printed for the last time in 1520) and added annotations and an English prose translation.
