Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a modern, practical approach to the understanding and measurement procedures relevant to the fracture of brittle materials This book examines the testing and analysis of the fracture of brittle materials. Expanding on the measurement and analysis methodology contained in the first edition, it covers the relevant measurements (toughness and strength), material types, fracture mechanics, measurement techniques, reliability and lifetime predictions, microstructural considerations, and material/test selection processes appropriate for the analysis of the fracture behavior of brittle materials. The Fracture of Brittle Materials: Testing and Analysis, Second Edition summarizes the concepts behind the selection of a test procedure for fracture toughness and strength, and goes into detail on how the statistics of fracture can be used to assure reliability. It explains the importance of the role of microstructure in these determinations and emphasizes the use of fractographic analysis as an important tool in understanding why a part failed. The new edition includes a significant quantity of material related to the fracture of biomaterials, and features two new chapters—one on thermal shock, the other on the modeling of the fracture process. It also expands on a discussion of how to treat the statistics of fracture strength data to ensure reliability. Provides practical analysis of fracture toughness and strength Introduces the engineering and materials student to the basic concepts necessary for analyzing brittle fracture Contains new statistical analysis procedures to allow for the prediction of the safe design of brittle components Contains real-world examples to assist the reader in applying the concepts to their own research, material development, and quality-control needs The Fracture of Brittle Materials: Testing and Analysis, Second Edition is an important resource for all students, technicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers involved in the study, analysis, creation, or testing of ceramics.

Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture toughness is an important material parameter that can be applied in the prediction of a cracked structure's stability under dynamic loads. Large single cleavage semicircle compression specimens were used to evaluate rock dynamic fracture toughness by a drop weight impact test system. Crack propagation gauges, which consist of a group of fine wires, were glued along a crack propagation path to measure crack propagation speed and propagation time. The finite difference code Autodyn (ANSYS, Canonsburg, PA) was used to simulate the crack propagation path and to analyze the crack propagation mechanism. A group of gauge points were set up along the propagation path, and the stresses at these points were calculated and analyzed. The dynamic stress intensity factors were calculated by numerical models using the finite element code ABAQUS (Dassault Systmes, Vlizy-Villacoublay, France). Finally, the dynamic fracture toughness, including initiation toughness and propagation toughness, was determined according to crack propagation speed and propagation time. The results show that crack propagation speed varies during dynamic propagation under impact loads, and the propagation toughness is inversely proportional to the crack propagation speed. In addition, the phenomena of cracks temporarily arresting could be observed during crack dynamic propagations.

Book excerpt: In the engineering practice it is of importance to know the effect of loading rate on the material behaviour, e.g., on the fracture mechanics properties. One of the most widely used testing techniques for determining these properties is the instrumented impact test. Depending on the material behaviour under a given loading condition, different fracture mechanics parameters should be determined. Most of the evaluation procedures of these parameters are still not standardised for higher loading rates. So the aim of the present work was to investigate the applicability of different methods for determining dynamic fracture toughness properties. Instrumented impact experiments combining with magnetic emission measurement have been performed on pre-cracked Charpy-V specimens of E420 C and QStE 690 TM high strength steels. Critical values of stress intensity factor (KId, KJi) related to the initiation of the fracture at different temperatures have been determined Using different methods depending on the type of the fracture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last thirty years there is a growing acknowledgement that prevention of catastrophic failures necessitates engagement of a large pool of expertise. Herein it is not excessive to seek advice from disciplines like materials science, structural engineering, mathematics, physics, reliability engineering and even economics. Today’s engineering goals, independently of size; do not have the luxury of being outsideaglobalperspective.Survivaloftheintegratedmarketsand?nancialsystems require a web of safe transportation, energy production and product manufacturing. It is perhaps the ?rst decade in engineering history that multidisciplinary - proaching is not just an idea that needs to materialise but has matured beyond infancy. We can witness such transition by examining engineering job descriptions and postgraduate curricula. The undertaking of organising a conference to re?ect the above was not easy and de?nitely, not something that was brought to life without a lot of work and c- st mitment. The 1 Conference of Engineering Against Fracture from its conceptual day until completion was designed in a way of underlying the need of bringing all the key players on a common ground that once properly cultivated can ?ourish. To achieve that the conference themes were numerous and despite their, in principle notional differences, it was apparent that the attendees established such common ground through argumentation. The reader can see this from the variety of research areas re?ected by the works and keynote lecturers presented.
