Book excerpt: By the author of Philip K. Dick: Remembering Firebright, this personal memoir tells the life story of a survivor of abuse who also experienced strange and bizarre events that seem to coalesce around a secret government-sponsored experiment in mind control. "The man told me that they were dropping me from the program because I was neither physically nor mentally fit for long-term space travel. I begged him to give me a chance, promising that I would work very hard, but he only looked sad while telling me that it was impossible. He added that I was remembering too much, and that I might tell the secrets to people who shouldn't know about the program. So now I'm telling the secrets." This second edition has an added Epilogue and cover art by Nick Buchanan.

Book excerpt: Blade Runner 2049 shows us a world devastated by war and threatened by a power mad creator of artificial humans. This sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner suffered from a misguided marketing campaign and contradictions in the plot lines, but it succeeds in showing us the stark beauty of scarred landscapes and deteriorating city streets. Humans live alongside replicants, and they buy virtual friends to combat loneliness. Behind the slick facade of brightly lit animated billboards, many people live in poverty in the future city of Los Angeles, which reflects the state of things today. The story began with a novel by an obscure science fiction author who lived in poverty for most of his life. His dark vision of the future became widely known after Ridley Scott's Blade Runner was released in 1982, but sadly Philip K. Dick died before the film was shown in theatres. His genius is finally recognized, but it is too late for him. Tessa B. Dick began her writing career as a journalist, writing for magazines and newspapers. Her husband Philip K. Dick encouraged her to write fiction after he read her first short story. She worked with him on his later novels, including VALIS and A Scanner Darkly. Since then, Tessa has produced a variety of poems and stories, as well as a murder mystery and several memoirs. Two of her memoirs have been published in Italian translations, and her surrealist novel The Darkening of the Light is currently in the process of translation. Some of her shorter works can be found in the online magazine PKD Otaku, as well as the journal Emanations.

Dick was a writer who drew upon his own life to address the nature of drug abuse, paranoia, schizophrenia and transcendental experiences of all kinds. More than 10 major Hollywood movies are based on his work including Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly, Total Recall, Minority Report and The Adjustment Bureau. Born in 1929 just before the Great Crash, Dick's twin sister died when she was a month old and his parents were divorced by the time he was three. In his teens, he began to show the first signs of mental instability, but by then he was already producing fiction writing of a visionary nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interviews with the genius behind The Man in the High Castle and countless other science fiction classics. In the field of science fiction, Philip K. Dick is unparalleled. His novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? became the classic film Blade Runner. His short story “The Minority Report” was adapted for the screen by Steven Spielberg. The Man in the High Castle has become a hit series on Amazon, and those titles represent only a small fraction of his work. In November 1982, six months before the author’s untimely death, journalist Gwen Lee recorded the first of several in-depth discussions with Philip K. Dick that continued over the course of the next three months. This transcription is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the field of science fiction. “These transcripts bring fresh insights—notably, into the imaginative biotech plot line of the unwritten The Owl in Daylight . . . Dick also discusses music, writing, philosophers and his 1974–1975 mystical visions, when the revelation of his son’s undiagnosed birth defect—‘down to anatomical details’—saved the child’s life . . . Fans will rejoice.” —Publishers Weekly

While looking at conspiracy theories that range from the moon landing and JFK’s assassination to the Oklahoma City bombing and Freemasonry, this reconstruction reveals newly discovered connections between wide swaths of events. Linking Dracula to George W. Bush, UFOs to strawberry ice cream, and Jesus Christ to robots from outer space, this is truly an all-original discussion of popular conspiracy theories.

This book offers something for everybody, including a tale about vegetarian dragons to be enjoyed by children of all ages! Book excerpt: An in-depth look at Christopher Nolan, considered to be the most profound, commercially successful director at work today, written with his full cooperation. A rare, revelatory portrait, "as close as you're ever going to get to the Escher drawing that is Christopher Nolan's remarkable brain" (Sam Mendes). In chapters structured by themes and motifs ("Time"; "Chaos"; "Dreams"), Shone offers an unprecedented intimate view of the director. Shone explores Nolan's thoughts on his influences, his vision, his enigmatic childhood past--and his movies, from plots and emotion to identity and perception, including his latest blockbuster, the action-thriller/spy-fi Tenet ("Big, brashly beautiful, grandiosely enjoyable"--Variety). Filled with the director's never-before-seen photographs, storyboards, and scene sketches, here is Nolan on the evolution of his pictures, and the writers, artists, directors, and thinkers who have inspired and informed his films. "Fabulous: intelligent, illuminating, rigorous, and highly readable. The very model of what a filmmaking study should be. Essential reading for anyone who cares about Nolan or about film for that matter."--Neal Gabler, author of An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood and Walt Disney, The Biography
