Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of grassland ecosystems based on publications by Chinese scholars. It offers an up-to-date review of the recent advances in grassland research in China, discusses the climatic and physical conditions governing the grasslands, describes their types and distribution, and introduces a new classification scheme for grassland ecosystems. Further, it details the plant, animal, and microbial compositions of each grassland ecosystem type, examining the above and below ground relationships between phytomass, vegetation succession, and past/current management practices with a particular focus on the steppes in China. It also includes references that are only available in the Chinese language. This scientifically rigorous book offers insights into knowledge gaps for the scientific community and identifies pressing issues facing practitioners of grassland ecology and management. It can be used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, agriculture, and other relevant fields, and is also a valuable reference resource for researchers studying drylands in China or around the globe.

Book excerpt: Earthworms are often recognised as key organisms in soil ecosystems. In Chapter One, the authors propose endozoochory (seed dispersal through ingestion) as a missing mechanism of Oligochaeta dispersal and put forward the fusion-orthogonalisation model for the diversification and speciation of the Oligochaeta populations. Chapter Two discusses the biodiversity of earthworms in Madhya Pradesh, a central part of India. Earthworm diversity in some parts of India is still poorly explored, but findings suggest that the Madhya Pradesh region is rich in biodiversity of earthworms. In Chapter Three, a predation pressure is presented as an important variable which can be viewed as another type of pressure on the earthworm population, such as pollution, environmental stress or land management, causing additional or extrinsic mortality to earthworm population. Chapter Four covers the key role played by earthworms as ecosystem engineers through their bioturbation activities involving soil mixing, their influence on the decomposition and mineralisation of litter by breaking down organic matter, and their influence on the gas and water exchange or nutrient transfer in the soil. Chapter Five reviews recent research regarding the assessment of various pollutants on earthworms with emphasis on the possible improvement of the investigation in soil pollution monitoring using these organisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving zero hunger and food security is a top priority in the United Nations Development Goals (UNDGs). In an era characterized by high population growth and increasing pressure on agricultural systems, efficiency in the use of natural resources has become central to sustainable agricultural practices. Fundamentally speaking, eco-efficiency is about maximizing agricultural outputs, in terms of quantity and quality, using less land, water, nutrients, energy, labor, or capital. The concept of eco-efficiency involves both the ecological and economic aspects of sustainable agriculture. It is therefore essential to understand the interaction of ecosystem constituents within the extensive agricultural landscape, as well as farmers’ economic needs. This book examines the latest eco-efficient practices used in agro-systems. Drawing upon research and examples from around the world, it offers an up-to-date overview, together with insights into directly applicable approaches for poly-cropping systems and landscape-scale management to improve the stability of agricultural production systems, helping achieve food security. The book will be of interest to educators, researchers, climate change scientists, capacity builders and policymakers alike. It can also be used as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate courses on agriculture, forestry, soil science, and the environmental sciences.
