Book excerpt: Results from three wind tunnel tests in the National Transonic Facility of a model of an advanced-technology, subsonic-transport wing-body configuration have been analyzed to assess the test-to-test repeatability of several aerodynamic parameters. The scatter, as measured by the prediction interval, in the longitudinal force and moment coefficients increases as the Mach number increases. Residual errors with and without the ESP tubes installed suggest a bias leading to lower drag with the tubes installed. Residual errors as well as average values of the longitudinal force and moment coefficients show that there are small bias errors between the different tests.Mineck, Raymond E. and Pendergraft, Odis C., Jr.Langley Research CenterSUBSONIC SPEED; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; TRANSONIC WIND TUNNELS; BODY-WING CONFIGURATIONS; AERODYNAMIC COEFFICIENTS; LIFT; PITCHING MOMENTS; DRAG; FORCE DISTRIBUTION; MOMENT DISTRIBUTION; MACH NUMBER; HIGH REYNOLDS NUMBER; DATA REDUCTION

This book was released on 1992 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind tunnel investigation was conducted to investigate the unsteady aerodynamic aspects of transonic Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCO) on fighter type aircraft wings. This investigation is a cooperative effort of General Dynamics (Fort Worth) and the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) of the Netherlands which is funded by the U.S. Air Force and the Dutch Ministry of Defense. Two tests were planned and the first test, conducted during September 1991, was concerned with a wing body configuration with wing stores and was restricted to incidences below 10 deg. The second test, planned for March 1992, will be for a simple wing-strake geometry and will cover incidences up to at least 30 deg. This paper presents results from the first test with the objective to obtain unsteady pressures and forces necessary for identifying the aerodynamic nature of transonic LCO which is currently encountered on many fighter configurations. The wing panel was oscillated in pitch at amplitudes and frequencies typical of LCO for flow conditions in which significant shock-induced separation is encountered. Unsteady pressure data were obtained for the wing panel in terms of both harmonic components and time-histories to highlight the nonlinearities. Unsteady forces and moments measured on the wing panel as well as on each wing store were also obtained to indicate the level of contribution of each element to the overall unsteady wing loads for pitching motions.

This book was released on 1952 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a transonic research program the sensitivity of downwash at the tail plane to fairly systematic changes in wing plan form and thickness has been evaluated over a Mach number range of approximately 0.6 to 1.1, utilizing the transonic-bump technique. This paper presents a summary of information obtained from 11 transonic-bump investigations of wing and wing-fuselage configurations and compares the experimental results with theoretical estimations made for subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers.
Book Synopsis Effects of Overhang Balance on the Hinge-moment and Effectiveness Characteristics of an Unswept Trailing-edge Control on a 60 Degree Delta Wing at Transonic and Supersonic Speeds by : Lawrence D. Guy
Download or read book Effects of Overhang Balance on the Hinge-moment and Effectiveness Characteristics of an Unswept Trailing-edge Control on a 60 Degree Delta Wing at Transonic and Supersonic Speeds written by Lawrence D. Guy and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been made of two unswept, partial-span, flap-type controls (differing only in hinge-line location) mounted on a 60 degree delta wing. One control was unbalanced and the other has a 100-percent overhang balance. Control hinge moments as well as aerodynamic characteristics of the complete wing-body combination were obtained for control deflections from 0 to 40 degrees over an angle-of-attack range of plus or minus 12 degrees at Mach numbers from 0.75 to 1.96. Reynolds numbers varied between 2,200,000 and 2,200,000. Expressions derived from linear theory for the hinge-moment coefficient due to angle of attack for unswept partial-span controls (which extend neither to the wing tip nor to the wing center line) on triangular wings having subsonic leading edges are given in an appendix.
